OUT NOW: YRE-009 Patrice Scott vs Andy Vaz - Split EP / 12"

PATRICE SCOTT VS. ANDY VAZ

SPLIT EP/ 12" / YORE-009

Yore returns with a true Dream Team Split EP, pairing Yore label head Andy Vaz with Sistrum manager Patrice Scott. Vaz is up first with a beautiful slice of old-school funk and soul within a Deep house formula, "Back to Square One," that has a whole lot more in common with Isaac Hayes and James Brown than with Juan Atkins or any other Techno Icon. Accompanied by a wah-wah guitar figure and claps, a bullet-proof bass line leads a nine-minute charge that's quickly bolstered by a slinkily swinging drum groove. Creamy synth chords and blazing horns intermittently spill over the pulsating mix and then vanish, leaving space for the rhythm to intensify and the track to grow ever more euphoric (and even, towards its close, a bit acidy). A true mission into both Funk and House, which again showcases Vaz's ultimate diversity as an outstanding Producer. Scott titled his second Sistrum release Beyond Deep and the title might just as easily apply to the B-side "Aztecal" where the ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />..:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />Detroit producer slathers shimmering stabs and congealing streams over a thudding kick drum and flickering percussive detail. While Vaz's cut draws inspiration from the timeless traditions of decades past, Scott's looks towards the future when it's gleaming shuttle lifts off in pursuit of distant galaxies.  ..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />..:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

Certainly the title of Vaz's latest Persistencebit 12-inch suggests the close of one chapter and the start of another- the end of the experimental edged Sound Variation series and the start of bringing back the old school feel, which here is closest referred to as house - Vaz's undeniable first true love. But regardless of one's titular interpretation, Endings & Beginnings' tracks are undeniably three of Vaz's freshest and most rocking ones to date. "Endings & Beginnings (Your Mix)" kicks off the set with a boisterous, Motown-inflected bass line and swishing hi-hats that rapidly settle into a driving funk groove. Vaz builds tension by recycling a circular melody until it becomes a hypnotic mantra and by dropping out the groove at key moments and then building it back up again even more forcefully. The track's an energized and multi-flavoured mix of funk, house, and soul that finds Vaz in an extroverted mood. Equally relentless, "Two in One Solution" casts its propulsive gaze upon Chicago and Detroit house styles, with Vaz again exploiting drop-outs and sweetening the groove with creamy synth streams during the tune's eight-minute bounce. The B-side's entirely devoted to a ten-minute rendering of "Endings & Beginnings (My Mix)" that's slightly slower and a little looser than the original but equally funky. The tune retains its bass-heavy, peacock strut as Vaz explores various pathways, reviving the theme here and layering jazzy keyboard burble there.

I am on something like a roll at the moment. The dust has barely settled on the Persistencebit EPs Lost & Recovered Data and First Aid Remixes (by Jan Jelinek, Anthony Shake Shakir, Mapstation, and Krikor no less) and here is already another sterling trio of cuts ready to go. "Way Back When" sweetens the deal by arriving in a nothing less than a transparent vinyl pressing housed within a special spot-varnished sleeve. The new EP presents a slightly different persona than the one heard on the EPs and the full-length Repetitive Moments Last Forever. Whereas those releases showcase a mercurial, future-groove style, the latest material invokes the classic sounds of Detroit techno and Chicago house while also directing its gaze firmly towards tomorrow. That's nowhere more evident than on the A side's "Day Light Savings" where a glimmering keyboard pattern's sunny vibe sets the stage for an old-school stomp to gradually emerge from the shadows. Over the course of its seven minutes, the tune shifts from classic techno to a free-flowing mode closer in spirit to my current approach. Also representative of that current style, the B side's propulsive shape-shifter "Walking Up My Alley" gathers steam as reverberant chiming chords twist into oblique configurations, the path ahead illuminated by handclaps and a buoyant pulse. At disc's close, presenting the jazz-funk strut of the house-flavoured "Way Back When" into an infectiously swinging groovier before battering it into shape with an incessant stream of syncopated percussive accents.

VAZBIT-012 in the media

Claude Van Stroke/Dirty Bird: "B1: way back when – This track is very cool. It reminds me of Nights of the Jaguar. Very nice. I wish it developed a bit more but I really like it and will play it."

Bleed ***** "

Laurent Garnier: "the definite label to travel between Detroit and Chicago ..... You can't go wrong with that . Funky as allways Full support of course ."

Raveline (GER): "Rating: *****"

NET RELEASE: mnlv 07 - Background Records net-release

Various - Background Records (mp3)
release date . July 19, 2006

download free exclsuive mp3 tracks by Andy Vaz feat. N. Gratin, dB, Antiguo Automata Mexicano, Dave Miller, Terrence Dixon, Frivolous.

http://www.minlove.net/archives/2006/07/mnlv_07_various_background_rec.php

Almost one year after minlove's first showcase we are proud to announce the 7th netrelease that aims to give an insight into the patient work of one of the most eclectic and prolific labels out there. Andy Vaz - head behind Background Records followed our invitation to present the labels vision and it's highly unique sound aesthetic that is deeply rooted in the early Motor City sound and perfectly placed into a modern and state-of-the-art electronic music context.

Daniel Bemberger, truly one of the most talented producers out there and well known for his releases on Background and Karloff, opens up this marvellous complilation delivering a fabulous anthem of this unmistakingly emotional intensity and deepness he's best known for. Andy Vaz and N. Gratin aka. Jan Jelinek are following with a kicking midtempo piece, combining funked-up retro-house elements with more digital and abstract concepts in a truly playful and lightweight manner.
Mexico based Ángel Sánchez Borges aka. Antiguo Autómata Mexicano delights with a lush and dense blend of glitchy hisses and nimble-footed percussive structures, overlaid by a blissful and multifaceted ambience. Dave Miller's Broken Fun, Now Fixed is an excerpt taken from a live set he played at Club Module in Tokyo this year and showcases ones again his quirky talents while delivering a heady cocktail of textured melodies, sophisticated sounddesign and deft ease. Terrence Dixon's dark alsmost obscure Ivory Coast seems to reflect a new direction or trend in his sound, combining hissing hat and snare patterns with modulated synth sounds underlayed with endless repeating drum and percussion structures of compelling intensity.
Frivolous' remarkable almost uncompromising closing track rounds up the release in a slightly ironic, yet perfect way while melting beautifully crafted sax instrumentals with foundsounds and a catchy groove.
