Nov. 28, 1995 The star of the show wasn't at the top of the big dark tree. It was "Whiskers One" -- and the very special passenger it carried. Twice the holiday helicopter orbited a throng of more than 3,000 children and adults gathered on the Fort Stanwix lawn for the official lighting of the city's Christmas tree.

Free parking in the Liberty-George garage and other downtown locations will end Monday as the Common Council, in a Thanksgiving Eve meeting, refused to pull the rug from under the Rome Parking Authority by overruling its announced parking regulations. Merchants had sought free parking through Christmas, fearing that the intended validation system would scare shoppers away.

The Rome Planning Board has received recommendations that residential construction be sharply restricted in an area ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 feet in width and extending from the proposed new Griffiss Air Force Base two and a quarter-mile runway to the City of Rome line. The recommendation, designed to avoid loss of life in case of aircraft accidents in the approach and takeoff zones, is made by John W. Reps, Ithaca, city planning consultant.
