INTRODUCTION to The Karma Sutra
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

THE KARMA SUTRA: Sex, Love & Relationship Zen
Available in bookstores APRIL 2008

INTRODUCTION

My second favorite activity is dating--the first is losing consciousness while bungee jumping and smashing face first into a craggy cliff.

Don’t get me wrong. I love to be in love. The only problem is that I’m a nut magnet. Really, I am. For years, every weirdo, commitment-phobe, and "perfect storm" of male stupidity, found me absolutely irresistible or just had to have me.

Then one day, chilling thoughts of spending another evening listening to some narcissist drone on about his latest act of brilliance, or trying to remove every trace of cat hair from my house to keep the allergic boyfriend from going into anaphylactic shock again, made me swear off all alarming, disordered, neurotic, and overall frightening men (that is, pretty much anyone with a Buzz Lightyear action figure collection, or a restraining order).

I plunged into monk mode, withdrew from social activities and refused to answer my e-mails. I meditated, soul-searched and waited for some kind of an epiphany. I was terrified of becoming the prophet of doom -- or worse, my grandmother after her third cocktail. So, I withdrew, iced my bruised ego, and hid the fact that I was as needy as my mother before starting hormone therapy .

And then, like the proverbial butterfly emerging from it’s chrysalis, I came out of my shell. My plan was to assemble the "triumvirate of estrogen" -- a certain black silk dress that gave me outstanding cleavage; long, shining locks; and mega-mascaraed lashes that rivaled those of Cleopatra.

Meanwhile, as I mentally mapped out the logistics of my Herculean comeback, it happened... He happened. Turbo Testosterone Tommy. The urban Adonis of the laundry room. We talked for almost an hour while I, oh-so-eagerly, answered his every question about detergent measurements.

After the hour was up, he confirmed the strong attraction between us by asking me out to dinner in an hour.

Suddenly, a sobering thought snapped me out of la-la land; Here was the nicest, hottest, most "normal" guy I had met in eons, and I had less than 60 minutes to pull off the kind of deferred personal maintenance feat attempted only by extreme makeovers or the truly insane. As if that weren’t enough, I hadn’t shaved my legs for so long that donning a pair of shorts could have easily caused any neighbor to call animal control.

In addition, the angry "undergrounder" plowing it’s way up through my left eyebrow was threatening to make it’s presence known by nightfall. I had not gotten around to buying that sexy black dress, either (that was on the list after leg defuzzing), or the mega-lash mascara. The best thing I had to wear belonged at the Cairo museum in an airtight vault.

And then, something else hit me. Here I was right back on the same old external relationship track, twisting myself into a pretzel and starving, shaving, plucking, and stuffing myself into the latest packaging -- all in hopes of making that connection with Mr. Right. Trying to survive in the singles world had made me as crazy as a pigeon lady-- without the birds!

I’m a fairly low maintenance woman, and my needs are minimal. But Id rather be strapped to a mast and forced to watch a weekend marathon of male erectile enhancement commercials than invest myself in another dead-end relationship. So, I got calm, centered myself, and decided to get back to basics... my basics. Karma.

We’ll get back to Tommy later. But first, let me explain what I mean by Karma and how it influences our relationships.

" A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. "
- Chinese proverb

A harmonious year for those born into the Fire element. Fire element people work out issues in 2008 making "resolution" the name of the year.

Earth element people enjoy a stable year and benefit from earned or expected (as opposed to unexpected) income, resources and wealth

Metal element persons enjoy a nurturing year of resources, care and happiness, as Earth is the parent element to Metal

Water is contained and restricted during this Earth year. Water element souls should keep on a steady, predictable path for now and wait for a better climate to begin new projects

In 2008 we all will need more: Reassurance, Encouragement

We will want less: Solitude, Being alone

Turn-on's: Covert activities

Turn-off's: Exposure

Lucky year for: New Beginnings, Fresh Starts

Unlucky for: Endings, Separations

The hidden elemental stem in the Rat year branch is Water and this fluidity shows up in this years style; Communicative, emotional and deeply complex.

