Defying The Angry Gods Of Nature

Last Saturday night we played an outdoor show on the patio of a local Chapel Hill bar, The Dead Mule. Forcasters called for rain but all day the sun was shining. We showed up early and started to set up. When we were all set up and about to play the winds started to pick up. Small particals of dust and debris swirled around and the skies darkened. Lightning was flasing in the distance and we we're not sure if we should just pack up and call it quits or go ahead and start our set. The crowd cheered us on and we started into the set. As we would play each song it seemed the gods of nature we're pleased by what they heard. The sun would come out and there would be no threat of rain. But then, after every song was over the wind would pick back up, lighnting would strike and it would darken again. We hurry into the next song and the sun would shine again.
About ten songs in, feeling we had figured it out and thinking the worst was over, we broke into "Another Song Ray Hates." We we're almost to the end and that's when it happenned. The gods had had enough! Large droplets of rain started to fall, I felt one on my fretboard and saw one hit the keyboard. We all started to feel the rain but did we stop? No! We finished the song where at which point, Matt K killed the power to the patio and we started to cover everything up. Then the clouds burst open and a full sheet of precipitation drenched the entire patio without letting up. People hurried inside to escape it's onslaught but we we're stuck out on the patio trying to pack up what we could and move it inside before all our gear was destroyed. After everything was protected, we made our way inside to warm up. Drenched from head to toe we had defied the Gods of Nature for at least for 10 songs.

MC Chris, Pulling Hair, and Singing with Apples
Current mood: busy
Category: Music
I woke up around 10am and Mark was already up. We set out to catch the Dillo downtown. Our first stop was CVS to pick up some drinks to replenish our dehydrated bodies and some Advil to stop the pounding in my head. I really wanted something substantial to eat so it was decided we would go to the flagship Whole Foods and get something to eat there.
Once we had food in our bellies we took the bus to the Yep Roc 10 year anniversary party. On the line-up was American Princes, Los Straitjackets, Apples In Stereo etc. They had free beer, free Southern Comfort Slushies/Punch and Free Texas BBQ with potato salad and cole slaw. We saw a lot of the people we met at the Yep Roc showcase the night before. We stated drinking and although we weren't hungary tried the Texas BBQ anyway. We saw American Princes and Los Straitjackets play. The Princes rocked and Los Straightjackets were great to watch and hear. We got a call from Moose and he wanted to sit down with us and talk shop so we told him to meet us at The Yep Roc Party. He walked in and watched some of the music and then asked if we wanted to catch a cab with him up to Waterloo to check out, I believe, Les Breastfeeders. We ditched the party and got into a cab where Moose started asking us a bunch of questions about our situation with the label and all our plans to promote the new album. Moose and his wife Mary Elizabeth run a small management company. We had been hitting them up for free advice for the past month or so and it was good to sit down and talk shop. We talked for about and Hour and a half and missed the showcase at waterloo. Then we caught the bus back down to congress. Bidding Moose a fond farewell Mark and I got off the bus near Guadalupe.
We heard a band we thought was Sloan and decided to crash the party. It wasn't Sloan but it was the Jane Magazine Party. We knew it was RSVP only but we just walked in anyway. The stage was outside under a big tent. I watched a bit of the band that was on and then decided to explore. I walked into the bar and spotted someone DJ'ing inside. Then I found some stairs and went to the second floor. I found all kinds of snakcks including these amazing panini sandwiches. I grabbed a couple panini's and made my way upstairs to the roof. On the roof were some tables and a bar. I walked up to the bar and order a free Seagrams screwdriver. I looked around and noticed that everyone up ther had yello wristbands. Then I noticed a lady at the door checking to make sure everybody had yellow wristbands. I guess she was busy talking when I walked through. I text mark, "Hey I'm eating panini sandwich's on the roof and I don't think I supposed to be here" Shortly there after Mark joined me on the roof. He just walked through the door. He thought the girl might have asked him something but He was already waving at me and I guess she figured he was suppose to be up there. He asked me if Sloan was going on yet and I told him to ask Sloan guitarist, Patrick Pentland who was standing right behind Mark. Mark decided not to ask him anything. After a while we got bored hanging on the VIP roof and decided to get more sandwiches and drinks and watch some music. Sloan finally hit the stage and we made friends with a group of people excited about Sloan. Most of them were from Canada. Sloan was amazing as always. They make other bands look like they forgot to do their homework. When Sloan was done I hung around a bit and the the staff actually started pouring me Seagrams doubles with no ice! Mak went to meet up with his Bother to watch Public Enemy* and I stayed and drank more screwdrivers.
