This year, for the first time in like 16 years, I toyed with the idea of skipping my annual top 10 list. Overall, it was a rather lackluster year for metal, but there were a few very bright spots that deserved mention. We lost a few great musicians, unfortunately, again, but yet we carry on...

Here they are in reverse order...

10)DEVIN TOWNSEND - "Ziltoid: The Omniscient"
This is far from Devin's most creative work. Very far actually. However, he brings back the epic comedy that made his PUNKY BRUSSTER album so great. "Ziltoid..." was a fun tale about an alien's quest for the perfect cup of coffee. I can appreciate that concept.

9)ANAL CUNT - "Defenders Of The Hate"
They are back with even better song titles. Don't believe me? Look them up, or somebody post them as a comment. A.C. has finally released an album with really good production as well (by their standards, anyway). A far better listen than "It Just Gets Worse" (their 1999 release and last full length).

8)MANOWAR - "Gods Of War"
Manowar is God. Now that that is out of the way... This is far from the best Manowar has to offer, but still a very solid CD. Many fars were turned off by the fact that the band experimented a little bit on this album by adding orchestral elements. I feel, however, that it added a certain depth. There are still the very epic, bombastic tunes than we fans have come to expect, along with a few cheesy songs that we diehards appreciate. I would still pay $200 to see Manowar live...(hopefully that day will come)

7)THERION - "Gothic Kaballah"
For the early part of the year, this was the best that 2007 had to offer in my opinion. Therion is ever amorphous in their style and sound. This may be their best since "Theli" to my ears. They've included songs that borderline on great hard rock to go along with their metal symphony. A double CD is a lot to digest in one setting, but if you've got nothing better to do...

6)MATRIARCH - "Revered Unto The Ages"
This album will be in many people's top 10 list because they are some fine Puerto Rican beauties, but don't let that quality deny you of the insane metal these girls deliever. Guitarist/operatic vocallist Vanessa is a rare talent that may eventually get cherry picked (no sexual innuendo intended) but a more established band. Check out their myspace page if you are into girls who play brutal.

5)AFTER DEATH - "Retronomicon"
If you miss Nocturnus and you love Arcturus' style of spacy extreme metal, then After Death is your cup of  tea. For the uninitiated, Mike Browning, formerly of Nocturnus, is the man behind Tampa's After Death, and the seem to have recovered the ball that was fumbled by Nocturnus after their break up. Very deep and introspective, musicaly speaking, this is metal for the darkest of nights.

4)CANDLEMASS - "King Of The Grey Islands"
I am/was a huge fan of Messiah Marcolin. Now I wonder why. After he left, again, and was replaced by vocalist Rob Lowe (of Solitude Aeturnus fame), the band sounds fresher and better than ever. Lowe adds that element that the band always needed.

3)OBITUARY - "Xecutioner's Return"
Wow!!! This is what death metal is all about! Obituary returned this year with a monumental step up from 2005's "Frozen In Time". The key new element... Ralph freakin' Santolla on lead guitar. His style is certainly different from the work he did on Iced Earth and Deicide albums. In fact, his style is reflective of Chuck Schuldiner on this one. So, imagine Chuck playing lead for a recharged Obituary, and this is what you get!

2)KING DIAMOND - "Give Me Your Soul...Please"
Ive always respected and admired the King's work, but have never been a diehard. This album is special though. Very creative and haunting. The old man still has it. As usual, the album is a story that must be taken in sequence. These are his best musical arrangements possibly ever for his namesake band. Possibly even including his work in Mercyful Fate.

1)BIRDFLESH - "Mongo Musicale"
Squawk!!!!!!!!!!! This is what metal is all about. This is the album that might eventually crack my all-time top 10! So many directions. I know this band would be great to see live. These coffinfuckers have brought a breath of much needed fresh air to the grindcore scene. Hide your cats. Hide your kids. These freaks are on a rampage!

Death Metal....What Is Your Opinion Of This Music???

***This essay is a shout out to all my friends, whether or not you even like death metal. Leave a comment anyway and discuss what you don't get about it, because like all things, this music is definitely not for everyone. For those that do like it, feel free to leave as many comments with personal stories, album recommendations, pictures, etc. relating to the subject at hand***

So, why is it that some of us in our 30's and 40's have not 'outgrown' this loud, abrasive music that captivated us during the course of our confusing teen years?? What does this music offer to adults, anyway??? What is the fucking appeal?

On the surface, no doubt, death metal would strike most people as noisy nonsense. However, to those of us drawn deeper within, there are certain appeals at different levels I suppose. I like the intellectual aspect of the complex composition as well as the aggression and energy that lies in the music. People may stereotype practitioners and fans of this artform as barbaric neanderthals, or just ornery kids, but I disagree. Most metalheads I've met are actually among the more intelligent people I've ever met. And, anyone will tell you that I'm a very passive person, not one to actually go worship Satan or commit brutal acts upon unsuspecting victims. Maybe this music acts as my catharsis for any negative energy I may accrue in a given day. Hey, it's far better to handle it this way than to be one of those angry types who listen to soft music and then wanna kick your ass.

