How To Clean A Tanning Bed
Current mood: productive
Category: Fashion, Style, Shopping

Greetings From Sunco!
Today: How To Clean And Maintain A Tanning Bed

Summertime!
Oh. My. Gosh. Can you believe it's here? It's Summer! The reason you've been going to the salon or spending hours of time in your own tanning bed to get the look you want when you step onto the beach.

That's why there's never been a better time to talk about cleaning your tanning bed. You've been wearing it out. Day in and day out. But what have you done in terms of maintenance and cleaning? What are you supposed to do? Your poor tanning bed has been sitting there giving you hours of service and what thanks does it get? Shame on you. Break out the cleaner and get to work!

First Things First - The Buck Booster
Since we're on the subject, just for kicks and giggles, I'm going to mention the "buck booster" here. Performance of your tanning bed certainly depends on cleanliness, but no matter how clean it is, you won't get the performance you want and may even damage the electrical components if the electricity going to your tanning bed isn't just right, or is improperly wired.

A lot of people don't even know what a buck booster is or why they need it. In short, it regulates the voltage to your tanning bed. Your tanning bed is a sensitive conglomeration of electronic equipment and if it doesn't get the proper voltage, the performance suffers and so does your tanning experience. It is roughly the size of half a cinder block and is usually just placed behind the tanning bed. It is wired into your wall and then you plug your tanning bed into the buck booster. (Higher end beds are "hard wired", meaning there is no plug - everything must be physically wired together by a qualified electrician.)

So then, a buck booster will either "buck" (decrease the voltage) or "boost" (increase the voltage) so that your equipment operates properly and lasts longer. You should have an electrician check your voltage for you so you can then pass this information on to Sunco, so we can then make a proper recommendation on the necessary buck booster for your location. (Buck boosters come in various amperages depending on what you need.) Hopefully, this is something that you looked into when you first purchased a tanning bed. A buck booster requires no maintenance.

How To Clean A Tanning Bed
Having mentioned the electrical setup, the cleanliness of a tanning bed can also dramatically affect performance. The outer shell won't affect performance so much as long as it's not extremely dusty. (Keeping the outer shell clean helps boost confidence of customers if you're a salon owner, by the way.)

Some tanning beds have a plastic outer shell, some are metal. These surfaces can be cleaned with a wide variety of products, like common vinyl cleaner/protectors for plastic and even car polish for metal surfaces. In other words, the outer surface is pretty durable with the exception that you may want to keep tanning beds with plastic outer shells out of direct sunlight to prevent discoloration or even warping.

So on to the more sensitive parts. Let's start with the acrylic - the clear plastic surface you actually lie on. You may have heard of all sorts of things used to clean the acrylic. But be careful. Certain chemicals can cause a whitish, foggy-looking film to appear on the surface and even cause cracking. You paid a lot for your tanning bed. Surely you can spend a little on the proper cleaning solution.

Sunco recommends Australian Gold cleaning solution:

Safe to use on tanning equipment acrylics. This is a one-step, no-rinse, neutral pH disinfectant-cleaner. A full scale disinfectant, as well as, a cleanser, sanitizer, deodorizer, fungicide, virucide and mildewstat. It even meets requirements for hospital use.  Fresh citrus smell and appealing blue color. Available in quart and gallon containers. Can be used to disinfect eyewear. EPA approved and registered. Use after every tanning session.

Heavy Duty Acrylic Maintenance
Ok, you've got the proper cleaner and you use it often. But let's say you screwed up. Something has scratched the acrylic. Or maybe you have an older tanning bed that's just accumulated small scratches, maybe it even has foggy surface from years of use and neglect. The acrylic is a soft material that does scratch easily and the less clear it is, the less effective your tanning bed bulbs will be. But never fear. There's hope:

Sunco recommends Novus acrylic products. They come in three varieties: A cleaner, a polish, and a scratch remover.

#1 - Novus Plastic Clean and Shine - Gently cleans all plastics without scratching. Leaves a lustrous shine that resists fogging, repels dust, and eliminates static. Gives a "like new" shine that lasts. It works fast, without smearing, and without the labor associated with conventional polishes. The result is a clear smooth, greaseless shine.