When the Jane Party was over I made my way back to congress and decided to get a slice of pizza. I don't know why, I was full of stew, BBQ, and Paninis. I sat down and read the print version of The Onion. I tried an energy drink that someone had left on a table (Gross, I know, but can you even imagine how drunk I am at this point?). I noticed this cute girl was sitting by herself and I joined her and gave her a free t-shirt I got at the Jane party. This was just about the time I needed to head up to 8th street to catch our old pal MC Chris perform at the Karma Lounge. Me and the cute girl walked up there together since she was meeting a friend that way to.
When I got to Karma Lounge they we're checking wristbands at the door but I just went around them and walked upstairs. I saw MC setting up and he was all by himself. No DJ John or Bucky. I called Mark and he said he was on his way. While I was killing time I bought a shot for a random girl. I pulled some jewish girl's hair as part of a lesson she was teaching in rough sex. I joined some people by the stage and I started texting with this girl in the booth. It was all blurry and weird from this point and I would love to tell you that we all went back to some posh hotel room to party and get it on but alas Mark showed up and saved me from saying anything embarrassing. We chatted with MC while he was selling T-shirts and closed out our tabs at the bar. Mark said he was beat and he needed to go home. I told him I'd catch up with him later and made my way to catch Sloan and Apples in Stereo.
When I got to the bar there was a line of people waiting to get in. They all had wristbands and badges but the bar was at capacity. I tried to paid the cover to get in but that didn't work. I noticed to front of the bar was opne and the only thing separating me and watching sloan was a small railing. I went to the far end and asked the guy by the railing if he could move for a second while I sneak in. He said sure and I jumped, drunkenly over the rail. I got about 10 steps into the bar when the security chick grabs me and starts physically pulling me out of the bar. I told her she didn't need to grab me and she should stop. She didn't so I stopped until she would let go. This got the attention fo the Ownere and the main door guy. They asked me why I was grabbing the girl! I told them she was grabbing me because she caught me sneaking in but she didn't need to be so rough. My lesson in rough sex earlier in the night gave me my fill of tough love. I explained that I wasn't trying to cause any trouble but I was a huge fan of Sloan and really wanted to watch the showcase. The owner seemed to understand but he said there was no way he could let me in. I walked out the front door on my own accord. I had lost this battle but I wasn't about to give up. I decided to walk to the back. The bar had anartist entrance and as I approached a familiar face walked out. It was Robert from Apples In Stereo. He recognized me and and went "Hey, you need to sing on my song!" I was like "OK, which one?" I hadn't known the new songs all that well if at all. He goes, "Ruby" from Her Wallpaper Reverie. I had that album and I knew exactly was he was talking about. He asked me if I could sing the ba-ba-bas. I said "Sure but I can't get into the club because I don't have a badge or anything" Rob walked up to the door guy and said "can you stamp him please,he's with my band?
(pause here to relish in the coolness of this particular moment in time)
The door guy stamps my hand and I walk right into the back entrance. There was a bar in the back and I started a tab. I laid low until it was time to sing. Tammy from Dressy Bessy was there and she was also asked to sing on Ruby. I bought her a beer and we chatted a little bit while we waited for our cue. Then it came time for Ruby. I jumped on stage and they handed me a tamborine. It was me, Tammy, rob's wife ( it was her birthday) and the rest of the apples on stage at SXSW! I thanked Rob profusely and made my way out the back. I was spotted by the owner and he yelled, " Hey," and then in some kind of odd respect and approval he says "You got on stage." Indeed I did but now I'm in the back alley just buzzin from the events of the past 12 hours and I start chatting up some ladies in the back alley. In mid conversation this guy walks up and joins in. I drunkenly go, hey! "You look like the guy from Harvey Danger!" and he goes I am. I don't know why but I had a hard time believing him and thought he was just fucking with me. It was him.
