KGOU Weekend Blues Interview: Last weekend, guitarist, Rob Vollmar and I spent a lovely afternoon interviewing with the dude . . . the man . . . the host of "The Weekend Blues", "Hardluck" Jim Johnson of KGOU 105.7. (Now I understand how he got the name "Hardluck" ). Jim has been very supportive of our single, "One More For The Road". Not only does he play the best of the Blues, old and new, he also includes Oklahoma artists and other independent blues bands in his playlists. That sure wins him a place in my heart!
We chatted about making "Girl On The Wire" and about Rob's graphic novel, BLUESMAN (scroll down to find out more). The segment is supposed to air this Saturday, March 25 during "The Weekend Blues" program from 1:00 - 5:00. If you live out of the listening area, you can listen live on-line at www.kgou.org. We also recorded a couple acoustic tunes live in the studio, so be the first to hear an acoustic version of "A Wiser Woman", before we release it on our new CD this Fall.
Top 5 Reasons The Shelly Phelps Band is like The Blues Brothers
5 . . . We're on a mission from God (Not exactly, but he would totally dig our music)
4 . . . One of us just got out of prison (No, it's been months since any of us were in prison)
3 . . . We've played behind chicken wire (Why won't you let us leave the past in the past)
2 . . . Our guitar player is married to Aretha Franklin (OK, you know this isn't true but I just wanted the chance to point out the absurdity of Jake and Elwood not inviting Mrs. Murphy to go on the road after her stellar performance of "Think" in the Soulfood Cafe. This has bugged me for years and I'm happy to finally get it off my chest)
1 . . . We're getting the band back together! (Yep, this one is true. Bassist, Warren Roach and Drummer, Erol Coulter have re-joined the band! Give us a couple months and we'll be ready to groove!)
Next month . . . . Top 5 Reasons The Shelly Phelps Band is like Spinal Tap!
(Oh please, don't let Erol spontaneously combust or choke on his own vomit)
Have You Checked Out Our New Website? No?? GO THERE NOW! Wait, that was a little forceful. How about this? Will you please, if it's not too much trouble, kindly check out our new website? You can getFree Downloads or leave us a love note or your grocery list or somethin' on ourGuestbook.
More Stuff About BLUESMAN! In last month's newsletter, I told you about BLUESMAN, a graphic novel written by our multi-talented guitarist, Rob Vollmar. I'm pleased to report the book is getting rave reviews! Notably, he and artist, Pablo G. Callejo received an excellent write-up in the March 17th issue of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY. Learn more about BLUESMAN at www.bluesmanproject.com or more about Rob at www.myspace.com/robvollmar!
It Runs In The Family! It's my newsletter, so I can brag if I wanna. I've got some super talented nieces and nephews (about 16 of them I think). Anyway, two of them have bands of their own. My niece Mandy Qualls (You may have seen her jump on stage with me to belt out "Me and Bobby McGee") is in the mega-cool band "The Sour Grapes", best described as "Neo-Retro Punk/Country". Check them out out www.myspace.com/thesourgrapes. My nephew Jason Qualls (he used to have long hair, but cut it off because no one noticed) sings and plays guitar in the Christian Rock Band "Downpour 40". Go to www.myspace.com/downpourforty to hear their new song "Rain". The song will kick you in the backside and make you like it.

Welcome! Tell Us Who/What We Sound Like!!

Welcome to my Blog!
There’s lots of blogs out there, so thanks for taking the time to check out mine!! I’ll be posting weekly so please check back often or better yet, subscribe . Rob Vollmar (Lead Guitar) and I are putting together a new band lineup and gearing up to record a new CD, but more on that next week! (That was my attempt at a teaser.) For now, I’m looking forward to sharing our music and making new friends so please don’t be shy!
Thanks for listening.
Peace ya’ll, Shel
Tell Us Who or What We Sound Like (You might win a CD!)
We have many influences – so many in fact, that I have trouble hearing who we sound like. I’ve been told my voice sounds like everyone from Karen Carpenter to Tina Turner and everything from “chocolate” to “sex”. Rob’s guitar solos are typically described as “badass” and he’s been known to summon the spirit of Frank Zappa. The last song on our “Girl On The Wire” CD (Let It Go) sounds as if Brian May was in the studio that day. (He wasn’t.) That’s all good and fine, but we are in serious need of your help! We would be especially grateful if you would listen to our music and then post a comment about who/what we sound like. If you do this for us, great riches and good fortune will come to you. OK, maybe not – but if you are especially creative and we end up using your “description’ on our website or promotional materials, we will send you a free CD!!
BLUESMAN (A graphic novel by Rob Vollmar and Pablo G. Callejo)
Not only is my guitar player Rob Vollmar a ridiculously talented musician, he is also an award-nominated graphic novel writer.Rob created BLUESMAN along with artist, Pablo Callejo. They first teamed up to create CASTAWAYS, theiracclaimed, Eisner Award-nominated first graphic novel. Check out Rob's MySpace Siteor go directly to the Bluesman Website.
ROCKRGRL Music Conference
I’m still pumped from the Rockrgrl Music Conference I attended in Seattle last month. Patty Smith and Johnette Napolitano were the keynote speakers and were just so damned cool and full of passion. I felt a connection to Patty as she spoke of her deep regret that HBO cancelled Carnivale. (I know, I know. They so owe us.) As if that weren’t enough, I got to hear Bonnie Raitt and Ann Wilson (Heart) talk shop. This was nothing short of a religious experience.
