My Interview With Angie Green, Former Vocalist Of Serpentine, Deluge, and THC
Category: Music

Angie Green

(Feel free in the comments to ask Angie questions, she may or may not respond, any other bands that want to be interviewed in the manner, hit me up in my inbox)

Memphis, Tennessee. Those two words bring to mind only one thing for most people. The Peabody Ducks. Now secondarily, people may also think about such things as Barbecue, the Blues, Sun Records, Graceland, a quality college basketball team, Elvis, Martin Luther King jr.'s assassination, and even the birthplace of one Death Metal Shawn (I was cured, though). All that said, the main thing people think about are those Peabody Ducks. I've had the honor and priviledge to interview one Angie Green. She was the incredible voice behing the bands THC, Serpentine, and Deluge. now she's looking for a new band...

1)DMS: YOU ARE A BROAD. OBVIOUSLY. SO WHY ARE YOU OUT SINGING WHEN YOU SHOULD BE HOME DOING LAUNDRY, COOKING, AND VACUUMING?
Angie:

HA HA HAAAAA!!!!! THAT'S HILARIOUS! ....What's THAT??

Maybe it's because I played with Hot Wheels when I was a kid- instead of dolls?
Oh- and when I wasn't playing cars, I was SINGING or skating!
_____________________________
2)DMS: BEING FROM TENNESSEE, YOU ARE A HICK. GIVEN THAT FACT, SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT WOULD MAKE A TRACTOR 'SEXY'.
Angie:
OOOOH! I'm gonna move right on past that intelligent "Hick" comment....

What would make a tractor sexy?? That's an easy one! ....Just put a hot chick on it!
____________________________
3)DMS: YOU ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING TO PUT A BAND TOGETHER. WHAT IS THE ONE KEY COMPONENT EVERY BAND NEEDS TODAY (BESIDES A TRIANGLIST)?
Angie:
I'll give you four:
Originality.....Talent.....Power....and a bad ass female vocalist who doesn't do a bunch of sissy crap.

______________________________
4)DMS: YOUR VOICE HAS BEEN DESCRIBED BY SOME AS 'JABBA THE HUT GIVING BIRTH', 'A HIPPO GNAWING ON JANIS JOPLIN', 'THE SOUND OF FORNICATING CATTLE', AND EVEN BY ONE PERSON AS 'THE SOUNDTRACK OF A VOMITORIUM'. I PERSONALLY DON'T AGREE COMPLETELY WITH THIS. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR VOCAL STYLE? WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR INFLUENCES (WITHOUT NAMING NAMES)?
Angie:
[laughter] Ohhh...ha-ha-haaa...Ummm...Maybeee, Geoff Tate meets James Hetfield.....and very loud.
I've been told since the beginning, that I had balls. [ha-haaa]
My long-time friend and drummer, Amanda...an awesome drummer, by the way [who's currently in the Memphis Roller Derby....goes by the name:"Hustlin' Flow"] put a comment on my page, saying: "Angie's voice will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. And she can go from James Hetfield to Phil Anselmo and back again. Amy Lee, run and hide!"
I thought that was so cool! It really meant ALOT coming from her.

My influences?... Geoff Tate, Bruce Dickenson, Dio, Savatage, Judas Priest, ...and that girl who sings with Geoff Tate in "Suite Sister Mary"! ...Beautiful!!
Pat Benatar was my very first rock influence, though. Before her, I had mastered Crystal Gayle; but then I got a hold of a Pat Benatar album, "Crimes of Passion". I don't even know where I got it... It was SOMEones...but whoever's it was, they never saw it again. Anyway, I LOVED IT! I would sing it in my room constantly! ...I could sing it word-for-word, note-for-note. ..THAT'S where I learned to sing with BALLS.  I never liked singing falsetto....that was for wimps and sissies; whatever I sang, I sang with everything I had.....and still do.
Later on, when Operation Mindcrime came out, that's all I would listen to! I loved singing it....Geoff Tate's voice  was...phenomenal!! And the songs were brilliant!!
That album was a Masterpiece!!