* Mark will post separatly about the Public Enemy Show

SXSW - Yep Roc - Barsuk- David Byrne?
Current mood: rushed
Category: Music
Day TwoPart two"Two years, Too late" After a quick shower and a change of cloths. We went back out to hit the town. We noticed on the schedule that our pals from Little Rock, AR the American Princes we're playing with the The Moaners (a Chapel Hill band) at a Yep Roc Records Showcase. The cover was $15 for non-badge holders. Since it was our first night out we thought it would be a good idea just to go ahead pay the cover. Later we would attempt to perfect the art of getting in for free. When we walked in the American Princes had started their set already. The club look like a roadhouse biker bar/music haunt and most of the people there looked a little older. Mark knows ??? from The Moaners and we chatted her up a bit while she waited to go on. I asked her if she was excited and she said "I'm actually really nervous." It is a label showcase and the bosses are watching so I guess it can be pretty nerve-racking.
The "Princes" finished up and loaded off stage. They were surprised to see us but they also seemed a little road weary and tired. This wasn't their first performance at SXSW 2007 nor would it be their last. Often times bands play multiple sets throughout the course of the conference and sometimes more than one set a day. Some official, some not, these performances get you a lot more exposure. With so many bands playing these things it's not always easy to get to a showcase and it's hard to choose one showcase over another.
We started recognizing some Chapel Hill people and started introducing ourselves to various people who work for Yep Roc and Red Eye. Before we left for Austin we had sent Red Eye our new cd and we're waiting to hear back from them on whether or not they would distribute it. We would casually mention this from time to time but for the most part we just talked about our band a little bit and Tar Heel basketball. When the Moaners hit the stage Mark and I already had a few drinks in us and the Texas BBQ cooking out on the smoking patio was starting to smell really good. The Moaners set was high energy and the crowd was really into them.Laura is commanding on the drums and Melissa exudes a rock star coolness very few people can pull off convincingly. As I may my way to the bar to get another Lone Star (the PBR of Texas) I spot a guy wearing a Carrboro, NC t-shirt just like the one Mark owns. Carrboro and Chapel Hill are right next to each other. Some might say they are one of the same but that could spark a debate that could lead to a NC civil war, so I won't say that. I say "Nice shirt!" the guy says "Thanks, are you from there? I say yes " Yeah, my name is Seamus and my band SNMNMNM lives there." He says, "My name is Tor, I own Yep Roc Records and you are my son's favorite substitute teacher." It was the funniest conversation I think I had all week.
Next, A bunch of local blues legends hit the stage. All the locals were freaking out but Mark and I had other things to attend to. We ate some BBQ, said good bye to all the people we head met, and took off for more adventures. Next stop was the Elephant Room to watch our buddies from L.A., Kneebody. They actualy weren't going on until 1am and it was only midnight. We said we were meeting some friends and the girl let us in without badges. They weren't inside yet so Mark decided he'd wait for them to show up to the club which gave me the freedom to go to the Barsuk Records showcase to catch Aqueduct and Menomena. I used the same line at the door. "Hey, I supposed to meet some friends here, can I go in a see if they are here, if they are I'll come back and pay the cover." This worked on both the two guys working the door and I went upstairs. I saw the guys from American Princes. They were excited, they had just caught a secret performance by David Byrne! We played with Aqueduct a couple of years ago. They have a new album out and played a bunch of new songs. They also pulled out my favorite from the first record. "Growing Up GNR"