My favorite band of all time is DEATH (with the band MANOWAR being a close second). Their founder, guitarist, lead vocalist, main composer Chuck Schuldiner was an idol to me. Musically, he could do no wrong. Unfortunately, his life ended way too soon. Many of the younger metal kids revere him, but unfortunately they never got to experience the pleasure of anticipating a new album from that band. "Symbolic" was the band's sixth album and my favorite album of all time (With Pestilence's "Testimony Of The Ancients" being a close second). Their albums were not only perfect, but they led the charge and progression within the genre as a whole. Their were many bands inspired by DEATH, but they never rested on their laurels, and moved forward with every album. The aforementioned PESTILENCE was also a band that progressed with every new release. These two bands were not interested in a signature sound or style (such as bands like Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, etc., respectfully).

Early on, the bands usually maintained certain lyrical themes, mainly dealing with death and dying, and of course their perspectives of the hereafter. Some bands used Satanic imagery (Deicide, Incantation, etc.), others obsessed about gore (Cannibal Corpse, Broken Hope, etc.). Some bands took a decidedly intellectual approach to their morbidity (Carcass, etc.), while others revelled in timeless mythological tales (Amorphis, Morbid Angel). There were those who heralded battle themes (Bolt Thrower, Unleashed, etc.) and those who educated us on the twisted minset of serial killers (Macabre, etc.). This only briefly covers it from a lyrical perspective.
(Oh, and before any of you noobs tell me that "but Amorphis isn't a def meddle band...", well, I remember when they were...)

Musically, any long dead composer would marvel at the ability exemplified by the upper echelon guitarists and drummers in this genre. The level of intensity and skill on display is incredible. Even if the vocal style is not your cup of tea, you have to at least respect the quality of the musicianship (whether or not you appreciate the sounds such instruments make.)

I recommend (as a.a starting point for some, b.a reflection of the past for some, and c.a continuation of your awesome music tastes for the rest) the classic compilation CD "Death...Is Just The Beginning II". This album may be the best assembly of death metal songs to ever grace one release.

So, why was this stuff 'just a phase' for some people and a lifelong addiction to others?? Why do you listen to death metal?? What do you get out of it?? What do you recommend for the uninitiated?? Top 15 Albums Of 2006!

Hey guys, this is my list of the top 15 albums of this past year. This list is much more eclectic than usual. Give me feedback on my picks, tell me how badly I missed the mark, tell me your favorite CDs of this year, etc. I love these lists as you well know!

Here they are:

15.MASTERY- "Lethal Legacy"- Unbridled old-school thrash metal with NO vocals. Turn back the clock, folks, it's revival time!! A true headbanger's delight!

14.BLOOD FREAK- "Live Fast, Die Young...And Leave A Flesh-Eating Corpse"- A fun album from one of Razorback's better bands. A ball of energy that doesn't let up until the very end. Grind your skull!

13.PRAXIS- "Sacrifist"- Great avant-garde music from one of the great assemblages of talent ever on one CD. John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Blind Idiot God, Mick Harris and many more contribute to this collaboration.

12.INCANTATION- "Primordial Domination"- This is NOT what music sounds like in Hell. Rather, this is what Hell sounds like when all the music is turned off. Another thick, brutal slab of death metal blasphemy!

11.EDGUY- "Rocket Ride"- One of the most fun bands in the entire metal spectrum. They remind us to take it light and have a great fuckin' time. Metal with a rock n' roll ethos!

10.IMPALED NAZARENE- "Pro Patria Finlandia"- The 'Slut' and his crew give us another dosage of high intensity no frills blackened death metal. Nothing fancy, but nothing trite, no bark, all bite!

9.PEEPING TOM- Perhaps the most sonically accessible project Mike Patton has done. This is music that he says he would like to hear when he turns on FM radio. Don't let all of that fool you though, this album is pretty deep.

8.AMOEBIC DYSENTERY- "Hospice Orgy"- Easily the best grind album of the year. They add a few tricks to go with their high impact grindcore. Also some of the best samples ever. They also have a full sized coloring book available. Be warned!

7.STRAPPING YOUNG LAD- "The New Black"- SYL's best album since "City". 'The New Black' is aurally accessible, yet still full of all the quirks and nuances that made their first two albums incredible. The clincher: Finally a studio version of "Far Beyond Metal"!!!

6.LORDI- "The Arockalypse"- Finally a band brings back the balls to rock! This album is FULL of rock n' roll anthem type material. Europe's answer to GWAR, only better!

5.HANK WILLIAMS III- "Straight To Hell"- The best country album to come out since the 70's. THIS is what a country album should feel and sound like, not that over-produced, watered down pathetic drivel coming out of Nashville these past 20 years. If you are a fan of real country music, you need to check this out.

4.DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND- "Synchestra"- An album that is defined by it's great atmospheric quality and musical artistry. Devin has never been afraid to push experimental boundaries, but unlike some of his other forays, this is not jumbled. It flows very well.