OH!- I named names didn't I?
______________________________
5)DMS: ANY TRUTH TO THE RUMOR THAT SEVERAL OF YOUR MALE BANDMATES USED TO REQUEST CO-ED CHANGING ROOMS?
Angie: HA-HAAAA! .. That's pretty-much what we had! .....Unless I stepped into the bathroom.

__________________________
6)DMS: BEING THAT YOU ARE WHAT SCIENTISTS AND BIOLOGISTS, PERHAPS EVEN SOME DOCTORS REFER TO AS A CHICK, DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU BETTER UNDERSTAND AND CONNECT WITH DRUMMERS (WHO, AS WE ALL KNOW, TEND TO THINK AND ACT LIKE CHICKS)?
Angie:
[laughter, again] That's funny you'd say that! Since my first drummer WAS a chick!!!
But actually, I seem to connect well with the guitarists ;)

____________________________
7)DMS: TELL US ABOUT THE TIME YOU DATED TWO GUYS FROM EPOCH OF UNLIGHT SIMULTANEOUSLY. OR WAS IT EVERY MOTHER'S NIGHTMARE?? (I GET THOSE BANDS CONFUSED)
Angie:
Ha-ha!! I'm not really sure.  It was probably both....
The trick was- keeping the guys in MY band from talking. lol
_____________________________
8)DMS: ON AN EPISODE OF SOUTH PARK (THE 'JAKOVASAURS' EPISODE), IT WAS STATED THAT ALL 'BIG, DUMB, ANNOYING PEOPLE' ARE FROM MEMPHIS?
Angie:
I think their writers had been visiting Frayser, at that time.

_________________________________
9)DMS: TELL US 5 ALBUMS THAT EVERYONE SHOULD OWN?
Angie:
"Operation Mindcrime" ...Queensryche
"The Wall"....Pink Floyd
"Master of Puppets" ....Metallica
"Piece of Mind" ....Iron Maiden
"Vulgar Display of Power"....Pantera
___________________________________
10)DMS: YOU DO FOLD YOUR BANDS LAUNDRY, RIGHT????
Angie:
HELL NO!

....They each have one outfit!

Top 10 Albums Of 2007!
Category: Music

Top 10 Albums Of 2007
Category: Music

This year, for the first time in like 16 years, I toyed with the idea of skipping my annual top 10 list. Overall, it was a rather lackluster year for metal, but there were a few very bright spots that deserved mention. We lost a few great musicians, unfortunately, again, but yet we carry on...

Here they are in reverse order...

10)DEVIN TOWNSEND - "Ziltoid: The Omniscient"
This is far from Devin's most creative work. Very far actually. However, he brings back the epic comedy that made his PUNKY BRUSSTER album so great. "Ziltoid..." was a fun tale about an alien's quest for the perfect cup of coffee. I can appreciate that concept.

9)ANAL CUNT - "Defenders Of The Hate"
They are back with even better song titles. Don't believe me? Look them up, or somebody post them as a comment. A.C. has finally released an album with really good production as well (by their standards, anyway). A far better listen than "It Just Gets Worse" (their 1999 release and last full length).

8)MANOWAR - "Gods Of War"
Manowar is God. Now that that is out of the way... This is far from the best Manowar has to offer, but still a very solid CD. Many fars were turned off by the fact that the band experimented a little bit on this album by adding orchestral elements. I feel, however, that it added a certain depth. There are still the very epic, bombastic tunes than we fans have come to expect, along with a few cheesy songs that we diehards appreciate. I would still pay $200 to see Manowar live...(hopefully that day will come)

7)THERION - "Gothic Kaballah"
For the early part of the year, this was the best that 2007 had to offer in my opinion. Therion is ever amorphous in their style and sound. This may be their best since "Theli" to my ears. They've included songs that borderline on great hard rock to go along with their metal symphony. A double CD is a lot to digest in one setting, but if you've got nothing better to do...