Potentials and new beginnings will be the astral signature of 2008

As an embryo is hidden within it's mothers womb and a seed lies within it's pod, the essence of this Rat year will be "concealment." 2008's socially adept Rat year brings us charisma, intelligence and the ability to charm the pants off of just about anybody â€" literally. Romantically, 2008's repertory will be as eclectic and varied as this first sign of the Zodiac. High-strung, curious, and ever alert to sexual opportunity, during Rat years we will all feel the need to make an emotional connection with our love partner. It is after sunset that the Rat year comes alive with numerous acquaintances, lively discussion, and intensely romantic interludes. We will all value companionship and love more than anything else this year. Enjoy the concealed and stealth midnight hours (between 11pm and 1am) ruled by the Rat of romantic secrets and delicious debauchery. People fall in love easily during Rat years and we will all be prone to some memorable infatuations. In the last Earth Rat year (60 years ago) Alfred Kinsey's Sexual Behavior in the Human Male stuned the country with revelations about infidelity, homosexuality and other issues.

Rat years bring new beginings. Positively, in the previous Rat year of 1948, the Jews of Palestine declared independence and the State of Israel was born on May 14, 1948. Negatively, another major beginning occurred that year on May 26, 1948 when the government of South Africa embraced Apartheid bitterly dividing the country. Financially, socially and globally, for better or for worse, 2008 is pregnant with potential.

2008 will also be an intellectual one, as the Rat is the curious professor of the zodiac. Expect a renewed passion for knowledge, and interest in the sciences in 2008. Travel and a hunger for new experiences, will also becon. The 200-inch telescope at Mount Palomar began operation in the previous Earth Rat year of 1948 and the "Big bang" theory of the universe's origin was first postulated. In aztec, New Mexico Three radar units tracked a falling UFO and a military search party was dispatched from Camp Hale in Colorado. The search team finds a crashed 30-foot disc, recovers remains which is stored in Hangar 18 at Wright-Patterson AFB.

Words and language will become ever more important and poets, musicians and writers can easily produce their best work to date under the influence of the talented Rat. Exchanging and communicating are the priorities of a Rat year. A hyperactive and restless year of potential nervous disorders and neurosis of every type. A good year to explore relaxation methods such as meditation more thoroughly. You may find yourself more sensitive to illness, environmental insults and allergies this year as well, so be sure to get that flu shot and eat your vegetables!

A like minded year when restless Rats refuse to settle into a routine. Your Yang + essence takes the lead in romance during 2008. Cozy up to a home loving Ox, an outspoken Dragon or a fun-loving Monkey. This Rat year exacerbates your high-strung disposition, and while this shouldn't affect your job productivity, it will definitely fray your nerves. Promotions are possible and money becomes more plentiful. Make certain that all business is kept on the up and up. Always plan for the future, as this will allow you to better enjoy the moment. Best months: Jan, April, Aug, Dec. Challenging: June, July, Sept.

The OxOx

1997 Feb 7 to Jan 27, 1998: Fire Ox 2009 Jan 26 to Feb 13, 2010: Earth Ox

Due to the soulmate connection, Rat years are particularly good ones for Oxen. Your Yinâ€" essence balances well with the +Yang Rat year energies. A family and security conscious year for you. Good financial luck, but be cautious not to spend too much. Many social events and opportunities for romance this year! Settle down with a clever Rat, a seductive Snake or brassy Rooster. Plant a garden, knit a new sweater or carve a custom set of furniture. Best months: Feb, Mar, May, Dec. Challenging: June, July, Oct.

1998 Jan 28 to Feb 15, 1999: Earth Tiger 2010 Feb 14 to Feb 2, 2011: Metal Tiger

Rat years are busy ones for Tiger natives and can be particularly exhausting, draining and depleting. 2008 is the "Steed" or action catalyst for you and extra caution is called for in any type of travel, change, or reevaluation this year. Expect delays, slow down and think all actions through carefully. Attending happy or joyful events such as weddings, births, reunions and celebrations. Although there may be difficulties, these will all be happily resolved by October. Be careful of romantic temptations which could affect your emotional and physical health. Best months: Oct, Nov, Dec. Challenging: March, May, June.