We met the guys from Menomena the last time they were in Chaple Hill. They crashed at my house and I made them eggs for breakfast. I saw the drummer back by the merch table and I said hi. He remembered me and gave me a big hug. He also gave me his drink tickets since no one in Menomena drinks alcohol. Back to the bar I hunkered down to watch their set. Menomena records their own albums and are quite particular about their sound. They took a long time to do their sound check but it was well worth it. It sounded explosive. A lot more intense than on the album and the album is pretty intense. The club turned on the house lights 15 maybe 20min into their set. Cutting their set short. I got to talk to them afterwards and told them I was looking forward to their show in Chapel Hill on April 1st. They asked me, besides me and my roomate Duane, who else neede to be on the guest list. I asked if I could get a PLUS 3 for the rest of SNMNMNM assnd they said, "No problem." I also saw David Terry of Aqueduct and asked him if he got my email apology for the incident where I jumped on stage and tried to sing harmonies with him at CMJ 2005. He said "Yeah, two years, too late." At CMJ 2005 I showed him my badge and asked him if I could sing harmony on a song. He nodded and I asked whether or not he wanted me to sing the high harmony or the low. He said "sing the high." When we got to the first harmony we both sang the high part and it was a train wreck for the rest of the song. I guess he's still a little perturbed with me. I was totally wasted so I hope he forgives me :) I left the club and went back to the Elephant Room to meet back up with Mark. He had met up with Kneebody and they got him into the showcase no problem. When I got there they had all finished up. I caught up those guys a little and Mark and I decided to walk back to home base. Wasted and tired but feeling pretty happy with how the days events unfolded we walked 17 blocks back to Matt's apartment.

SXSW Blog - David Cross and More
Category: Music
Day Two Part One "Hello Austin!" For a brief moment on the plane in between naps and listening to Doug Stanhope-Something To Take The Edge Off and Nada Surf-Let Go, I thought I heard the captain say "Tampa" and we started to descend. I was so sleepy when we boarded that it occurred to me I might be on the wrong flight. Luckily that was not the case. It was just a short layover in Tampa, FL where you don't get off the plane. I dozed off again and when I woke up we we're descending upon Austin. We had arranged to have Mark's older brother pick us up. Mark's brother, like our drummer and guitar player is also named Matt. He lives in Austin and has agreed to put us up while we we're in town. He works for U.T. and lives really close to downtown. His apartment would be our home base for the next few days and serve as a place for showers, laundry and internet. Mark's brother picked us up at the airport. Showed us the place where he and his fiancé "Addy" ( the same Addy from our song "Addy Will Know) will get married and cruised by some other points of interest. Once at the apartment, He offers me a beer he brewed himself. It's not even noon yet and I already have a pint of beer in my hand! Wasting no time he then gives us a run down of our local public transportation options. The Dillo, an old-fashioned, trolly-like bus with no real suspension to speak of, are free to the public. Color-coded, the "Gold" Dillo takes us directly to our first event. Once on the Dillo we notice that the city has been overrun by SXSW attendees. Everyone was wearing badges and looking over the days schedule and other official conference materials. We learned from our CMJ 2005 experience that the real fun comes in the form of free day parties. Unofficial events NOT listed in the official conference materials. A lot of these are word of mouth or invite only but they are free and usually have some kind of sponsor providing free libations.
The first day party on our list was the CMJ Texas Tea Party. It located downtown in a bar called Speakeasy. Aptly named for it's back door, alley entrance, Speakeasy provided the setting for the first of many fun, weird, cool, and awkward chance encounters. Walking up we saw our pals Character from Nashville, TN. They were just hanging out in the alley shaking off last night's hangover, looking for something to or something to eat. At the door was the infamous Moose, editor for CMJ magazine. We met him in New York during CMJ 2005 and his wife is a huge fan of SNMNMNM. Needless to say we had no problems getting in despite the fact it was RSVP only. Once inside we ran into Charlotte's own The Sammies. We played with them before and they are some of the nicest guys you'd ever get to meet. CMJ Texas Tea Party was sponsored by Dewars, a blended scotch whisky. Now Mark and I don't drink scotch whisky but when drinks are free and your broke, it's hard to turn it down. The band playing when we entered the bar was Rock Plaza Central. They had two trumpet players, one of which doubled on accordion. Another band went on, Cyan and Ben and I had a few more drinks. It was dark inside so I would often go out to the alley to remind myself what time of day it was. On one of these occasions I ran into Jessica from Terrorbird. She used to work for Fanatic Promotion out of NYC and helped promote our last cd. She is so sweet and friendly she's hard not to love. She told us about her new company and then gave us some hot leads on some more day parties.
