The latest Genders NEWS
Category: Music

Ello kiddies!

Here's the latest news from The Genders' camp.. sadly we parted ways with bass player Ofer last week, he was unable to commit to the duration of the upcoming US tour and other future engagements so we amicably went our seperate ways. we wish him good luck in his endeavours and especially in the new production he's starting of an Israeli star whose identity we can't reveal at this point..

we're overwhelmed by the number of bassists wanting to audition for us, we've already tried out 8 these past few days, so many good bassists to choose from! and there are still more coming this week, we're confident we'll find the right guy/gal and be in top form for the tour.

also new songs from the forthcoming album posted on our myspace page finally! check out these brand new kickass tunes, along with an updated version of good old Horatio!

Tuesday, August 29 come out to see Amir perform a psyched-out medley of Genders tunes with Sharon K of The Girls at Levontin 7 in Tel Aviv, 10:00pm.

Peace and luv

van broken in to.. gear stolen..

dec 28th
our NYC gig on the 26th was a blast, CB's Gallery is such a fun place to play.. the afterparty with half the members of the band Violator and the incredible Bohemian Society guys was equally cool... we all split up for the night to our seperate "sleeping arrangements", the van was with yours truly. Due to a severe parking shortage, I put the damn thing about a half mile  from the appartment.. Dunno how they broke in, cause there's an alarm on that thing that would raise the fucking dead, but they walked away with a beautiful Fender P-bass, a 70's Univox Les Paul copy that I loved dearly, a Pearl brass floating-rim snare drum, a pearl tom, my beloved effect pedals (waaaaaah) and a case of merch ..at least there's gonna be some stylish criminals walkin' the streets of NYC, lol..
OK so yeah, all of those who constantly warned us about this, thanks but no thanks, we had it coming bla bla bla. we're still gonna finish this tour in style, we'll play the Massachusetts shows and the New Years NYC show with some help from our friends and we'll rock just as hard on the borrowed equipment..
Happy New Year,
Amir

finally! tour diary no 2

holy crap it's been a long time on the road it feels like a life time. We are in Atlanta, GA now hanging out with Glenn from the Cogburns, if you haven't checked them out yet do so NOW because they are one of the best bands out there. We were in complete AWE of Johnny's guitar playing last night.

There's no way we can break all the dates down and tell you about every single show at this point cause there were SO MANY!! Main thing is that we are still alive and relatively sane, we're getting along better than ever and that means a lot when you're on the road, trust me. We've met so many cool people, and so many great bands, they'll all be mentioned but that'll have to wait until we get back home cause it would take too much time. We wanna give you links to all these bands so you don';t have to look through our ever-growing friends list.

If anyone has photos from one of our shows, feel free to post it on our comments page for everyone to see, we've got a few emailed to us but we never have enough time to post them . watch the schedule for some last minute changes, a NYC gig has been added at CB's 313 gallery, for example.

Merry Christmas to all our friends and thank you for everything, you know who you are!

Love

Amir

tour diary 2005 entry 1
Current mood: loved

shalom mutherfuckers!

we're finally posting our first entry of our tourdiary! we're in Rochester, NY right now watching a Ramones documentary and rocking out !!

10/28 the tour kicked off in NYC at the Lit Lounge with The Repercussions and Dead Blonde Girlfriend. That was a great night, the Lit is a great place to play, it was packed and sweaty and we had a blast! The 65$ parking ticket that awaited us when we were loading in kinda put a damper on the night... putting us at a total of 260$ worth of parking tickets in NYC. fuck. Thanks Sharon and Tal for the hospitality, thanks Heather and Becky of 777s for giving us their bass head for the tour cause ours blew up on stage right on the first song..

10/29 next we drove out to CT and played at Wesleyan U. It was a halloween show and we went in full drag! what sucks is that all those pictures Maya took (Maya's our merch person and one man camera crew) got deleted in a bizarre gardening accident. (watched Spinal Tap so excuse the constant Tap references LOL) Reunited with the maserful Mathematicians on that show and a pact was made to play our next joint show in Albany on Halloween dressed up as each other. The Genders dressed as the Mathematicians and visa versa.

10/30 But before that came the Flywheel gig in Easthampton, MA, one of our favorite places to play ever! We had a great show and we'll be back there (for all of you MASS fans who missed it, apparently there's a bunch of you out there) on December 30th. Thanks Justin of ABM for being the best host ever!

10/31 Next is Halloween at Red Square in Albany with the Mathematicians and the wonderful Parwana, introducing the Gendermaticians (or was it the Mathemagenders??) best mathematicians show we've ever witnessed (and we've witnessed many..) cause they actually got into charecter and played a show as the rock'nroll baddasses that WE are! apparently you CAN play 'eavy metal in Dobly...

11/1 Abbey Lounge in Boston is closed due to a fire hazard or something. so we took the day off, we'll be playing the Abbey lounge 12/29 stay tuned for details..

11/2 Recorded a TV show for Comcast in Springfield Massachusetts. The show's called the "New Music Showcase". Everything almost fell apart but we ended up doing it in flying colors!! stand by for clips from that show.. Right after the rap of that taping we rushed over to the Flywheel again to jump on the bill and played a scorching 30 minute set to some wild local punk kids who went apeshit and did cartwheels all over the room!

