WRITE for SMITH magazine
Current mood: busy
Category: Writing and Poetry
At SMITH Were interested in all sorts of personal stories, so dont feel bound by these categories. But these spots are good places to start.
Memoirville: Have a memoir you're working on, or just a personal story you want to share? Send it to us and we'll consider it for Memoirville, a spot where stories from the pros mix with unpublished memoirs in progress.
My Diary: These are reader-created journals about your life in transition (like Cree, who moved back to New Orleans or Ben who's converting from Judiasm to Greek-Orthodox), your wild job (like Tate, who's the Internet guru for a political campaign), or other notion that you think others will want to read about. If you want to keep a diary, send us your idea and a writing sample and we'll be get right back to you.
Brushes With Fame: What happens when a celebrity unexpectedly entered your sphere like an alien, landing? We want to know (in 300 words or less). Maybe you met Sharon Stone in line to meet the Dalai Lama, ran into Jon Stewart at the dressing room of the Gap, or somehow have Mick Jaggers urine in your freezer. These things happen. If you've caught a celeb making out with someone he shouldnt have been or making an ass of himself at a pretentious bar, save it for Page 6 and Gawkerwere interested in an actual personal encounter, not gotchas.
My Ex: Weve all got ex-lovers, partners, husbands, wives. Some we equate with beautiful moments of love. Others were train wrecks. Whats your favorite ex story? Tell us in 1000 words. Tell us in just 50 words. But tell us (and youll feel better, too). The best My Ex stories will be includes in our forthcoming book.
Check out the mag. Then jump in -- the water's excellent.

Larry SMITH blogs for Huffington Post on SHOOTING WAR
Current mood: chipper

Larry SMITH in The Huffington Post on SHOOTING WAR
I'm the editor of SMITH: Everyone Has a Story, an online magazine about storytelling in its many shapes and forms. Our hottest read right now is the webcomic Shooting War, a near-future, media-obsessed story about a Brooklyn blogger who heads to still-war-torn Iraq after witnessing a terrorist attack on Williamsburg soil. When I read Anthony Lappé's synopsis of Shooting War just a few month ago--a storyline based in part on his own experiences over there--I was blown away. Was Shooting War a novel? A movie? A videogame? Could it be a graphic novel? Bingo. And if so, why not publish it online and try to turn it into a book later? Anthony and I connected with the amazing illustrator Dan Goldman (who's a founder of the online comic collective ACT-I-VATE, and Shooting War began to take shape. Set in 2011, Shooting War depicts a dark future, one in which the war in Iraq drags on, gas prices are as you might expect, and the whole megillah's coming apart at the seams--despite the efforts of President John McCain. Our protagonist, Jimmy Burns, is an anti-corporate video-blogger catapulted to fame when he captures the latest terrorist attack on his videoblog, beams it to the world and suddenly finds himself working for Global News ("Your home for 24-hour terror coverage"), an outfit that makes Fox look like Air America. Using Dan Goldman's images, a soundtrack by DJ Spooky and real audio Anthony Lappé recorded while in Iraq, we created an intro video with a killer interactive media shop called Indelible. Rolling Stone calls Shooting War "scary smart." The Village Voice's Julian Dibbell writes, "[T]he light-handed but searing political satire of Shooting War is taking the Sunday comic strip places it could never have gone before." EW's Popwatch says, "the comic's 'trailer' opens up a completely new way to tell stories with still pictures." But what do they know? See for yourself on SMITH.

SMITH on NEWSARAMA: Shooting War, online graphic novel about Iraq War to launch on SMITH
Click on the logo to read an interview on Newsarama with writer Anthony Lappé & artist Dan Goldman. SHOOTING WAR launches next week on 5/15 at SMITH magazine.
New York, NY The year is 2011, and Jimmy Burns, a young reporter / blogger for Global TV (GTV), has just seen his Williamsburg apartment blown to bits by yet another terrorist attack on New York City. He's recorded the gruesome scene on his videoblog camerafootage Burns beams live to a freaked-out world and that makes him an overnight media sensation. Exploited by his own network (Global TV: "Your home for 24-hour terror coverage"), enraged by the terrorists, and determined to tell the American people the truth, Burns takes off for Iraq to get the real story of a war that's been raging for more than eight years. SHOOTING WAR is written by Anthony Lappé and illustrated by Dan Goldman.
Inspired by Lappés own experiences shooting an award-winning documentary and blogging about the Iraq war, SHOOTING WAR is a fictional story about the future of citizen journalism. SHOOTING WAR is a first of its kind: a serialized online graphic novel about the war, presented with Flash animation flourishes, using actual sounds recorded in Iraqand offered exclusively on SMITH (www.smithmag.net). A new chapter will appear each week.
SHOOTING WAR is a commentary about where were headed in Iraq and the larger war on terror as well as the role of bloggers in telling the stories of the future," says Lappé. "This is my first foray into graphic fiction, so teaming up with a slamming artist, brimming with street cred like Dan Goldman, and a magazine that's so forward-thinking gives me the confidence its the right time, team, and place for this tale thats been brewing in my mind since the day I left Iraq.
SMITH editor Larry Smith is thrilled to present SHOOTING WAR on SMITH, the magazine he launched online this past January to much critical acclaim. "SMITH magazine is the perfect home for SHOOTING WAR," he says. "SMITH is all about the next wave of personal storytelling, using and celebrating the technology tools that have made new forms of telling stories so exciting. SHOOTING WAR embodies our ethos, but ultimately, what drew me to the project was the power of this narrative. Its dark, smart, sexy, and violent with much to please both the comics fan and those not yet hip to the medium."
"Anthony's created a slipstream near-future where the whole world is now the Third World and our foreign policy karma's come home to roost," says Goldman. "Were talking reverberations and repercussionsif a picture is worth a thousand words, SHOOTING WAR will speak volumes."

SMITH mag seeks design intern
Do you know Web design and want to be part of a cool, hungry new magazine not owned by Murdoch, Time, Inc. or Conde Nast? Then SMITH wants to talk to you.
We're an indie start-up--small, largely virtual, targeted, and comprised of the smartest, coolest, least pretentious people you're ever going to meet in media. This is a great opportunity to get some practical experience at the ground level of a new Web and eventually print-based publication. You'll be working and getting to know people with years of experience at some of the top magazines in the industry--Wired, ESPN, Mens Journal, Real Simple, and other places. This internship requires 5-10 hours a week to start, and could ramp up to 10-15 hours.
You'll need to be comfortable with: * Wordpress (a must!) * Flash, PHP or other scripting language * Web graphics (Fireworks a plus) * Handwriting HTML code (not Dreamweaver)
Send email with bio/resume and links to your portfolio to info@smithmag.us.