#2 - Novus Fine Scratch Remover - Removes fine scratches, haziness and abrasions from most plastics. Restores faded and discolored plastics with repeated use. Restores the finish by removing the damage instead of filling it in. Buffs out quickly. Removes the damage while it seals and protects the surface with a layer of polish. The result is a deep shine that resists scratching, marking and aging. No offensive odors or toxic risks. Safe to use in high-volume industrial setting or at home.

#3 - Novus Heavy Duty Scratch Remover - Removes heavy scratches and abrasions from most acrylic surfaces. Use #3 when damage is too severe to be restored with Novus #2 polish. Be SURE to use Novus #2 for final finishing. Not recommended for use on coated plastics.

(The cool thing about these products is that you can also use them for motorcycle and helmet windshields, boats, and many other applications where there is a clear acrylic that could use some polishing.)

If your acrylic is actually cracked, well, my personal recommendation is if it is your own personal tanning bed (not in a salon), and the crack is small, just keep it clean as possible and keep using it. Of course, if it is a severe crack, you may need to go ahead and look into getting a new acrylic. Small cracks aren't going to get smaller but if it doesn't get any larger, you may be ok.

The reason I say this is because acrylics come in a huge variety of sizes depending on the model and year of your tanning bed, so you have to be quite specific when getting one or you will be in for an irritating surprise when it doesn't fit. Even a variance as little as 1/8" may prevent it from fitting. Why do manufacturers have so many different sizes? I haven't a clue.

Bulbs, Reflectors and Everything Else
Wolff tanning beds use what is called a "Quick Clip" acrylic removal system. This is basically the vinyl edging on the tanning bed that you can just pull to open then push firmly to snap it back into place. When opened, you can easily slide out the acrylic for cleaning and maintenance, as well as access the lamps and inside of the tanning bed for cleaning and maintenance.

You should clean inside the bed, including the reflectors, the lamps and both sides of the acrylic about once a year. Clean inside at least once between lamp changes, and at every lamp change. Bulbs that are clean can improve UV output by as much as 10%! Therefore, make sure you clean your bulbs and reflectors with a damp cloth on a regular basis. Do NOT use solvents!

Also, proper seating of tanning bed bulbs in their sockets is vital. Poor seating can lead to poor electrical contact between lamp and socket and can significantly shorten the life of any lamp. Minor instabilities such as "snaking" or "swirling" can sometimes be corrected by turning the tanning bulbs on and off a few times after you install them.

An old or worn out starter can dramatically shorten the life of a much more expensive lamp. Lamp starters need to be replaced only when they fail to ignite the lamps - usually around around 5 to 10 years for a home tanning bed.

Be sure to check your fans to see that they are working properly each time you clean inside. Excessive heat can reduce lamp life by half. Properly maintain fans, reflectors and acrylics in accordance to manufacturer's guidelines.

Pistons - These just hold the canopy up when you open your tanning bed. Keep the canopy in the UP position when not in use to extend the life of the pistons.

Tanning Bed Bulbs
Current mood: hot

When the time comes to change tanning bed bulbs for your bed, which kind are supposed to fit? And how can you get the most out of your bulbs?

Hopefully, this information will help:

About F71 Bi-Pin and F73 RDC

F71 and F73 tanning bed bulbs

Early tanning beds produced in the US used F73 RDC lamps operated by 2-lamp rapid start ballasts. Today the majority of tanning beds use pre-heat systems and F71 bi-pin lamps. Both are still in use however, so refer to the diagram above to determine which bulb you have.

If you need help in selecting a bulb, please do not hesitate to call Sunco for help.  866-278-1292.

To maximized lamp life and get the most from your tanning bulbs:
Be sure you are using the correct voltage. Make sure the bed's cooling system is operating correctly. Excessive heat can reduce lamp life by half. Properly maintain fans, reflectors and acrylics in accordance to manufacturer's guidelines.

Proper seating of tanning bed bulbs in their sockets is vital. Poor seating can lead to poor electrical contact between lamp and socket and can significantly shorten the life of any lamp. An old or worn out starter can dramatically shorten the life of a much more expensive lamp. Minor instabilities such as "snaking" or "swirling" can sometimes be corrected by turning the tanning bulbs on and off a few times after you install them.

