To New York Comicon I go

Giving a talk with 'The Hickman' and then watching him on a panel as he tears it up about life, the job, the mission and WAR. See you there.

Geek love and Technosaur

Geek love

So we got all of these archive boxes from origin recently. They made Ultima and the wing commander stuff. We got them because we look after Ultima Online. Now some of the stuff was big and obvious, like the big Ultima Painting. But other stuff was, well, in boxes.

Mark is rightly protective and careful about the history of computer games and companies; he even has the old signs from the old offices in his new office. So he and I went down to 'rummage' about. It was fun and interesting. We found the odd Wing Commander helmet and then the stuff went into storage.

Obviously at some point we would look through it all, I mean at some point. You know, like when we get WAR finished. Then I got an email. Turns out that the small video diary clip with the Wing Commander Helmet had got the attention of a web site that collect archive material on Origin. A few sheepish emails later and I managed to get them some box hugging time with the stuff in storage.

It was uplifting to see normal people who are obviously super fans of Origin, Ben, the leader, took time and care to look through the boxes, as he did he uncovered stuff that made him happy beyond the realms of Mountain dew. Strange CD's with pen scribble on them brought forth woops of joy. 'Lost' game designs where discovered and the odd 'lost' game. For those of you that don't have this obsession with 'lost' games try to imagine finding any of the 'lost' movies. The seventh cut of Blade runner, the 7 hour version of Apocalypse now, or the mythical lost 5 hour Lynch Dune cut. If movies are not your thing how about lost albums, the Beatles and Elvis jam session and so forth.

I have no real idea how great 'technosaur' is, but I do know that when it was discovered we got nothing but cheers of joy and total geek out. It was a human moment and when they return to really dig through the boxes I shall be filming it!

The collectors edition

I like it, its heavy and has nice books. I have been busy making a ’talk along’ audio  section for the art book as we could not load it up with all the none sense I wanted to spout about our art work. I aim to release it after the art books out as a seperate download somewhere. You know, a sort of ’read along’, ’did you know’ and art book comentary. Hopefully I will be able to get a few of the artists to comment along with it. Obvioulsy I will have to get them drunk first as they are shy

And that might mean you get to hear more from the towering character known as TED. He of the caustic comments and dark wit. We live in hope.

What game would you make a success

A follow on from what game would you unmake is the idea that you can change a game (or hardware) from failiure or small success into big success. I mean would the landscape look different if that Virtual Reality stuff had been really popular? How about the Dreamcast selling massive? Maybe that game "The Sentinel" cold have altered game history? So if you could change the face of the game world by granting stunning success, just what would you pick?