6)MATRIARCH - "Revered Unto The Ages"
This album will be in many people's top 10 list because they are some fine Puerto Rican beauties, but don't let that quality deny you of the insane metal these girls deliever. Guitarist/operatic vocallist Vanessa is a rare talent that may eventually get cherry picked (no sexual innuendo intended) but a more established band. Check out their myspace page if you are into girls who play brutal.

5)AFTER DEATH - "Retronomicon"
If you miss Nocturnus and you love Arcturus' style of spacy extreme metal, then After Death is your cup of  tea. For the uninitiated, Mike Browning, formerly of Nocturnus, is the man behind Tampa's After Death, and the seem to have recovered the ball that was fumbled by Nocturnus after their break up. Very deep and introspective, musicaly speaking, this is metal for the darkest of nights.

4)CANDLEMASS - "King Of The Grey Islands"
I am/was a huge fan of Messiah Marcolin. Now I wonder why. After he left, again, and was replaced by vocalist Rob Lowe (of Solitude Aeturnus fame), the band sounds fresher and better than ever. Lowe adds that element that the band always needed.

3)OBITUARY - "Xecutioner's Return"
Wow!!! This is what death metal is all about! Obituary returned this year with a monumental step up from 2005's "Frozen In Time". The key new element... Ralph freakin' Santolla on lead guitar. His style is certainly different from the work he did on Iced Earth and Deicide albums. In fact, his style is reflective of Chuck Schuldiner on this one. So, imagine Chuck playing lead for a recharged Obituary, and this is what you get!

2)KING DIAMOND - "Give Me Your Soul...Please"
Ive always respected and admired the King's work, but have never been a diehard. This album is special though. Very creative and haunting. The old man still has it. As usual, the album is a story that must be taken in sequence. These are his best musical arrangements possibly ever for his namesake band. Possibly even including his work in Mercyful Fate.

1)BIRDFLESH - "Mongo Musicale"
Squawk!!!!!!!!!!! This is what metal is all about. This is the album that might eventually crack my all-time top 10! So many directions. I know this band would be great to see live. These coffinfuckers have brought a breath of much needed fresh air to the grindcore scene. Hide your cats. Hide your kids. These freaks are on a rampage!

Dear Miserable Old Hag...

Yo, anyone looking for me can now add my new page www.myspace.com/friedchickenandmetal

The following is based on a true story.

Dear Miserable Old Hag,

Your desire to live and wallow in your own misery is fine, but when you use me as a pawn is your game to achieve everlasting drama to serve your own purposes, you have proven your worthlessness to me. Your actions have not only driven me out of character, and granted me a couple days of unnecessary insanity, you've also deeply affected people that I am closest to as well as some I am no longer close with. Your fucked up world view and your impulsive actions have given me a seething hatred I've never afforded to any other human. I've always been the one to forgive all who have transgressed me, but your move was unforgivable. When the reaper nearly introduced himself to you a couple months back, he should've completed the task. For my selfish sake. At best, your 'concern' was dubious in that you never seemed to care much about them anyway, as 'they' were always an inconvenience to you. At worst, your actions were a horrible game to amuse yourself is yet someone else's misery. Do the world a favor.

(I was gonna ask Leo to write this for me because he is far more brutal than I am, and it may even have been funny)

Thrashing And Slamming Like Helen The Pitt...
Category: Music

women.gif women image by THUND3RSTRUCK003

Continuing with a theme that Eric brought up in my Vinny Lecavalier blog, I read a survey that was done by media members as to which sport has the nicest athletes and which has the rudest. NASCAR (although I do not consider this a sport) followed by hockey were the nicest people. Basketball followed by baseball had the rudest. Coincidentally (maybe) the two sports with the nicer athletes are the two growing in appeal with the public at the fastest rates, while the two with the rudest athletes are suffering from the most fan apathy or antipathy. Go figure. Also, hockey is possibly the most brutal of the sports, yet overall the athletes are nicer people than those who play in the most passive sports basketball and baseball….