Bulbs that are clean can improve UV output by as much as 10%! Therefore, make sure you clean your bulbs with a damp cloth on a regular basis. Do NOT use solvents!  Also, an old or dirty tanning bed acrylic (the clear plastic material you actually lay on) can filter out over 10% of the UVA that is trying to get through, and over 50% of the UVB that is so vital for a tan! (Sunco offers Australian Gold Cleaner for cleaning the acrylic and Novus Acrylic Polish to help remove fine scratches.)

Also, Sunco offers "The Twister:

Introducing: The TWISTER!
This innovative lamp glass design is significantly different than other lamps in the market. Not only will they provide optimum UV output, these lamps will give any bed a unique, eye catching look. The increased arc length and surface area gives extra tanning power with a phosphor coating that provides uniform tanning effectiveness throughout the length of the lamp. This results in higher and more stable tanning power levels than other brands for the highest tanning effectiveness for the desired immediate and delayed results. Made with pride in the USA. Salon owners can upgrade your existing beds with these bulbs for a brand new look at a fraction of the cost of buying an entirely new bed.

Always remember to wear protective eyewear.

Tanning Bed Maintenance
Current mood: giddy
Category: Fashion, Style, Shopping

Greetings from Sunco!

Welcome to a partly cloudy day here in Northeast Tennessee. We hope your day is bright and sunny as we continue our trek past the busy season in the tanning industry.

Tanning Bed Maintenance
So today we are going to touch briefly on tanning bed maintenance. But what's to know, right? There are few moving parts and unless something breaks, there's not much to do. Please consider the following:

Cleaning After Use
You should clean and disinfect your tanning bed
's bench and canopy after each use. (Don't forget the floors of tanning booths.) But you should be sure to use a non-abrasive disinfectant cleaner that does not contain ammonia or ammonia derivatives. Ammonia can damage the acrylic (the clear Plexiglas type shield you lay on as well as the one in the canopy.) Spray the acrylic lightly with disinfectant and wipe dry with a clean soft cloth. Sunco recommends Australian Gold's pH Neutral Disinfectant Cleaner - http://www.suncotanning.com/accessories.htm.

If you have a used tanning bed with acrylics that have become hazy or lot of scratches, you might consider Novus Acrylic Polish before replacing the acrylics. Novus Acrylic Polish comes in 3 grades: #1 gently cleans and shines, #2 removes fine scratches and haziness, and #3 removes heavy scratches. You can also find these on our Accessories Page. Please note that this polish is not for everyday use. Frequent polishing can actually shorten the life of the acrylics.

Thorough Periodic Cleaning
The cooling fans draw air through the bed and will cause a dust buildup on the lamps and reflectors over time. When a dust buildup is observed, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the inside of the bench and canopy.
1. Remove the acrylic shields and lamps
2. With a soft cloth, wipe the entire length of each lamp.
3. Clean both sides of the acrylic shields with a non-ammonia disinfectant cleaner.
4. Wipe the reflectors with a clean damp cloth
5. Re-install the lamps and acrylic shields.

Mechanical Inspection
Inspect the unit's mechanical integrity every 400 - 500 hours of use.
1. Inspect the unit's fasteners verifying that all are firmly in place. Pay particular attention to hinge bolts.
2. Inspect gas springs for signs of wear. Replace gas springs that will no longer hold the canopy in the full open position when raised.
3. Inspect the AC power cord and its connections.
4. Inspect the acrylic. Replace if broken, cracked or badly scratched.

Replacing Lamps
To be assured of maximum tanning effectiveness, change lamps after approximately 800 - 1000 hours of use. Tanning will continue after this time but at a slower rate. To ensure trouble free operation of your tanning bed
, replace the lamp starters whenever the lamps are replaced.

These steps should keep your tanning bed in good working order for years to come. Feel free to call Sunco for any specific questions you may have.

Lamp Price Lowered Again!
Current mood: indescribable

Greetings From Sunco!
Even More and MORE Sales!

Hey it's Friday, myspacers! How would you like another sale? To tell you the truth, I've been covered up and I couldn't care less - I'm ready for the weekend! But if you need bulbs for your tanning bed, you just might be interested:

Wow. Well apparently there's lots of bulbs to move so guess what - another price lowered. I've just been told to lower the price of the XS Power Plus lamps by another dollar to $9.95.