.." alt="The Rabbit" />Rabbit

..>
1915 Feb 14 to Feb 2, 1916: Wood Rabbit 1903 Jan 29 to Feb 15, 1904: Water Rabbit
1927 Feb 2 to Jan 22, 1928: Fire Rabbit 1939 Feb 19 to Feb 7, 1940: Earth Rabbit
1951 Feb 6 to Jan 26, 1952: Metal Rabbit 1963 Jan 25 to Feb 12, 1964: Water Rabbit
1975 Feb 11 to Jan 30, 1976: Wood Rabbit 1987 Jan 29 to Feb 16, 1988: Fire Rabbit
1999 Feb 16 to Feb 4, 2000: Earth Rabbit 2011 Feb 3 to Jan 22, 2012: Metal Rabbit

The Rat and the Rabbit are in a "Peach blossom" or "Plum" relationship, responsible for romantic, even torrid love affairs. Rat years are filled with both passion and even danger for the Rabbit. Be cautious of commingling funds with or borrowing money from third parties. The Rat year may demand a commitment, which the detached and cautious Rabbit will resist. However, with 2008's energies, even reticent Rabbits could feel the urge to settle down. Don't be surprised if you become more of a committed finance rather than an artful dodger in 2008. Best months: May, August, Oct, Nov. Challenging: April, July, Sept, Dec.

The DragonDragon

..> ..>
1904 Feb 16 to Feb 3, 1905: Wood Dragon 1916 Feb 3 to Jan 22, 1917: Fire Dragon
1928 Jan 23 to Feb 9, 1929: Earth Dragon 1940 Feb 8 to Jan 26, 1941: Metal Dragon
1952 Jan 27 to Feb 13, 1953: Water Dragon 1964 Feb 13 to Feb 1, 1965: Wood Dragon
1976 Jan 31 to Feb 17, 1977: Fire Dragon 1988 Feb 17 to Feb 5, 1989: Earth Dragon
2000 Feb 5 to Jan 23, 2001: Metal Dragon 2012 Jan 23 to Feb 9, 2013: Water Dragon

A taste for novelty reins supreme for Dragons in 2008, and unpredictability rules the year. Dragon's feel like a new adventure is always just around the corner in Rat years and it promises to be one of activity and excitement. Financially, assets increase, but interpersonal tiffs may be troublesome. Candid, demanding and fond of being in the public eye, Dragons shine during Rat ruled periods. Best chance for serious romance in September's Rooster ruled month. Prepare the stage for an energetic evening with a feisty Rooster, a sarcastic Monkey or an eclectic Rat. Best months: Feb, May, Aug, Sept. Challenging: March, April, June, July.

The SnakeSnake

..> ..>
1905 Feb 4 to Jan 24, 1906: Wood Snake 1917 Jan 23 to Feb 10, 1918: Fire Snake
1929 Feb 10 to Jan 29, 1930: Earth Snake 1941 Jan 27 to Feb 14, 1942: Metal Snake
1953 Feb 14 to Feb 2, 1954: Water Snake 1965 Feb 2 to Jan 20, 1966: Wood Snake
1977 Feb 18 to Feb 6, 1978: Fire Snake 1989 Feb 6 to Jan 26, 1990: Earth Snake
2001 Jan 24 to Feb 11, 2002: Metal Snake 2013 Feb 10 to Jan 30, 2014: Water Snake

A four star year for Snakes when money and wealth flows in freely. When it comes to lovemaking the Snake is a master and virtuoso, and sex is something they are capable of surrendering themselves to, body and soul. Be cautious however, as this Rat year may increase your taste for forbidden fruit. Single Snakes may consider marriage or commitment during April or May. Now is the time to expand your social circle, networks and contacts which will lead to great financial benefits. Recognition by colleagues and an opportunity for carer advancement should make this a particularly enjoyable year. Best months: April, May, June, Sept, Oct. Challenging: Feb, Mar, July.

