SFX Demonstartion & JOHNNY GRUESOME Signing
Hi, there:
Tomorrow--Saturday, Oct. 11th--special effects artist David Gray will be giving an SFX demonstration outside the Borders Express bookstore in the Eastern Hills Mall on Transit Road from 10 AM - 12 Noon. He'll be transforming local musican Ryan O'Connell into "Johnny Gruesome," the title character in my novel JOHNNY GRUESOME. David did the SFX, and Johnny starred as Johnny, in a music video we did based on the book:

David will be gluing a latex appliance to Ryan's face and painting it, and will be happy to take questions during the process.
I will then be signing copies of JOHNNY GRUESOME in the bookstore.
Hope to see you there!
Best, Greg Lamberson www.slimeguy.com

CHEAP Reviews
Some time ago, I sent Michael Louis Calvillo, who writes very cool video games for Fear Zone, a Word doc of CHEAP SCARES! for feedback. He asked if he could review the book for FZ as well. His review is up today:

I swear I didn't stand over him with a hatchet, and we live on different ends of the country.
The other review is an entirely different type. Joseph Fusco, a good friend of mine, with whom I worked on the crime drama WEST NEW YORK, and who had a small role in NAKED FEAR--he was also my assistant manager and Two Boots Video and the Paris Theatre--called me the other day and told me he was halfway finished shooting his first micro-budget feature. It isn't a horror flick, but he credited CHEAP SCARES with inspiring him to take the plunge. This stunned me: Joe has been a filmmaker his entire adult life, and has certainly known his share of other filmmakers, but he never through caution to the wind until he read my book. The kicker is he says he's never been happier, and this makes me quite happy.

Busted
The local signings have been busts; I actually did better with PERSONAL DEMONS, probably because I had a very good review in Artvoice and no local reviews at all this time around (though I'm told AV will be doing something on both JOHNNY GRUESOME and CHEAP SCARES for their Hallowen issue (which seems so far away).
On the bright side, I got my author copies of CHEAP SCARES today and they look great!

Buffalo promotions picking up steam
Finally found time to make flyers for tomorrow night's signing/reading at Talking Leaves Books on Main Street. Then I received a box from Medallion with a shit load of Johnny Gruesome tattoos, amgnests, postcards, etc., so I put together packages for my next few signings and dropped some off at different locations. Added a guest appearance to a local comic book show Sunday, which means my week looks like this:
Wed - Signing/ Reading @ Talking Leaves, 7 - 9
Thurs Off
Fri - Signing/reading with a whole posse at McMasters University in Hamilton, 7 - 10
Sat - SFX make-up demonstration and signing at Borders Express/Eastern Hills Mall, then a drive to the Eerie Horror Film Festival in Pa, where I'll represent Fear Zone and prep the bookstore there for a signing the following week
Sun - Comic book convention with Matty Mask
I don't even remember what's on for next week. I also have a tentative radio interview scheduled for tomorrow afternoon between 2 and 3 on 103 The Edge, Buffalo's coolest rock station.

Gruesome Buffalo
Looks like Artvoice will be covering both JOHNNY GRUESOME and CHEAP SCARES in their Halloween issue, which is appropriate. After msot of my signings, but sales are what count, whether they're by me or a sales associate. It also appears that I'll be signing at the busy B & N on Niagara Falls Blvd. sometime in November.
This Wednesday I'm at Talking Leaves on Main Street from 7 PM - 9 PM, where I'm doing my only scheduled U.S. reading.

I’ve had better signings--
-and I've had worse.
The Community Relations Manager at this Barnes & Noble was very nice, set me up at a li'l desk (more like a lamp table) near the entrance, and kept announcing me as "Jeffrey Lamberson." I realized immediately that the flyers I'd made up 2 weeks earlier were acomplete waste of many as they were never set out on the counter, just at my table at the time of my appearance. The banner display terrified people all right, no one even looked in my direction! Sitting there, I realized that of all the signings I've done this was the firstone I did alone--in the past Tamar has usually been with me, or other authors at a mass signing. This was just me vs. many seniors and kids too young for this particular book.
Things improved after about 20 agonizing minutes when G "Big Tim" Mondee ("Leatherface" at Rotten Jack's Creep Show) stopped by and gave me someone to chat with. I have no family in town other than the wife and offspring, so I was glad a friend took a few minutes to come by and give me some support (:IF you're not an atlete, be an athletic supporter!"Almost immediately, the first casual customer bought a copy. This didn't exactly lead to a "rush," but I made a few sales to total strangers, which was nice, and the CRM had me sign 10 copies for inventory before I left. At least 2 people mentioned that Buffalo News article, so I'm damned glad it ran. All in all not a disaster since I only live 20 minutes away.
I then visited the Borders at the Eastern Hills Mall next door, where I was relieved to learn that the tattoo sporting staff had been handing out their flyers. Since they seemed into it, I gave them a small stack of Johnny tattoos to hand out, courtesy of Medallion. My signing there next Saturday will be prefaced by a 2-hour SFX demonstration in which make-up maestro David Gray will once again transform Ryan O'Connell (star of the GRUESOME music video) into Johnny. I also visited Talking Leaves Books on Main Street, in a cooler part of town, and gave them a stack of tattoos as well. I'm signing and reading there this Wed, and the flyers I gave them a week ago were already gone. That's why I made them...
After rejoining my loved ones, we made a family excursion to the Barnes & Noble on Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst. I suspect this is the busiest B & N in Buffalo. The CRM there didn't even bother to return my call a couple of months ago when I tried to set up a signing. This is the store I wanted to visit on Wed, when JOHNNY officially came out, but I had that flat tire. New releases? No. Halloween table? No (but there was a stack of Gord Rollo's JIGSAW MAN, face up). Fiction and Literature? No (but there were three copies of Gary Frank's INSTITUTIONAL MEMORY, face out). I told myself I wasn't going to speak to a sales associate if I didn't see the book, but I did anyway. The silver lining in this cloud formation is that they had received the book and sold out of it without any help (or expense) from me. The guy didn't know how many copies they'd had, but I'm guessing three.
One down.
