      Hace tiempo que yo, personalmente, necesitaba que un grupo de estas características saliera a la palestra. Muchos opinaran por millonésima vez que es otro calco de Sisters, cosa que a mí me importa un pepino. ¿Acaso no degustamos de las copias de cada uno y todos los grupos que en su día dieron nacimiento a esta nación oscura?.

Realmente pueden ser Sisters en el 99 % de su quehacer pero hay un mundo que separa a cada clon del rey. Es su propia visión del estilo, su sentimiento, líricas, arreglos sonoros, estética, pose, etc. Por lo tanto, esta reseña la abordo con el fin de un vacío personal y con gran devoción por la aparición de otros hijos/hijas de los grandiosos The Sisters of Mercy!

The Daughters of Bristol son un grupo americano que en España están pasando sin pena ni gloria a excepción de todos aquellos fans del sonido de las Hermanas que en esta ocasión, y muy bien dicho, son fans del sonido de las Hijas!

En 2005, año donde hubo gratas noticias para el Gothic Rock de segunda generación (aquel que podríamos denominar como género estricto), algo sorprendió desde USA. "Voyage", Ep autoproducido con seis canciones de un corte realmente impresionante que consiguió ver la luz a pesar de la mala promoción. Sólo los más avispados pudieron obtener una copia a través de paypal.

En este ep, 'Velvet Curtains', 'Take you away', 'Give Rise', 'Voyage' y 'Sweet lies', sorprendían a muchos, al igual que la instrumental 'Mary death'!

'Velvet curtains' fue todo un himno que adornó las noches más underground de Madrid, un ritmo pegadizo, ácido y cortante, voces secas y tajantes y un palpable romanticismo mucho más amplio, en ocasiones cruzando las fronteras tenebrosas para adentrarse en composiciones de autor, por llamarlo de alguna manera!

Considero que "Voyage" es una pieza importantísima en la carrera de esta nueva banda, no sólo por ser material debut, sino porque para entender "Jones Hall" hay que escuchar estas canciones previas!

'Take you away' y 'Sweet lies' son un claro ejemplo de esta barrera auditiva, muy semejante a las noches de borrachera musical de Andrew Eldritch. Canciones largas, intimistas, con pasión y sentimiento, sin preocupación alguna por si puede ser considerado gótico o no! 'Give rise' y 'Voyage' sin embargo se acercan más al mundo de 'Floorshow' y temas poco hechos del estilo "casposo" de las Hermanas de la Caridad que tanto gustan a los acérrimos!

No obstante, si estuviéramos valorando el Ep, pondríamos un 10 por todo lo alto. De seis canciones, las seis son impecables en todo sentido. Un ejemplo de disco "compacto" en todo el radio de su circunferencia!

A finales del 2007, The Daughters of Bristol parieron "Jones Hall", su primer LP con diez temas de los que podemos destacar más de la mitad.

Desgraciadamente no está disponible en tiendas, sólo puedes obtenerlo por Paypal y con una larga espera que puede durar unos meses como fue mi caso!

Las hijas son concebidas por dos hombres, Joseph y Edward. Ellos son los artífices de este sonido predominante de voz gutural, profunda, cerrada y elegante. En cuanto a la guitarra, Edward hace lo que buenamente puede, el resto es tema de cajas. Pregrabación que no desmerece en absoluto el resultado final de este primer LP y que no son producto de la mezcla automática o de la dejadez. Cada sonido de esta obra fue concienzudamente estudiado!

Otra vez un tema instrumental abre el cedé, 'St Lucia'. Y después tenemos un compendio de temas, unos más cercanos al "Voyage" y otros que podíamos adivinar que íbamos a escuchar en un nuevo disco.

'Promise Land', 'Moira', 'City lights', 'First terror', 'Black Reing/Bleak house', son las joyas de este blanco LP. Al ser todo autoproducido, bajo la discográfica hecha para la ocasión Magnolia recordings, el diseño es escueto y simple. Resumámoslo en Ep Negro, Lp blanco!. Ni letras, ni fotos ni caramelos pero en cuanto a música, no nos vamos a quejar.

Al igual que en "Voyage", en "Jones Hall" continúan con un temazo, 'Promise land', con la típica caja de ritmos al comienzo que suena muy ochentera. La guitarra un tanto aguda y una línea vocal un tanto vacilona. Los gritos que hicieron famoso a Eldritch están también muy presentes a lo largo de este álbum.

Si hay algo que me gusta en exceso en este redondo son los arreglos que dan floritura a este disco debut. A lo largo de los temas destacados puedes notar la presencia de sonidos que, una vez escuchado, sería imposible eliminar de los respectivos cortes!

