The Box and Donnie Darko Tooo
Over the last couple of days, a few people have asked me what's up with "this Donnie Darko sequel."
So to set the record straight, here's a few facts I'd like to share with you all - I haven't read this script. I have absolutely no involvement with this production, nor will I ever be involved.
I have no control over the rights from our original film, and neither I nor my producing partner Sean McKittrick stand to make any money from this film.
Now . . . I will leave you with some good news!
The last few months have been an amazing time for us on the editing of The Box.
We're starting to work with a very famous band who is honoring us with being the first fillmmakers they've ever scored a film with.
Hopefully there will be an announcement soon about who it is!
Keep the faith,
RK

Editing
Current mood: working
Hey everyone... we are busy editing The Box here in Los Angeles. Everything is going great...
I wanted to post a link to a great behind-the-scenes segment produced by our friends at NASA on location at Langley, profiling our last week of filming. In the footage you will see brief glimpses of some of the (very large) sets constructed for the film in the large-scale wind tunnel, which has never been used in a motion-picture... until now!
Here is the link to THIS WEEK AT NASA:

And here is a link to an article about the historic wind tunnel, when it was officially de-commissioned in 1995:
http://www.nasa.gov/centers/langley/news/releases/1995/Oct95/95_101.html
Also... I wanted to post the official synopsis of the film, as there has been some inaccurate stuff circulating out there:
Based on the short story by Richard Matheson, "The Box" stars Cameron Diaz as Norma Lewis and James Marsden as Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child who receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger, played by Frank Langella, delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world...someone they don't know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the crosshairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity.
Also... the Southland Tales DVD comes out March 18th... and The Prequel Saga graphic novel is available at bookstores and on Amazon.com. Hopefully everyone who didn't get to see it in theaters will get their chance soon!
As for bonus features, there is a cool 30 minute documentary and an animated short film on the disc. I didn't have time to record a commentary... but I'm sure there will be a much more elaborate multi-disc release down the road... when we have more time to compile the massive amount of supplemental material related to the film, assemble a longer version, etc. No word yet on a date for the Blu-Ray disc.
More soon...

THAT’S A WRAP
Current mood: working
Hello everyone... I haven't blogged in a long time because, well... I've been in Boston/Virginia directing my third movie!
And now I am back in LA and we have officially wrapped production on The Box.
It was an amazing experience working with Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella and the entire supporting cast and crew. My editors have been working non-stop, and we are beginning to work on the visual effects, signing a composer, etc.
As soon as Warner Bros. gives us a release date I will let you know...
In the meantime... the DVD for Southland Tales comes out March 18th.
And here is a cool article from our great friends at NASA.

Soundtrack and other tales.....
Hi Guys, I'm currently tucked away in Boston for the final stages of pre-production on THE BOX. We start shooting in a couple weeks, and I will keep you updated throughout the production. Thanks to everyone who came out to the Southland Tales premiere during AFI at the Arclight Hollywood this weekend. Good news for those in the LA area, as we received word today that Southland Tales will play at the Arclight starting on November 14th. One last thing, our good friends at Milan Records are releasing the Southland Tales soundtrack tomorrow in physical and digital formats, on all platforms. It should be available at your local record store, along with iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody.......etc... More to come! Best,