The HorseHorse

..> ..>
1906 Jan 25 to Feb 12, 1907 : Fire Horse 1918 Feb 11 to Jan 31, 1919 : Earth Horse
1930 Jan 30 to Feb 16, 1931 : Metal Horse 1942 Feb 15 to Feb 4, 1943 : Water Horse
1954 Feb 3 to Jan 23, 1955 : Wood Horse 1966 Jan 21 to Feb 8, 1967 : Fire Horse
1978 Feb 7 to Jan 27, 1979: Earth Horse 1990 Jan 27 to Feb 14, 1991: Metal Horse
2002 Feb 12 to Jan 31, 2003: Water Horse 2014 Jan 31 to Feb 18, 2015: Wood Horse

Those born into Horse years are in opposition to the Rat and 2008 is a time for you to relax, vacation and take time for your physical, spiritual and mental health. A choice could be presented this year between your need for security and your need for independence. Never stop pursuing your dreams and ambitions, but keep everything status quo for now and wait for a more auspicious climate. Hold off on risky investments and be particularly cautious about anything that could cause problems with the law. Married Horses could be tempted by a love affair in July's Goat-ruled month. Best months: Feb, April, Aug. Challenging: Mar, June, Sept, Oct.

The GoatGoat

..> ..>
1907 Feb 13 to Feb 1, 1908 : Fire Goat 1919 Feb 1 to Feb 19, 1920 : Earth Goat
1931 Feb 17 to Feb 5, 1932 : Metal Goat 1943 Feb 5 to Jan 24, 1944 : Water Goat
1955 Jan 24 to Feb 11, 1956 : Wood Goat 1967 Feb 9 to Jan 29, 1968 : Fire Goat
1979 Jan 28 to Feb 15, 1980 : Earth Goat 1991 Feb 15 to Feb 3, 1992 : Metal Goat
2003 Feb 1 to Jan 21, 2004: Water Goat 2015 Feb 19 to Feb 7, 2016: Wood Goat

The Rat year and the Goat can be a comedy of errors, but nothing that can't be mitigated with good humor. By the time the leisurely Goat wakes-up to face the world, the energetic Rat has almost completed their day. Hyperactivity meets sloth in 2008 and the results can be inharmonious to say the least. Goats feel harried, hurried and hotheaded during Rat years, but careful planning will give you the edge. Journaling, writing poetry or putting pen to paper in any way will sooth your frazzled nerves and could produce some memorable work. Best months: April, May, June, Aug. Challenging: Jan 08, July, Jan 09.

The MonkeyMonkey

..> ..>
1908 Feb 2 to Jan 21, 1909: Earth Monkey 1920 Feb 20 to Feb 7, 1921 : Metal Monkey
1932 Feb 6 to Jan 25, 1933: Water Monkey 1944 Jan 25 to Feb 12, 1945 : Wood Monkey
1956 Feb 12 to Jan 30, 1957: Fire Monkey 1968 Jan 30 to Feb 16, 1969 : Earth Monkey
1980 Feb 16 to Feb 4, 1981: Metal Monkey 1992 Feb 4 to Jan 22, 1993 : Water Monkey
2004 Jan 22 to Feb 8, 2005: Wood Monkey 2016 Feb 8 to Jan 27, 2017: Fire Monkey

Monkeys will enjoy being in the compatibility trine (triangle) of harmony with this Rat year. April or May could see wedding bells ringing for you. Sexuality is explosive between Rat's and Monkey's and some exhausting nights of love await you in 2008. Intertwine your lovemaking with intellectual conversation from a sage Snake or discuss the cosmos with an otherworldly Dragon. You are in a very comfortable and prosperous position in 2008, but be discreet about your private life and selective in your social circles. Best months: April, May, Aug, Sept. Challenging: Feb, Mar, June, July.