XS Power Plus Lamps, $14.95 retail are now $11.95  NOW ON SALE FOR $10.95
XS Power Plus lamps are now $9.95

Sales on lamps continue with Sunco's other lamps as well:

XS Power Lamps, $12.95 retail are now $10.95 NOW ON SALE FOR $9.95
XS Power Twister Lamps
, $14.95 retail are now NOW ON SALE FOR $11.95
Dual Tone Power Twister Lamps, $17.95 retail are now NOW ON SALE FOR $15.95
XP Lamps, $10.95 are now SOLD OUT - hey, what'd I tell ya?

A minimum of 16 bulbs are required for purchase. This is due to the packaging. Shipping less than that would allow the bulbs to bang around inside and get broken during shipment.

Tanning Bed Sales Continue
Call or email to get your lowest price on Sunco's XS Power beds. Whatever price you see there now will be even cheaper if you contact Sunco. You may also buy the beds at the price listed if, for whatever reason, you don't want to call and save some money. Now some have told me that we just increased the price, then we're selling at the price we wanted to originally. All I got to say is, request a catalog. Look in there and you will see the same prices, only on the website there's a strike through that price and Sunco tells you to call to get an even lower price. Check it out.

ALSO - Sunco continues to offer:
* A Free Triple Facial Upgrade (get the dual tone lamps at no extra cost).
* $1000 Free Ultimate Tanning Package (includes lotion and other items-call for details).
* 0% Financing.
* Free Express Shipping (you still pay shipping, but it's 1 to 3 day delivery at no extra cost).

Two last items of great interest this year include:
The XS Power Vertical Solution Tanning Booth (pretty cool looking booth with the dual twister lamps)
AND
The 24 XS Power Tanning Bed in a 110 volt configuration (normally 220V).

So there's another sale breakdown for ya. I honestly don't think the lamp prices will go much lower so if you're planning to buy, consider doing it before they're sold out. Tis the season, eh? Competition in the tanning industry means sales for you.

Anyway, it's back to work for me. Hope Sunco's sales will be of value to you and hope your busy tanning season is going great!

Tanning Lotions Update Info
Current mood: bouncy

Greetings From Sunco!
Online Tanning Lotions, Sunco's Emails, Combating Spam, and Sunco's News Feed

Online Tanning Lotions
Although our website is now updated with new images, pricing, etc.. for 2007, we are still working on all those lotions! We do carry the new Australian Gold, Swedish Beauty, Caribbean Gold, Designer Skin, California Tan, Emerald Bay, Supre, and Fiesta Sun lotions although as of this newsletter, the site doesn't reflect all of them yet.

I will make note on the main lotions page when I finish editing each brand of lotion. So if you want to order any of the new lotions that aren't up yet, just give us a call! We have a new toll-free phone number dedicated to lotion sales and information so you can get what you're after faster.

Our New Lotions Number is: 1-866-278-1292.

For now, I just finished the Australian Gold section. Now I need to edit the online store so you can purchase those online, which won't take long. And this will pretty much be the process until I'm done. In the mean time, I'm handing the other chores I have around here such as printing catalog address labels, marketing and promotion, this news feed, and email - which brings me to the next section...

Sunco's Emails (or lack thereof)
Recently there was yet another news article I read on the amount of SPAM we're all getting. The reason I am so interested is because we recently began sending out a one time mass emailing to those that requested catalogs from us last year, letting them know about our new catalog for this year. So how do you know if it's really Sunco or if it's a spammer posing as Sunco?

Well first and foremost - I'M the one responsible for sending out Sunco's emails. You think I got time for sending out tons of monthly or even weekly emails?! No! HECK no!! This is something I do once a year just to get the word out about our new catalogs. I seriously doubt I will have or take the time to send out another mass emailing for any reason.

As for the email addresses themselves, I can tell you all day long how we don't give out or sell email addresses. But the real point is - again, I just don't have the time. I use the previous year's emails but after that, your email address is history as far as I'm concerned. The list of emails from 2005 is gone. I have no more use for them. And a lot of them are probably not any good any more anyway.