Are they still called elevators when they are going down? Just curious?….

Birdflesh is the most interesting of the newer metal bands. Yes, I know they've been around awhile, but they've only recently began to surface in the bigger picture….

On Fridays, at work, I countdown 510 minutes. That's how long I have to be at this place. For the record, as I type this, there are 506 minutes left before I can go home for the weekend….

BUCS vs. LIONS on Sunday!!! Go Bucs!!!….

I tried to hate ICP for years. However, and especially after seeing them live, I can't hate them. They've actually grown on me. What I don't like, however,  is that you can't find a well written review of one of their CDs online. They all seem like they were written by 16 year olds with a second grade intelligence level.  They may be the most creative band in rap…..

LOL @ people who prefer to be labeled as victims and use whatever crutch they can find to hold themselves back and not realize that we are all badass motherfuckers. Life is what you want it to be. You can have a successful life with less, and you can have an empty life with more. It's all how you perceive it….

Not to be understated. In 3 days, it will be 2 years since Maretta and I met. Just thought I'd sneak that little factoid in on you guys. I'm a lucky so-and-so, I know….

Oh yeah??? Well Leo's mom can beat up your mom!!!….

What Is Right In The World...
Category: Sports

Far too often people dwell on the negative when it comes to life in general. This is of course often portrayed at a higher magnitude when dealing with celebrities. Amid the ingrates who are constantly making the headlines, it is easy to assume that a majority of athletes are self absorbed cretins. I contend that these bad apples only make up a small percentage of the population, but of course they make the biggest splashes in the headlines, so I want to share with you something I heard that I thought was truly phenomenal.

Vinny Lecavalier of the Tampa Bay Lightning donated $3 million yesterday to All Childrens hospital here in St. Petersburg. Construction will begin there on a new pediatric cancer building. That is amazing. Hockey players don't make the money that athletes in the 3 major sports make. In fact, that is over half what he would make in a year.

Kudos to Vinny.

Do These Shoes Make Me Look Black??
Category: Music

First up, Kym's birthday is tomorrow (the 12th) and my son Dominique's is Saturday. He will be 7. Is that possible?? Wow. Happy birthday to all.

"Always Do Whatever's Next" – George Carlin

I could not possibly be more proud of my youngest sister. For someone whose been shuffled around into so many different and bad situations in her young life, and yet still manages to be a nice young lady, what more can be said. When most deal with THAT much in their formative years, they nearly always turn to the darker things in life. Britt, keep your head on straight, I'll always be a big fan.

I have been listening to an obscene amount of rap music lately. Mostly underground stuff, of course. Necro, Jedi Mind Tricks, Goretex, ICP, X-Clan, Handsome Boy Modeling School, NonPhixion,  along with great classic artists of the genre like NWA, Public Enemy, Ice-T, and Wu-Tang. Odd, I've not listened to this much of it since 5th grade. 1986 if you are keeping score.

Speaking of music, word has it that Lazer Lite is working on a very sentimental and somber power ballad for their deceased original drummer. "Lapdances In Heaven" will no doubt bring tears to many eyes. It's overdue though, a great glam band can never have too many power ballads.

It cannot be denied that Ralph santolla is now the best lead guitarist in death metal.

Death Row...
Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes

Why do they put a suicide watch on certain death row inmates? Why would you care if a man you were planning to kill kills himself? Does it spoil the fun? I also think about the death row prisoner in Texas who, on the day before his execution, managed to take a drug overdose. They rushed him to the hospital, saved his life, then brought him back to prison and killed him. Apparently, just to piss him off.