'Moira' es un temazo, un tanto corto para mi gusto pero directo, con unos estribillos que te ponen los pelos de punta, un ritmo trepidante que no depende de la velocidad del tema y un sabor añejo en la guitarra que resulta imposible de oír ya en estos tiempos tan metalizados en los que algunas leyendas tienden a endurecer su sonido.

"Jones Hall" es un disco que raramente puede resultar aburrido y, aunque este tipo de sonido tenga más de un par de décadas, al escucharlo no puedes evitar que a la primera te entren todos los temas. Será con la continua atención a la obra cuando podrás ir destacando tus favoritos pero raro es que alguna "no te guste". Más aún si te gustan los archiconocidos Sisters!

'City ligths' por ejemplo, tiene un ritmo más ritual, con un comienzo algo tribal. Joseph hace un buen uso de su voz combinándolo con frases de cosecha propia que abren la mente a otros parajes líricos. Tal vez una influencia de la etapa renegada de Eldritch!

'Deep' se acerca mucho al '1959', 'Under the gun', u otros temas de guitarra clásica y voz. Un duelo intimista a modo de balada pero que nunca llega a ser tal!

"El río baja rojo, una vez cada cierto tiempo": 'Red river', quizás un meandro sonoro del "Floodland" de los TSOM, es el ejemplo más claro de la negrura que Eldritch depositó en manos de los The Daughters of Bristol. Una sencilla línea guitarrera, constante y repetitiva, una voz cavernosa y melancólica combinada con una percusión absolutamente hermosa, lenta y decadente. Llamando a las puertas del desastre natural tratando de oír un bajo mudo que casi no quiere hablar.

La progresión de este disco me sorprende porque empieza demoledor. A mitad del mismo parece que nos estamos haciendo viejos y resumimos la vida en un duelo de voz y guitarra pero, ya casi al final, unos temas como 'Black Reign/Bleak house' con su ritmo in crescendo, el juego de voces, los sonidos rockeros un tanto sucios y con un final decreciente, hacen que vuelva a poner el disco desde el principio. Amén del corte 'At my window', donde mandan el bajo y la voz de Joseph que tiende a encariñarse y jugar con la melodía dándole un toque comercial con el que cierra este maravilloso disco!

Y bueno..algunos temitas más que dejo a tu juicio pero que estoy seguro te gustarán.

Un disco que puede mejorar, sí, en producción quizás, por fuera más que por dentro. Muchos estábamos esperando otro ejemplo de esta fórmula tan desgastada pero tan necesaria. Lejos de conseguir sorprendernos con originalidad, nos ofrecen un camino de continuidad a lo que un día fue el sendero de las masas. Hoy en día, de vez en cuando, saciamos nuestra hambre sonora con maravillosas apariciones como la de The Daughters of Bristol.

Si cogemos una frase de cada canción y las mezclamos unas con otras, seguro que tenemos otra canción donde prostitutas son reinas, las reinas son prostitutas, las luces de la cuidad dañan los ojos de los hombres que moran la tierra prometida y acaban muertos cuando el río baja rojo hacia la nada!

En resumen, la música no es sólo ruido y estos americanos saben darle el sentido a las palabras-notas usando un dialecto nacido en 1985 que tú y yo posiblemente seamos los últimos en comprender!

GarageBand, Gibson Les Paul and Line 6 Pod -- The Essential Gear Of Seattle’s The Daughters of Bristol

The Daughters of Bristol are a Seattle post-punk outfit whose influences range from Bowie to Sisters of Mercy -- and anything dark and from the 80s.

"Over time, we evolved from working on music on the front steps of Dulany Auditorium during late night escapes from their University studies into The Daughters of Bristol," says guitarist, Edward Nicholas." We just want to continue moving forward under our influences, in addition evolving into our own."

The piece of gear the band prizes the most is an Apple Powerbook.

"This is something that is very much self explanatory just by mentioning Apple, but having this has really empowered us as a band. Our first release, Voyage was done in the studio, producer/engineer in the driver seat. Let’s just say we had very little control and there was little to no sense of urgency on the studios part to assist us with moving the release in a timely manner," says Nicholas. "Having the Apple Powerbook allowed us to record and release Jones Hall on our own terms. Further more, it has allowed us to put together ideas, brainstorm, and have full control with our music."

When it comes to the most useful gear Nicholas is a fan of Line 6.

