On Sunday, April 20 I have the very special pleasure to share an evening with one of my all time heroes, Mr. Paul Lovens for the final day of the MY FAVOURITE THING festival at Radialsystem V, Berlin Mitte. Sharing the bill is David Moss, another drumming legend and chanteur extraordinaire.
I will perform phase II of VIRGINALS featuring Alvin Luciers ’Music With Magnetic Strings’ in a version for eBowed Ottavino Virginal and the premiere of my version of Francisco Lopez ’UNTITLED 92’, performed on a set of picnic-gramophones and dubplates.
For your entertainment I will also bring a selection of pre-war hula, early doo-wop, hillbilly and other treasures at 78RPM.
I will perform Alvin Luciers 'Music With Magnetic Strings' and later on a hand-cranked DJset with early folk recordings from the Alan Lomax archive, hula, doo-wop and hillbilly on 78RPM records.
On FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 08 I will play another surprise (to me!!) concert in my dear hometown of Saarbruecken, this time by invitation of the great Textile label. I will support Datashock to celebrate the release of their first recording for this Paris based edition of Oren Ambarchi, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Jackie-o-Motherfucker, Volcano the Bear, &c fame.
For this occasion I will perform a preview of VIRGINALS, one of my upcoming live concepts in shape of a recital. VIRGINALS is a tribute to some of my favourite contemporary composers, featuring a series of live interpretations of pieces performed on the Ottavino Virginal, a Renaissance keyboard instrument.
VIRGINALS is a computer-free zone.
I will play Alvin Luciers 'Music With Magnetic Strings', a truely mesmerizing beauty, originally written for eBowed piano.
Apart from that, I will also frame the evening with a selection of pre-war hula, gospel, early doo-wop and other treasures at 78RPM.
There will be several news from my side very soon, please subscribe here if you are interested in upcoming releases and shows ( ...not just in my hometown).

185 Minute Version Original Musical Director - Aleksander Kolkowski Produced by Marek Pytel
<< Taking inspiration from Krzysztof Penderecki's original film score, exuberant interpretations of Baroque and early Classical music will be projected by ornate horns from a wonderful array of antique wind-up gramophones, wax cylinder phonographs and rare horned string instruments. Sound effects and noises will also be reproduced on gramophones utilizing Aleks Kolkowski's unique library of recorded sound from the early 1900s. Several leading lights from contemporary and experimental music scenes world-wide are featured here in a programme that includes electronic music played live by Zbigniew Karkowski and Stephan Mathieu, both cutting edge exponents of the genre. >>
Capacities at Sparte4 are limited and the venue usually sells out quickly, so please drop them a note and make a reservation (see ">> karten reservieren") if you're planning to come along.
"Airport Symphony, commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival and Brisbane Airport Corporation, documents and synthesises the experiences of travel. Each piece represents a personal meditation on aspects of travel in the modern age and suggests ways in which we control, augment and ultimately exists in a time where almost no part of the face of the planet is inaccessible. Each of the pieces features a source recording made in and around Brisbane Airport between March and June 2007 –in a raw form or transformed by processing."
Please visit Room40.org for more infos on that project or buy a copy of Airport Symphony.

I contributed LUX-SCN, a piece of 23.45 minutes duration which equals the ideal duration of a flight from Luxemburg Airport to my hometown. Actually I never took this flight although traveling from Luxemburg quiet frequently, so LUX-SCN is a portrait of an imaginary travel. The piece is based on Lawrence Englishs recordings made at Brisbane Airport, filtered with shortwave radio.
On Saturday, June 09. 2007 I'll play my first concert in over 6 years in my hometown Saarbrücken.
My homies Henkubiks have invited me to join them for a live set in a quiet beautiful 20th century furniture storage.

1000 friends, almost 14000 hits on my blog, many nice contacts and actually one real-life cooperation grown on the mySpace compost later...
...here are some words (in broken english) and images from my so far action packed month -
I'd started my series of five concerts performing at Sonic Recycler3 in London in the first week of May. Thanks to Douglas and Iris of Sprawl and the other performers for making this a memorable event! Here are some photos of my walk to Watermans Center -

While in town, I visited my friend Aleksander Kolkowski, a London based composer and collector of historical recording devices and horned string instruments to do some face-to-face work on a mutual project that we are planning to premier in Spring 2008. Our yet untitled composition will be a concert for string quartet, phonographs, gramophones, a homemade 15-channel fullrange loudspeaker system and autogenerative realtime processing. To say the very least, it was more than exciting to spend a while in Aleks' studio and finally meet his instruments in person...

Next stop was La Triennale di Milano, where Claudio Sinatti and I performed Part One of our Carillion Sessions in an extraordinary space (well, my photos certainly won't do any justice) of almost churchlike dimensions and reverb, packed with people, a 7:2 surround system and a large tryptich of video screens. What more could we have asked for?! Hope to see you when we play in Florence on June 7th!
In the morning of our performances day I visited Fondazione Prada to see a solo exhibition by one of my favourite contemporary artists (and favourite one-time cooperators) Tobias Rehberger. To keep it brief, his piece On Otto is one of the most uplifting, inspiring, enchanting things I'd seen so far, a movie (starring Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito, Willem Dafoe, Justin Henry and Emmy Rossum, sound design by Randy Thom and a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone) presented as a reversed making of, in the shape of 4 pavillions... The piece is on until June 6, so don't miss this if you happen to be somewhere near Milano.
My favourite souvenir from Milan is based on a similar subject, another take on reality and perception of time, Alessandro Bosettis CD Exposé on the outstanding Milanese Die Schachtel label. An instant favourite I'd say, played nonstop since I have it. Please check yourself!

On my recent posting regarding my rework for Pedro Carneiros "Improbable Transgressions" doubleCD , I wanted to share a photo of a further transformation of that, um, material, as found on my desktop the next morning -
- the first proper remix by Richard "Ringo" Mathieu...

My Radioland CD is finished!

And special note to this blog's subscribers, in the next couple of days I will try to reorganize my former postings which became all screwed up a while ago. So, if you'll receive several posts again, please ignore them.
I hope this finds You all well,
thanks for your time, support and for being friends* - Stephan
