Your Vote Can Make Me "The Great Blendini" !

Rita's Italian Ice is having a contest to find a magician worthy of the title "The Great Blendini," to promote their new frozen creation, the Blendini.

If you'd be so kind as to take a second to vote for my video, I'd very much appreciate it.  Even better, send the link to a few friends! Help make me the Great Blendini!

Go to http://ritasice.feedroom.com/ and find "Make a Blendini ... Magically!" [currently it's the default video, so it plays automatically]

To the right of the video, click on the fifth star under "My Rating," proclaiming that I am the Great Blendini.  The stars will turn blue ... it's subtle, but it means that your vote went through.

Right now there are only 28 ENTRIES, which for a big contest like this is quite small. If you and a few friends all cast your vote, it'll make a huge difference!

Contest ends JULY 31st ... vote early and often!  Thanks in advance,

~ Peter

Damascus Library Shows A Blast

I had the pleasure of performing two shows for the Damascus Library this afternoon, each with a crowd of over 200, and very excited to be there and watching.  Since we're Damascus church-goers, I've an adopted sense of home when it comes to Damascus, and it felt good to be performing at the library where many of my first magic books were checked out.

A very special thanks to all of you who came out to see us, and if you missed the show, come see us for free on the 30th at Middletown's Independence Day celebration!  'Til then,

~ Peter

Shazam @ Church - The Saint Paul 50th Anniversary Picnic

Matt and I just got back from our church, and we're exhausted.  But it was a fun evening!

Matt brought his awesome grill, Bad Angus, and helped cook burgers and hot dogs for the hungry peoples.  We also brought our lighting rig, so as the evening entertainments continued everyone could see.

We had a timeslot near the end of the night, and I was grateful that so many people (especially families with small kids) stuck around for our magic show.  Matt and I performed our Burned Sock Routine (with some new apparatus), as well as the Invisible Deck Revealed, always an audience favorite.

Magic on the water

Just got back from a really fun wedding party on the Odyssey cruise out of the D.C. Marina.  It was the first time I've been a magician on the water!  The crowd was fun, and enjoyed the magic.  There were about 200 people, but I was there for four hours, so everyone got a good dose of magic.

I took a dinner break to enjoy some tortellini at a fancy table all by myself.  As the Odyssey looped out and back through D.C., we saw the Kennedy Center, Watergate Hotel, Washington and Lincoln Memorials, and plenty of low bridges that only the Odyssey could scoot under.

My feet hurt, I'm quite tired, but it was a memorable show :-)

The Model

So I am pretty much nuts about this model: a hot, sexy model that's all mine.

I'm talking of course about a scale model … but it's not like a plane or car or something like that. It's a model of a box for a magic illusion that I cooked up. I've never seen anything like it before, so I'm hoping audiences will appreciate that originality.

Appearing Car Box Prototype

The proposed effect involves this box, which sports a removable lid and walls that unfold. The front and back are made of clear plastic, the sides and lid are solid. The lid is placed on, and all four walls are folded up and attach to the lid. Not only is it assembled before the audience, but it remains in full view, and the audience can see right through it. The final version will also include a turntable in the base and four little spotlights, one in each corner.

In the full-size version (about the size of a suitcase), the box will be assembled, and an audience volunteer will choose a style and color of a vehicle, as well as find seven random letters and numbers for the license plate. We'll then fill the box up with some smoke, and yank the lid off (which in turn causes the sides to fall open).

There rotating on the turntable, gleaming in the spotlights, will be a model of their chosen car, accurate down to the license plates.

How cool will that be? :-) Please note that this is still in the development stages, so the routine and working is subject to change before you see it in one of my shows. But I've been kicking around this idea for about a year, and the model has made me even more excited to proceed.

Thoughts? Feel free to share 'em, and I'll let you know when this effect makes it into the show!

Magic for Moms of Multiples

Last night I did some strolling magic for the Montgomery County Parents of Multiples meeting, which was carnival-themed.  But out of about 300 attendees, I only say two guys, so I'll stick to the less politically-correct, but more alliteration-filled, Moms of Multiples.

These ladies were a blast.  Escaped moms out to have a good time are always up for a magic trick, and their reactions were most excellent.  It was a unique event, and I very much enjoyed being a part of it.

Although I did have several of them tell me I was cute … and there's nothing like a mom of twins or triplets saying you're adorable *nervous laugh*

Being Original Pays Off

Last night, Matt and I attended the Columbia chapter of the Society of American Magicians' monthly meeting. The theme of the evening was originality, and they held their annual "Lindsay Crawford Originality Contest."

Much to my surprise, I now have a big trophy, and the prestige of having senior magicians vote my illusion the most original. Matt and I performed our "Crystal Clear Prediction" routine, where a shape, number, and word are chosen by three volunteers, and I correctly predict all three on a pre-recorded CD. The CD had been previously displayed in a clear locked box throughout the show, hence the title.

It's very rewarding when magicians like our effects as well :-) For the full story, check out this link: http://www.shazammagic.com/news/news_04_16_07.pdf

Even though it's not a sexy leg lamp, it's still a major award.

I Can't Really Do Magic ...

I can't really do magic.  But if I could, what would I do with it?  Sure, I'd probably solve world problems, fight crime, etc.  But I certainly wouldn't have people choose cards or pull a rabbits out of top hats.  Let's assume that I truly had magical powers, but wished to showcase them in a magic show to entertain and amaze people.  What magic would I perform?

This is a good question, and one that David Copperfield has asked himself for his most recent tour, An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion.  Copperfield entertains with illusions that tap into what people would do if they had magic powers: guessing lottery numbers, making the car of their dreams appear, being transported to a tropical island, or simply disappearing for a while.  While I have no intention of copying Copperfield's theme, I do think that inspiration can be found in this thought process.

So I ask you, dear reader of the third paragraph, what would amaze or entertain you on stage?  Do you enjoy scratching your head over a good mystery?  Or seeing something elegantly choreographed and skillfully performed?  We magicians make many performance decisions in a vacuum, and being surrounded by other magicians often makes this worse.  What new tricks would you like to see me performing onstage?  Please comment all you like … your thoughts are valued!