So although I mention in the emails that you can reply with "REMOVE" to get off the mailing list, you're pretty much removed anyway as soon as I'm done with this mail-out. It's just a courtesy thing to let people who might think they are permanently on an email list to feel like they can get out of it. Again, you're out of it anyway when I'm done with this one mail-out. If you get any more from "us", suspect spam. While I admit it's theoretically possible we might have some reason to let our customers know via email about some "great" offer, this is highly improbable.

In other words, don't worry about what happens with your email address after it gets in my hands. It's used next year to let you know when the new catalog is out, then that's most likely it. If you don't want to give us your email address - DON'T. It's a required field in the request form, but you can just as easily put N/A or just anything. As long as there is some information in the field, you can still you submit your catalog request. Same thing for telephone number. It's there just in case you're actually interested in being contacted. If you don't want to be contacted, just type in "123" or even just "1" and move on. Don't give out information if you don't want to. (Of course we need your address to mail you the catalog =P ).

Spam Combat - How To Handle It
So what about your business? Well first off to help combat spam, it's not a great idea to display your email address on your web page. Contact information such as phone numbers and a physical address is important for customer trust but you can have them fill out a form to contact you by email. Check this site out - http://www.spampoison.com/. This is to help combat "harvesters" that visit your site, find email addresses and send you some good ole spam.

Here's an article with good information too - http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/01/spam_is_back_an.html#posts . One important point from the article: If you know an email is spam, don't open it. Some emails contain a small bit of code that is sent BACK to the spammer, effectively letting them know it's a valid email address and then?...you get even more helpings of spam. Mmmm, spam.

So you may also want to turn off the 'preview pane' in Outlook Express, for example, so that when you click a message once, it doesn't open it - that's what happens with the preview pane. By turning it off, you can click a message once to highlight it WITHOUT opening, then just delete it.

Also, make use of your email programs message filters. Usually it's listed under "TOOLS / MESSAGE FILTERS (or RULES)". Then you can specify that if a message has a certain word in the title or if it comes from a certain address, etc., it can be sent to your trash instead of your inbox.

Don't "unsubscribe" to mailing lists you didn't ask to join. If you've given out your email address to a website, you might get a message from them. If you did NOT, don't click that unsubscribe link. Again, it just verifies you have a valid email address and you keep getting spammed.

And if you wonder where that link in an email message will take you, move your mouse over it first. In the lower left corner, the entire link will be displayed. And it may be taking you somewhere other than what is indicated in the email - somewhere you don't want to go.

There's more you can do to help combat spam. But I think the most effective thing is common sense. Email jibberish or senseless subject lines or senders should just be deleted. The jibberish is only an attempt to get past your message filters.

Spam is like a salesman that has come to your door out of the blue while you're busy doing other things....(almost ANY other thing for that matter.) What the first thing you want to do? Slam the door on him. Do the same thing with emails from unknown companies. Don't even open them.

Email Habits For Your Salon or Business - How NOT to Lose Customers
So how about from the other point of view - like Sunco's, or your tanning salon or other business? What's the best way to interact with customers or potential customers online, without scaring them off? Well first off, email has become a very limited way of communicating with customers because sometimes, even legitimate emails get filtered out and sent to the trash. So they don't get your message anyway.

We don't buy email lists to blast out messages to people and neither should you. Only use the emails that your customers have chosen to give to you. That way you KNOW that 100% of the promotional emails you send out are going to people that are actually interested in your products or services.

Yes, it takes time to build a customer base in the first place. But it's pretty fruitless anyway to send out emails about your local tanning salon to someone who lives on the other side of the country and hates tanning in general. The only thing you're going to get with a purchased email list is a reputation for spamming.

And if you keep a database of current customers' email and send out emails regularly, DO give your customers the option of opting out or unsubscribing. You want people to like your company, not hate you because of your constant bothersome emails. And hopefully they will recognize you as a company with whom they have done business (otherwise how did you get their email address?). That way, although they may not want your emails, you will not have necessarily lost a potential customer. AND they won't talk about what a 'spammy' company you are to other people.

