RADIO SIX SHOW THIS WEEK - A Bday Party 4 Me :)
Current mood: enthralled
Category: Music
So I am trying to find some great songs for a party on the radio....A random mix of birthday songs, party songs, celebration songs. It needs to be a real FEEL GOOD time.
A contender right now is Stephen Duffy (aka Tin Tin) with "Icing on the Cake". Oh what a gem this was eh? What fun! Classic.
What other songs should I have? I can play pretty much anything now...except EMI stuff so that widens my scope immensely!
There are a number of tracks I'd like but don't think I have.
So for all the fellow crabs out there - HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU too!
I've had a song running in my head the past few days. One of my faves ever from Jason Mraz.
Jason's a sweet heart of a guy who's super popular stateside but not really broken in the UK (yet).
When he came to do a session for me at Q96 - he was kind enough to do a few tracks and he even sang a little to my niece Jessica for her birthday. I thought that was a pretty personal message for her birthday that year and have never managed anything as cool since (bad auntie). At any rate - I stumbled across a rough and tumble video of it on YouTube from a coffee shop.
Funny how when you're down - music takes on so much more intensity, isn't it?
This track is emotive for me. When he came in, he asked what I wanted to hear - and I said "Absolutely Zero" and he obliged. I asked him if any other DJ had ever requested that one and he said "no" which surprised me more than a little.
There was something so wonderful about sitting there alone in the studio as this guy played this song I loved so much. It was heavenly, I have to say. Days like that - are what I miss most. Not just being up close in a confined space with a hot musician but being privvy to such an intimate serenade almost.
Heavenly. Took a lot of pictures of him that day as you can imagine!
The biggest bummer for me today is that I just noticed Jason was in Glasgow last week and I bloomin' missed it. Dontchajusthatewhenthathappens?
Well I am off to depress myself even more with musical ditties.
It's hard to choose from now that my CDs are all lovely and organized to my right. Doesn't the world feel better when organized? Or is it just me who thinks that? If only the rest of the flat was as tidy as this corner is here... Oh well that's my goal for July.

MUSIC CAN MOVE YOU
Isn't it strange how music can make you so elated or so melancholy? Is there anything else so powerful? How a few simple words can turn your whole mood around - one way or the other? Or how it takes on so much more meaning when you're feeling heart broken? Like every song speaks to just you. It resonates deep inside?
My friend Fiona mailed me four links for Damien Rice this morning. Damien sure can pen a lovely tune. So emotive. So painstakingly honest. It's a gift I wish I had...the power to move people through words.

Ive also been spinning the new COLDPLAY a fair bit. I like it. Maybe it's not "cool" to admit liking Coldplay but I do. Always have and most likely always will.
LAST WEEK'S GIGS
Managed to catch Hercules Mandarin and Matt Costa at King Tuts. Was some pretty awesome music. Love Matt and really love his new video which is filmed in San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Capitola - from what I can see.

Makes me more than a little homesick ,I have to say. But then, how could I not be craving the sunny weather when it's been gloomy for 2 week's solid (just about).
This week - hoping to check out the BLUE NILE in concert. I can't believe I've never seen them live. Fun stuff all around.
So there you go, that's today's music update. I think I'll do this more often. Watch this space.
