XLR8R Dec 2007 Review

They write:

Don't like synth punk? Then slap on some Iraqi mash up philosophy fron DJ Foundation. From the genius who mashed porno samples and readings of the Koran (God Is Dead) comes the single "I Shot You Babe"(Metal Postcard) which is a gunshot riddled remake of Sonny & Cher's classic (in case you needed it spelled out for you). With its simple makeover using a gurgling moog line and the word "shot" instead of "got" you will either hate it or see it asthe protest to Americans, you know, invading a country or whatever.

Mention In USA Blog

Martin De Leon says

So, I figured I'd start making tiny lists of stuff I'm listening to since people ask me and I always blank. I always forget who I write about in my XLR8R column or a dope track I've heard on a music blog or some new shit I scooped up on Murdochspace. I'll try to post a link where you can hear the songs I'm listening to as of late. They might be old, they might be new. But, hopefully they won't be boring. Feelings. Shoot me an e-mail if you want to know more about a particular track.

1) Yellow Swans- Mass Mirage (Link)

Ambient goodness from Portland noise group. I first head of these guys from Xiu Xiu when he gave me their CD. That record was more noisier a la Wolf Eyes but this is far more blissful and ecstatic. It's also great for writing. Heard this one off of 20 Jazz Funk Greats, which is always pure heat.

2) M.I.A.- Paper Planes (Bun B/Rich Boy remix) (Link)

Sri Lankan singer and Houston's finest over what is one of the sickest, yet simple beats I've heard in a long time. Gold.

3) DJ Foundation - I Shot You Babe (Link)

Iraqi producer who makes simple mash-ups and quirky tracks. I'm feeling this one as of late. When you visit his page, make sure to shut off that annoying Bob Dylan ad. Unless that is an aural collage.

4) Grizzly Bear - Alligator (Choir version) (Link)

Pretty song. That's it.

5) Bob Dylan- Boots of Spanish Leather (Link)

I need to go back and listen all 8,391 hours of music this man has made. Apparently, I've missed a few gems. Like "Boots of Spanish Leather" where his voice was still that of a young dude and not a 91 year old walking piece of Jewish sandpaper. I'm kidding, Bob. Bob, please don't look at me like that.

6) Cafe Tacuba- Arrullo (Link)

From their latest album, these guys just don't quit. Postcolonial pop at its finest where prickly synths poke at Ruben's silly-putty voice while the entire slow mess comes to a cathartic ending. Buen hecho, seƱores.

USA Review in UK DJ Magazine

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Getting tunes and mixes from dj foundation can be hard", say his people. That's not surprising. He's from Mosul , Iraq. Really. I thought it was a marketing gimmick but he's for real, and this big dumb, US Army & Van Halen sampling tune/mix/boot/cultural phenomenon is what i call an anthem