3.DEICIDE- "The Stench Of Redemption"- I had permanently given up on Deicide, but this one came out of left field and kicked my ass. Their best since "Serpents Of The Light"! Ralph Santolla's great guitar soloing adds a new wrinkle to Satan's favorite soldiers.

2.JEFF WALKER UND DIE FLUFFERS- "Welcome To Carcass Cuntry"- Jeff Walker of Carcass fame, and several of his other metal friends take a stab at doing 'metal-ish' covers of old country songs. Many will mistakenly write this off as just a novelty act, but fuck 'em...this is fucking brilliant!!!

1.GHOUL- "Splatterthrash"- Bang your heeeaaaaddddd!!!! Recycled to perfection 80's thrash riffs mix with (later-)Carcass worship to give us the best album of the year. Tales of horror and gore that will inspire even the coldest hearted zombies to raise their fists to the sky. Ghoul has managed to improve with every album, may that trend continue!!!!

So I'm in the unfinished half of the basement during band practice, doin' my thing, tunneling through all the junk (and man, there is SCHLOADS of junk in the basement!), MINDING MY BUSINESS while they rehearse, right? Suddenly I realize I'm being watched like a fucking criminal. At first I'm like "what the fuck?" but then I try to brush it off, you know? I'm huntin' and doin' my thing, and that's a hell of a lot more fun than worryin' about why the fuck people are starin' at me. Plus it's like, hey, I got a cool soundtrack to hunt to, right? Live music, just for me. You can't beat that. So anyway, I'm trying to do my thing and ignore the fact that I'm being watched, when suddenly I get scooped off of my fucking feet from behind. And I'm like, "WHAT THE FUCK?"  And you know what those fuckers did? THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS KICKED MY ASS OUTTA MY OWN FUCKING BASEMENT!!! Outta MY OWN fucking basement!!! Can you BELIEVE that shit?  They gave me this sob story about "we don't want da wittle kitty to get lost in all da junk..." That's EXACTLY what the fuck I'm tryin' to DO, fools!!! There's GOLD in that thar junk, are you gettin' me? Can you fucking IMAGINE how many spiders there are amidst the fucking boxes and furniture down there?!?!?! And CENTIPEDES!!!! A walking fucking smorgasbord!!!! And fuck, who knows, I could get REAL lucky and find a mouse or something!!! You MOTHERFUCKERS!!!! They kicked my ass outta my own fucking basement, because ONCE AGAIN, the "poor wittle kitty" can't take care of itself. But you know what? You'd better BELIEVE they let the fucking DOG in there. Sunday, October 29, 2006   the best Dio salute you will read all week From the plethora of projects in his humble beginnings (Vegas Kings, anyone?) to his Sabbath days, from the era of classic Rainbow to his own band Dio, the legendary name and distinctive vocal stylings of Ronnie James Dio are universally reknowned. Weighing in at an impressive 35 lbs and being all of 2 feet tall, the elfin and iconic RJD has managed to leave a lasting impression on the world of metal since its early days. (experts say this can be removed with certain chemical solvents) His contributions to music should be appreciated and recognized by adding elements of Dio into other areas of our culture, so that our society may be equally enriched as a whole. And yes, as you may have guessed, although I do like Dio, I am only using this so-called salute as a flimsy vehicle to get a bunch of bad puns out of my system where they have been accumulating. Hey, I just gotta be me. So without any further ado, (a-Dio?) here are some of my humble suggestions on the matter... 1. Our cowboy friends should revise their training, so as to be better prepared to compete in the Ro-Dio, because riding mere bulls is for sissies. In THIS rockin' rodeo, you ride the tiger, my friends... 2. the DioLorean - You're a slacker, McFly. Go back to the future of metal in style with this rockin' ride, and you too can speed at night. (alright) 3. It's high time we began to celebrate Cinco Dio Mayo instead of the usual old Mexican holiday. So, to the rocker who's shorter from our brothers south of the border: El Tributo de magnifico, now throw up those goato hornos, muchachos. 4. Do you smell like you've been down too long in the midnight sea? For maximum underarm heavy-metal freshness, try new Diodorant. Comes in Ocean Surf, Active Sport, or Dream Evil. 5. In this reprise of the classic original, Dr. Dio-little is seen speaking to cows. "You'll know for the first time, if you're evil or bovine" (cue boos & moos in 3...2...1...) 6. Bruce Willis is NOT the star of the new action trilogy Dio Hard, but I think you & I both know who is... 7. Bringing your child up 'metal' is your duty as a responsible parent, so plunk that kid down in front of the television set, and let Junior watch an hour or more of cartoons on Nickelo-Dio 8. Countless fans of the Star Wars movies threatened to freeze me in carbonite if I went ahead with my R2-Dio-2 joke, so I won't be elaborating on that one. Sorry. 9. Republicans are outraged at the new political platform adopted by the Dio-cratic party. Next election day, vote "horns up" on Proposition 666. 10. Try not to squeal like a pig, city boy, when watching Dio-liverance Of course it only goes (further) downhill from here, so I'll quit while I'm behind.
