Hi there,

What a week! I dropped by the Prince Of Wales last Monday night to check out Spank Rock and Diplo. Well Spank Rock lite (half of them didn't make it to Australia) but it was a great show anyhow. It made me pull out that old M.I.A./Diplo mixtape and torture my work with it a few times ?

Last week was the end of a nice, relaxed Summer vibe on Symbiosis. We heard sounds from Addenda, Ben Owen's net platform for sound and visual works that originally stemmed from his Seasonal performance concerts. I believe they are no more but he continues to arrange phonography meetings in New York state.

We also heard cuts from Melbourne's Boy Is Fiction, a very special live recording from Dallas Simpson out of the UK, Jim O'Rourke's contribution to the Avanto festival cd (that John Chantler recommended to me – thanks John!), the new Hecker release on Rephlex, the sounds of the Quiet American's Serendipity Machines, and the new one for Sascha Neudeck, a biochemist and musician from Vienna. I'm not sure how the two converge but he always manages to produce some interesting sound work.

Hi folks,

With the brief exception of Sunday, the days in Melbourne have been hot and humid. Rain on Friday and Saturday didn't prevent a feeling that you could cut the air with a knife. Some of you may think it would be uncomfortable, and still, I have to say that I love the changing seasons. Melbourne does them so well.

Thanks to Matt Rösner (WA) and Shoeb Ahamad (ACT) for travelling to play at last week's wonderful shows. Shoeb and I played together at the 'Drawing Of Sound' night last Thursday, curated by Zac Keiller.

After that, the third Symbiosis Listening Focus at West Space featured Matt, Joe Talia and myself. The space looked great and all the performances were well received. Sunday saw us at the East Brunswick Club for another set of great sounds from Robin Fox, Shoeb and Matt. Thanks to all the artists, both West Space and East Brunswick Club for their support, and of course, thank you to all of you who came to the shows.

On a personal note, the wonderful Wandering Ear label has just released a remix compilation, based on sounds from their first release 'Thaw'. My track, "Thaw Cracks The Ice" is included. Check it out at www.wanderingear.com

17th January, 2007: Two live performances from the studio this week - both by interstate artists.

The Empire Builder, a daily passenger train between Chicago and Seattle, approaches the Amtrack
station in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota late on the evening of September 18, 2006. I like the interesting mechanical sound at about :20 seconds into this clip. This recording was made with a pair of Crown GLM-100E mics mounted on opposite sides of a small cellphone case and attached to a laptop computer shoulder bag. Recorder is a Sony MZ-M100 Hi-MD recorder...

I lived for some months across the street from six parallel train tracks - CTA, Chicago Metra and the Conrail interstate lines, each with a distinctive sound: the CTA train's "12,1234, 1234, 12" cadence as it passes by a switch {or
something}, the steady, TIE fighter roar of Metra train and my favorite, the long, slow-moving freight trains. These trains would grind to slow, screeching halts a few times a day, and, an hour or so later, resume their journeys with Penderecki-esque groans, creaks and wails. There was always traffic on the street below, so I could never get a clean recording, but I think you'll see what I mean. These were recorded with Sonic Studios DMS6-EH microphones and a Sony Hi-MD MZ-RH1.
