These are 10 of my all-time favorite films, in no particular order. If you have some films to recommend me, that i maybe haven't seen, post em!!
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY The greatest of all science-fiction tales. I come across so many people that say they haven't watched this film in its entirety. They're missing out on some of the greatest "choreography" of all time, not to mention timeless special effects.
CITIZEN RUTH I was introduced to this, Alexander Payne's first film, by my friend Louise. Its comic timing is impeccable, its dramatic deftness is powerful, and Laura Dern delivers her finest performance. I'm still waiting for it to become a cult classic.
MULHOLLAND DR One of the greatest films of the last 10 years, David Lynch's trek through the Hollywood Dream is completely essential. No other film I know moves through tone, theme, and color quite like this one. plus there's this scene:
STOLEN KISSES My favorite Truffaut film, and the best in the Antoine Doinel Series. Pure French comedy at its best.
DARK CITY Ah. Classic sci-fi/noir. If you're a fan of either genre, this is must-see.
BARTON FINK I don't know how many times i've watched this film, but i think about it constantly. While the Coen Brothers never miss, and films like "The Big Lebowski" and "Fargo" are dear to my heart, I always come back to this one as their best. Such an understated classic and filled with some of the greatest visual imagery i've ever seen. John Turturro and John Goodman deliver tandem A+ performances. Nothing touches this film.
DOGVILLE Lars von Trier took me completely off-guard with this film. Just when you thought the film was headed for greener pastures, it takes a turn into hell. By the end of the film, i was smiling; i'd been successfully fooled and and enthralled by a movie.
PRINCESS MONONOKE This is bar-none the best animated film i've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, put it on your netflix or borrow it from someone--anyone. If you have seen it, watch it again--can't hurt.
WITHNAIL & I A true cult classic. They don't make comedy like this, ever. A 60-era road buddy film encased in a delicious British comedy shell. So, so good.
THE FOUNTAIN OK. So I've recently seen this film for the first time. The next day, I went out and bought it. It has already made it's way into my favorite ever pictures list, and i'm not overstating here--this movie is incredible. Most folks were not big fans of this film at the time, and it's almost impossible for me to see why. It is epic, trippy, heartbreaking, jubilant, operatic, perfect. See it see it see it. and then see it again.