My Personal Experience
Wanna know my experience? Well here it is anyway. I've sent out a lot of emails to the list I had from last year. MOST of them came back as undeliverable, mail delivery failed, etc., and that's due to people either accidentally or purposely typing in a wrong email address, or they've since cancelled that particular email account.

Relatively few responses came back. And RARELY do I get a "REMOVE" request. That's because they know who we are - they requested a catalog from us last year! And the email message itself instructs them to either respond to the email, or check us out on their own without responding. That way they don't feel like they're getting tricked to click on a link in a spam email or like they're on a spam email list. I basically let them know they can just go to our website to check out our new catalog for themselves.

The point is, email is useful because it's free advertising and it's another avenue of getting the message out. But don't rely heavily on it or expect a huge response. Again, message filters, bad email addresses, wrong email addresses - all this results in a relatively small but certainly acceptable response.

If we sell even one tanning bed because of our one-time mass emailing, it was worth it. If we get a reputation as a "spammy" company, that's definitely NOT worth it and that's what we want to avoid at all costs. So use email sparingly and only when there is really something to report about your company, in which people who may have contacted you before and given you their email address, may be interested. (was that not a sentence and a half?)

The Sunco News Feed
But this brings me to what you are reading right now. This is the whole reason I started The Sunco News Feed. Instead of tossing emails at customers, it is up to them subscribe or unsubscribe to a news feed - no email addresses involved. (I also created this news feed to help search engine ranking but that's another story.)

But this way, customers and potential customers can feel safer about their personal information while keeping up to date on what's going on with Sunco Tanning. Not to mention, news feeds are kind of the going thing on the internet at the moment. They have been for awhile now.

News feeds are a source of timely, relevant information about a particular business or subject and offer fresh content as well - something the search engines AND your customers want to know about. In other words, if you are offering useful, helpful, informative, interesting or valuable information that people actually want to know about, you are NOT a spammer.

We don't want to 'trick' people into buying our tanning beds or tanning products by spamming or other 'black hat' methods. We want customers who WANT to buy our tanning beds, tanning bed bulbs, tanning lotions and tanning accessories because we run a reputable, trustworthy business...then tell others. And part of that is spreading the word through a news feed that people have CHOSEN to subscribe to.

Not everyone has caught onto news feeds yet but that's ok. Of the ones that have caught on, well you get to read information like what you are reading now - information that WON'T be getting sent out in any emails from Sunco. And hopefully this is information you can use to help your tanning salon and you, personally, but it's good info for just about any business that uses the internet today.

As for me, I better get back to updating those lotion pages. Hope this has been as helpful to you as it has been painful for my carpel tunnel. Have a great weekend!

New Catalogs Are Here!
Current mood: busy

Greetings From Sunco!
New Tanning Catalogs and New Tanning Booth

Catalogs for 2007
Well here we are! The start of a new year and a new tanning season. We've already seen some pick up in business. Not alot, but there's definitely more phones ringing. So the the brand new 2007 catalogs are ready! Whatcha waiting for? Make me look good and go request yours now! You may also download the PDF versions if you don't want to wait for one in the mail.

These past few months are when I see the most work. Catalog design then web design. Which is what I want to mention next...

Our website is now updated with new images, pricing, etc.. for 2007. And yes, the new tanning booth is on there. Now stop bugging me about it - haha (more info below). The last thing I need to do is update is our lotions section. We do carry the new Australian Gold, Swedish Beauty, Caribbean Gold, Designer Skin, California Tan, Emerald Bay, Supre, and Fiesta Sun lotions although the site doesn't reflect them yet. Don't worry, I'm working on it. Now get off my case! =) So if you want to order any of those, give us a call. Oh yeah, we have a new toll-free phone number dedicated to lotion sales and information so you can get what you're after faster.

Our New Lotions Number is: 1-866-278-1292.

So what else is new? How about a $1000 Ultimate Tanning Package with the purchase of a tanning bed? Sound yummy? So what's included? Well why you asking me?? I'm just the webmaster. Give Sunco a call or drop them an email and ask for details. I have no idea. I just....work....here....well sometimes.

I mean they usually offer the $500 in free lotion --->"retail value"<--- with a tanning bed purchase so this must be....twice as good? I dunno. It's the first year they began offering this. Also they're still offering the 0% financing - to qualified applicants, I'm sure.