"Our most useful and at times can be our most prized, is our POD by Line 6. I have used this equipment since the band started 6 years ago. My brother had bought one a year before and I was very much impressed. The first reason is that it gave me the sound I was looking for, a very British Rock sound with a lot of delay and chorus effects available," he says. "Secondly, it’s perfect when playing shows, because you don’t have to drag around a lot of equipment. There have been some shows I have left my Marshall amp at home and just run my POD Line 6 direct. It still sounded amazing, but more importantly it allowed us not to have to worry about additional equipment."

Nicholas says he is very happy with the gear he plays -- especially his Les Pauls and his most recent acquisition -- a Fender.

"For almost 10 years I have played exclusively Les Paul in this band and previous bands, and in recording sessions. But most recently I picked up a Stratocaster and just was so amazed by this guitar."

"Yes, it’s not as full sounding, but I felt I was actually in control of the guitar and a handicap was removed. I still enjoy my Les Paul, but it’s so big, so heavy, and the fret action limits me."

It is possible for Gibsons and Fenders to just get along.

The band’s recording technique is "throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks" style.

"When we record or work on a new idea, we more or less just let it fly. But of course if it is something good that myself or Joseph has in mind, we power up the Apple and record it on GarageBand. Many times this just happens at the spur of the moment, but it allows us to really capture an idea before it’s gone," he says "In the past before we used Mac’s and released Voyage, we would run Acid Planet on my Dell computer. I occasionally use it and its still a good software, but from what I have seen and the control given to the user, nothing beats a Mac at this point. We try to just let things happen and flow in the moment."

The Daughters of Bristol released their second CD, Jones Hall this past winter and are hoping to have a third release ready by next winter. They plan shows in the Pacific Northwest and other parts of the West Coast soon.

If I were to do the research for this review by consulting the Wise Woman from series two of Black Adder the conversation might go something like this:

Young Crone: Two things, my Lord, must ye know of The Daughters of Bristol. Me: Yes? Young Crone: First, they are not from Bristol! [I roll my head in exasperation.] Young Crone: And second, they are... Me: Not daughters? Young Crone: [In a normal voice.] You do know 'em, then!

"St Lucia" opens the album, full of melancholy piano. It sets the mood but isn't representative of what follows. "Promise Land" has a tinny drum machine, crisp flange-treated guitars and Joseph's Bowie-esque vocals. Simple synth stabs add colour to the chorus. There is mention of 'calling my name' which is quite the done thing for this sort of song. It's sprightly, catchy and should have dark clad hordes on the dance floor. Once I got over the disappointment that "Moira" wasn't about the dwarves' home in Lord of the Rings, I was impressed with its Sisters of Mercy styling circa First and Last and Always. Two minutes in the music builds, before dropping away to leave vocals and tentative guitars. It's an act of bravado that reaps dividends. Too often this sort of music can stay at the same level, not something you can accuse The Daughters of Bristol of.

The Daughters (we do call them The Daughters don't we?) borrow the guitar sound from "Amphetamine Logic" for "To Wonder Streets". The 80s sounding synths add depth. Joseph and Edward are 'searching for a destination', which simultaneously recalls – and disagrees with – The Sisters of Mercy's "Train" which categorically states: 'Everybody got a destination/Everybody got a place to go.' Maybe we can't all be as confident in our direction as Andrew Eldritch. "City Lights" has the drum machine set to 'tribal', which is particularly effective when coupled with the sultry bass. The multi-tracked vocals create a disorientating feeling, as if the listener had indulged in illegal substances.

"Deep" has the chorus-filled acoustic guitar, used by The Sisters of Mercy in "Something Fast". Even with just the voice and guitar The Daughters make a sound worth listening to. I am taken by a perverse desire to see them tackle Extreme's "More Than Words" in a Gothic stylee. "First Terror" picks up the pace again. It sounds as if were recorded in the same spooky, echo-y cavern used by The Cure when recording their Faith album. "Red River" is a little dirge-y. There's nothing wrong with it exactly, it just doesn't stand out much.

Can there be a more goth song title than "Black Reign/Black House"? It's not only about a house that is of the darkest colour, but also a term in a position of power of the same hue. A piano sound boosts the already lively chorus. I was going to suggest that this would work well in clubs, but it has potential to confuse dancer and DJ as four minutes in, the first part (presumably "Black Reign") fades abruptly, to be replaced by the quiet "Black House" which it isn't possible to dance to. A Sisters-like bass lies at the heart of "At My Window", where Joseph acts as observer and commentator on the world.