Mark and I got hungry. We decided to take a break from drinking Dewar's and go up the street to get some food. We sat and ate burritos while looking over a schedule of showcases. We jotted down our plan in a notebook and headed back to the party. We got back in time to watch Apples In Stereo. The keyboard player looked a little like he could be my brother. After watching a handful of songs Mark went outside to have a smoke and I followed him. We were standing near some dumpsters and out of the corner of my eye I spotted one of our favorite comedians and actors, David Cross. I really wanted to meet him but I didn't want to come off as a gushing fan. I quickly thought to myself, "Play it cool" and blurted out the phrase " Hello sir." He stopped and said, "What's up?" This, we were not expecting, and Mark and I were tongue-tied. Mark hadn't realized it until was David Cross until it was too late and I, a little drunk at this point, managed to say, "There's a pretty cool party inside." He turned abruptly with no words and went inside. I will now go on record and say that that was the most awkward meeting of SXSW 2007.
I was still standing in the alley when "The Apples" we're loading out. I said "Great job!" to the guy who looked like my long lost brother and he asked me if I was in a band. I introduced him to Mark and told him a little about SNMNMNM. Then I told him about the awkward meeting I had just with David Cross. He told me not to worry about it. He told me his wife is Michael Stipe's assistant and that although he has met him countless times, he still finds himself tongue-tied and refers to him as Mr. Stipe. Just then Rob, the singer of Apples In Stereo, walks up and says "Hi!" Rob is hyper friendly and completely the antithesis of the whole cool rock star attitude that so many of the bands playing SXSW exude. My "brother," who's name is Bill, introduces us and tells him we're in SNMNMNM. Rob, in his intense and exciting way goes, " Oh, from Chapel Hill! Our new label is from there." We nodded but not quite fully realizing how cool it was to have the singer of Apples in Stereo know where you band is from. The new "Apples" album is out on Yep Roc Records, which is indeed based out of Chapel Hill. It is also paired with a distribution company called Red Eye. More mention of them later. The last band of the CMJ Party was Les Savy Fav. I had seen the name and had no idea what to expect. As they set up I noticed that they looked like your typical Brooklyn based dance rock band complete with the beards and black frame glasses. Except the singer, who was the big hairy guy in a tie-die shirt. It was amazing! He had an amazing stage presence and the band played very well. We watched a few more songs but Mark and I decided it was time for a shower. We left the party and waited at the nearest Dillo stop. While leaving the party we saw a bunch of people walking around with Guitar Hero guitars. A guy at the Dillo stop had one too and said he got it at a party above Speakeasy. He worked for Hopeless Records out of Van Nuys, Ca and gave us his card. We gave him our three-song promo cd and talked about Atom and His Package. We hopped on the Dillo and we we're off to home base.