The RoosterRooster

..> ..>
1909 Jan 22 to Feb 9, 1910 : Earth Rooster 1921 Feb 8 to Jan 27, 1922 : Metal Rooster
1933 Jan 26 to Feb 13, 1934 : Water Rooster 1945 Feb 13 to Feb 1, 1946 : Wood Rooster
1957 Jan 31 to Feb 17, 1958 : Fire Rooster 1969 Feb 17 to Feb 5, 1970 : Earth Rooster
1981 Feb 5 to Jan 24, 1982 : Metal Rooster 1993 Jan 23 to Feb 9, 1994 : Water Rooster
2005 Feb 9 to Jan 28, 2006: Wood Rooster 2017 Jan 28 to Feb 15, 2018: Fire Rooster

The Rat and the Rooster are in a "Peach blossom" relationship, responsible for torrid love affairs, and 2008 can produce an emotional roller-coaster ride for Rooster natives. This is a love/hate year of polarized emotions when your beloved will seem either enchanting or unbearable. This is a complicated pairing of energies and this Peach blossoms connection can easily become "forbidden fruit" so the utmost caution regarding romantic affairs is advised. Female Hens are very fertile year and pregnancy as well as marriage are strong possibilities. Build a cozy nest with a home loving Ox, sensual Snake or competent Dragon. Best months: April, May, Dec, Jan 2009. Challenging: March, June, July, Oct.

The DogDog

..> ..>
1910 Feb 10 to Jan 29, 1911 : Metal Dog 1922 Jan 28 to Feb 15, 1923 : Water Dog
1934 Feb 14 to Feb 3, 1935 : Wood Dog 1946 Feb 2 to Jan 21, 1947 : Fire Dog
1958 Feb 18 to Feb 7, 1959 : Earth Dog 1970 Feb 6 to Jan 26, 1971 : Metal Dog
1982 Jan 25 to Feb 12, 1983 : Water Dog 1994 Feb 10 to Jan 30, 1995 : Wood Dog
2006 Jan 29 to Feb 3, 2007: Fire Dog 2018 Feb 16 to Feb 4, 2019: Earth Dog

The relationship between the Rat and Dog resembles that of a parent/child power struggle with possible confrontations or misunderstandings. Don't borrow or use funds that are not yours for any reason this year and keep all business deals completely above board. Take time off to relax and recharge your batteries and love will be in the air. A romantic getaway with a savvy Rabbit, passionate Tiger or talkative Horse will have you howling at the moon! Be realistic in your planning and avoid wishful thinking for best results. Best months: Feb, June, Aug, Oct, Nov. Challenging: Apr, July, Sept.

The PigPig

..> ..>
1911 Jan 30 to Feb 17, 1912 : Metal Pig 1923 Feb 16 to Feb 4, 1924 : Water Pig
1935 Feb 4 to Jan 23, 1936 : Wood Pig 1947 Jan 22 to Feb 9, 1948 : Fire Pig
1959 Feb 8 to Jan 27, 1960 : Earth Pig 1971 Jan 27 to Jan 15, 1972 : Metal Pig
1983 Feb 13 to Feb 1, 1984 : Water Pig 1995 Jan 31 to Feb 18, 1996 : Wood Pig
2007 Feb 18 to Feb 6, 2008: Fire Pig 2019 Feb 5 to Jan 24, 2020: Earth Pig

A harmonious and successful year awaits trusting Pig natives in 2008. There is a risk of you becoming opinionated and judgmental this year so consider that every situation has two sides to it. Your modesty will give you the edge in working with people this year. You are hardworking, but also fond of pleasure. Many opportunities for love affairs during 2008, so be cautious of scandals. Both the Rat and the Pig share the hidden element of Water in their branches bringing emotion, depth and adaptability to circumstances. Best months: Feb, Mar, April, July Challenging: May, August, Nov.