The Daughters of Bristol aren't going to win any prizes for originality, but I've long since stopped seeking that in my music anyway. What I want is something 'different, but the same'. Joseph and Edward take the sounds and atmosphere of bands I love and give me new avenues to explore, even if the city is essentially the same.

I lettori più affezionati di EDS sapranno che tempo fa "Voyage", l'ep di debutto dei Daughters of Bristol, fù consacrato "cd del mese" contribuendo, almeno si spera, alla notorietà del gruppo anche dalle nostre parti. A distanza di due anni ma nello stesso giorno, il 13 Dicembre, la band Americana dà alle stampe l'attesissimo album d'esordio "Jones Hall" formato da dieci inediti.
I Daughters of Bristol confermano la loro opera di "macelleria" tagliando tutto il superfluo che oggi attecchisce nel gothic-rock riscoprendo in canzoni quali "Promised land", "Moira" o "To wonder streets" la vera essenza del goth fatta di Velvet Underground, Suicide e Stooges, essenza già colta parecchi anni fa da Andrew Eldritch ma che oggi risulta annacquata -o appesantita, dipende dai punti di vista-  dalle nuove generazioni di nerovestiti.
Il mix di secca drum-machine, essenziali giri di chitarra e baritonali vocalizzi di "First terror" così come il tribalismo metropoliano di "City lights" trasportano l'ascoltatore nei fumosi locali goth di inizio anni ottanta in cui l'unica luce concessa è quella emanata dai pallidi neon intermittenti. Rilevante qualità all'album è data dalle tracce d'atmosfera (poste quasi tutte alla fine cd) come "Black reign/Bleak house" divisa in due parti concatenate, "At my window", una driven-song caratterizzata dal binomio basso-synth o l'intensa "Red river", miglior composizione del lotto grazie al suo oscuro pathos; risulta invece un poco scontata la ballata "Deep" il cui richiamo melodico a "1959" è troppo palese.
Volendo definire in poche parole "Jones hall", differenziato dalla massa delle altre pubblicazioni attuali per il suo "minimalismo gothic-rock", affermerei che è il full-length che i primi Sisters of Mercy periodo 1980-1983 non hanno mai pubblicato…

These Daughters have a problem, which they clearly enjoy, but it's a problem nonetheless, for they do say that when you nail your colours too firmly to the mast you teeter on resembling a ghost ship, and who is that at the wheel of the Hairy Celeste? Why 'tis none other than Jolly Cap'n Eldritch, beard matted with salt spray, arms like steel hawsers, so they are! Arrrr!

I digress, but only because it pleases me and if the Sisters had ever covered a Monkees song we could have had a Davy Jones joke too, but that's how thoughtless they were. Eldritch may act the tosser at times but as well as creating some fantastic music (admittedly so long ago that Time Team are interested) he has cornered the market in what is an almost mathematically precise vocal delivery, and anyone replicating that seems a bit weird, or foolhardy to me ~ or they just love it, and Daughters Of Bristol openly admit the influence. Anyway, this sleek and smart album doesn't start like that. Oh no!

'St Lucia' is a divine piano track, so beautiful in fact I could have done with a whole album of it, but that's something they can always do separately. 'Promised Land' then opens the door marked Goth Central and there's a Sisters feel throughout, mellow and purring, with some silky synth, subtly buffed guitar and dignified, agile vocals. 'Moira' has sounds hanging in the air around the liquid, spidery guitar lines, and the muted vocals are well shepherded by the sounds as the song gathers for little pushes. 'To Wonder Streets' is a more insolent, roving tune, by turns hushed, then weary, caught on some agonising razor wire. 'City Lights' gets rattling with cute drums and soulful bass as things go for a more interesting, wispy approach that has a greater strength because of its confidence than any noisy attack.

'Deep' opens with that familiar combination of slow rosy strumming, and deeply aching, forlorn vocals, with the tone of the song one of a defiant depression, optimism hoping to emerge triumphant. 'First Terror' is an interesting, twittering song which allows some of their quieter, simpler sounds to dance inside big guitar footprints, and so a discreet solemnity is pulled together in an unusual form, then the slinky 'Red River' rests on some more pleasantly crushed Goth laurels, and it's pretty despite the guitar being a bit weedily laboured for once. The spirited 'Black Reign / Bleak House' loses points for using the word boulevard, but otherwise it's an interesting and fragile thing. With a robust bass 'At My Window' sidles away and fades out like a curious thought.

You get quite a range on here, so don't think this is a copycat excursion. It's got its obvious similarity, which they'd better off without, but maybe it's inextricably linked, like organ donation.

Goth, of a sanctified splendour.