SXSW Blog Part One
Current mood: accomplished
Category: Music
Mark and Seamus Go to SXSW Prologue-Crashing The Party SNMNMNM wanted to play SXSW 2007. One little problem, We didn't apply for a showcase. If you want to play, you have to apply for a showcase and there is always a deadline involved. We had either forgotten to apply and missed the deadline (which we have done in the past) or decided not to apply because lead guitarist/trumpet player, Matt Kenney, was getting married the week after. No one remembers which reason it was but in either case, the reality was, we were NOT playing SXSW this year. Our experience with these music conferences has been limited. We played CMJ 2005. Our showcase was on the first day, in front of a healthy sized crowd at a small club. It was short and sweet which tends to be the norm for these things. Often bands feel jaded by the whole experience because they bust their ass to get to NY or Austin just to play one 25min set, converting only a handful of new fans. All the while, hearing everyone talk about seeing the buzz band of the moment (i.e. Girl Talk… or Arcade Fire etc.) it's one big shock to your ego. It's like, "Hey, your band's doing real well back in you hometown why not come to the big city so you can truly feel how insignificant you are!" Sounds like an offer no bands should refuse huh? But we we're prepared. It was suggested to us that if all you do is drive, play the show, and then leave, you are wasting a great opportunity. With so much going on, the important 'thing' is not necessarily your one little showcase but it's everything else that's going on. You must go to as many events, seminars, day parties etc. as possible. See some bands, go to a panel discussion and meet the everyday people who keep the music industry going. It almost seems obvious but if you have someone working college radio for you or press, you might want to meet them in person. Don't you think? Buy them a beer or just introduce yourself. So often you forget that the reason these people work in music is because it's something that matters to them personally. You can see it when you meet them face to face. With that in mind we played our CMJ 2005 showcase and it was a lot of fun. Matt Kenney and Matt Vooris took the rental van back to North Carolina while Mark (Amplified Tuba) and I stayed in New York City for the rest of the festival. The crazy events and chance meetings that occurred while Mark and I were in New York are worthy of it's their own big blog. But to sum up, we met some of the people who were promoting our latest album at that time. We got to see some great bands. We talked with everyone we could from college radio status to record company executives. Introducing ourselves, talking about our band and getting contact information so we can keep in touch. Since 2007 will bring about the release of our latest full-length album, Not being able to play SXSW 2007 was a tragic convergence of circumstance. But to not even attend SXSW would be, for us, downright idiocy. Like forgetting a deadline.
Anyone can attend SXSW, you don't need to be "in" the industry, you just need to be willing to pay for the laminated badge that gets you into most events. These badges don't come cheap. This years badges ran from $250 (student badge) to a $950 "God" badge. Way too expensive for a couple of broke musicians but we decided we would attempt to go anyway. Instead of playing a showcase we would do everything else. No badges, No wristbands, . Punk rock style. Day One Let The Drinking Begin! SXSW is a huge three part, film, music, interactive, conference that runs for over 2 weeks. This year, the music portion of the conference started on Wednesday, March 14th. This would have been me and Mark's first day at SXSW but SNMNMNM had an offer to play in Raleigh, NC that night. It was for good money so although we we're missing the first day of SXSW we would at least have some money on hand to buy food and drinks. It's a newer bar and there's a built-in crowd. We filled up the two set lists with some recently learned cover songs. We played the first set a little tight but after a short break and some complimentary beverages from the bar, we we're a lot more loose for the second. Finishing up, more drinking ensued and then came load out. I was putting something in the back of Mark's car and I slipped on some loose gravel. It happened so fast I just laughed to myself as I lay on a patch of loose gravel. Half on the road and half on the sidewalk. After load out it was decided that we would go to Waffle House for some late night eats. After being served by the oldest woman alive, Miss Betty, Mark and I crashed in Raleigh with Matt Vooris and his wife. We got exactly one hour sleep before we were off to the airport.

Special Valentines Message
Current mood: excited
What happened to SNMNMNM??? So, unless you live in North Carolina, you might be wondering what the hell happened to us and asking yourself.... "Wasn't there supposed to be a new cd!?!" "Wasn't there supposed to be a tour !?! " "Doesn't SNMNMNM love me anymore?!?" Of course, there is a new cd, and we will tour again. It just didn't happen in 2006. The good thing is YES, we still love you. We just needed some space to get our heads together and figure out what we really wanted out of this relationship. Well, we're done lying and giving false promises. It's time for SNMNMNM to step up and deliver. I, SNMNMNM, promise to put out a new cd by the end of the year. I, SNMNMNM, promise to tour everywhere possible to get the new cd's in the hands of the ones we love. Keep checking back here and at our myspace for updates of our love. Happy Valentines Day!

February 2nd at the Cave
Seamus had a great idea to play all the songs off of Power Pack Horse Crunch at the Cave on February 2nd. We're trying to think up exciting ways to spruce up our live show for our friends and fans that have seen us so many times. This is going to be a great chance to hear some old songs that we don't play very often and a chance for us to remember how to play them. Hope to see you there.