11/3 Rochester NY, the long drive was easy, we got to the Bugjar and met Yer Mom (the band), Amy and Joey we love you guys, thanks for the hospitality and a great show! Michelle of Universal Buzz radio recorded the show for the dhow, stay tuned for that recording, should be excellent!

We're heading out to Buffalo tomight, watch this space for pictures and more stuff coming up!

Rockin' in Ramallah

Our CD is finally coming out it'll be out in stores in Israel by the first week of September, and in North America around Halloween. Meanwhile, here's what we wrote in the liner notes:

We started laying down tracks for this album right after the coffee shop down the street from our studio was bombed. Ofer was right there; the blast shook the building and broke all the windows. We initially intended the album as an escape – pure entertainment to keep your mind off the shit that’s going down right under your nose. I guess we failed at that task, ‘cause most people seem to regard the material as “political”. I keep getting asked where we stand with our politics, or in the words of one cute Canadian girl, “Are you Zionists?” So I wrote these liner notes to try to explain as best I can.

I don’t think you can put two words together about our neck of the woods without politics rearing its ugly head. It’s a matter of semantics; even the term “Palestinian” is tainted with politics, but an Arab rock’n’roll band would probably say otherwise in their liner notes. If you’re a Palestinian, “West Bank” (or the pain-free biblical “Judea & Samaria” as the Jewish settlers like to call it), is just a euphemism for “occupied territories”. Whatever you care to name it, Ramallah (pronounced ra-MAH-la) is where it’s at if you wanna get your kicks across the “green line”. (Long story, if you want the big picture, read a book or something)

Not that we’ve ever been there, we’re scared shitless of getting lynched. Here’s a good place to point out that the Israeli army makes the lives of millions of Palestinians miserable every day, and that thousands of innocent men, woman and children were killed by Israeli authorities over the past few years alone. (Obviously thousands of Israelis are massacred by aforementioned suicide bombings). But in my sleazy fantasies, Ramallah is where hot intellectual Palestinian girls sit around and have passionate, subversive political discussions wearing skimpy lingerie... The day The Genders play in Ramallah is when you know it’s finally “peace in the middle East”, and girls, you know you’re invited…

But we’d probably get lynched or bombed anyway, cause the suicide bomber guys are never gonna go along with any peace agreement. It’s a lose-lose situation either way you look at it. And if you think they’re the only ones who don’t want peace, you’re wrong. The irony is that the all-powerful Jewish religious right has more in common with the Islamic suicide kamikazes than anyone else. They’ll do anything to avoid peace, hell they assassinated Prime Minister Rabin, and they’ll stop at nothing. Anyway, not to end on a pessimistic note, I truly believe that rock’n’roll can save the world, if only more people chill out, rock out, and especially make out. If there were one place that needs it in this world, it would probably be Ramallah.  Peace.

What's hip in the Gaza Strip, baby?

We get asked where we stand on Arab / Israeli conflict, Gaza disengagement, Palestinian State so much, I wanna put this up here so everyone gets the long answer instead of each of you gets the nutshell in an email.

Granted, we live in a volatile part of the world, where some people are fighting to the death over a piece of real estate about the size of the state of Rhode Island. But we're not those people. We're actually not in that part of the world at all. We live in a pretty large city called Tel Aviv, on the shores of the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, where extremely hot girls take their tops off to get an even tan, the bars are open till 7 AM and there's always a place open that plays loud rocknroll. I've been around the world, Amsterdam, London, pretty much every state in the U.S, and I gotta tell ya, Tel Aviv holds it's own..

Now the whole theme of our debut CD "Rockin' in Ramallah" is kinda like "A tale of two cities".. Ramallah is the West Bank major commercial city, kind of the Palestinian equivalent to Tel Aviv. Now, bars are non-existent in Muslim society, because Islam forbids alcohol consumption, but don't you worry 'bout them cats in Ramallah, I'll bet there's a bunch of 'em sitting in a cafe or restaurant as I type these words, getting their kicks some other way, and not giving a rat's ass about the Arab Israeli conflict.

Well maybe for a split second. Cause you see, while here in Tel Aviv, we can shut the TV and forget about the so-called "real world" that's out there, folks in Ramallah, they get daily reminders, hell I bet they get hourly reminders as to where they are, and what their place is in the hierarchy of Middle Eastern life. Downtrodden occupied population, in constant fear of the Israeli military, Secret Police, whatever. And it really shouldn't be that way. Damn it they deserve a safe haven from all that and Ramallah should be it. Just like us non-oppressive, free thinking peace loving Israelis have our Tel Aviv, why shouldn't they have theirs? A place to be young and carefree and alive, smoke weed, feel up a girl (if you're a girl, get felt up...)

Granted, there's some radical fuckers out here who'll do anything to make things worse. And granted, the Israeli Army is doing its job protecting the Israeli population from terrorism (by terrorizing the Palestinian population, thus creating more anger and ultimately more terrorism). Also, there's Jewish terrorists, I don't call them Israelis cause they don't either. They've distanced themselves from the Israeli belief system, Israeli (so-called) democracy. But the terrorism coin has two sides, don't let the media fool you, Islam does not have a monopoly over terrorism.

Ok enough with the history lesson for now. Any questions or comments? Feel free to post em right here. I won't delete it if I disagree with it. There'll be more in a few days, so stay tuned..
