NC17 No More, Toronto and Crazy 4 Cult!

At an appeals screening last week, we were able to overturn the MPAA's NC17 rating for "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" to a more audience-friendly R without making any cuts...

All that really means is that what you see in theaters will be exactly what we were hoping to show you in theaters. None of this waiting around for the unrated DVD shit.

Meantime, here's another pic from the flick...

"Zack and Miri Make a Porno" opens October 31st.
--------------------

Crazy 4 Cult 2 is happening next week (on Melrose here in Los Angeles), and to get you a little wet for it, here are some advance images from the show...

Giant versions of 2cents' promo pieces are being installed inside the gallery...

As well as outside...

When the show opens, you'll see pretty fantastic pieces inspired by cult cinema. Like this piece by Andrew Wilson that's a veritable orgy of movie characters...

(If you wanna identify every character in the piece, surf over to this page).

Peep this "Stand by Me" piece...

Here's a familiar family portrait...

Name the flick...

Genius...

Some of you may remember the Crazy 4 Cult art exhibit Scott and I hosted at Gallery 1988 (on Melrose in L.A.) last summer.

Well, it's happening again...

August 22 at Gallery 1988, on Melrose in Los Angeles. View some wicked cool, movie-inspired art, then hang out afterwards for a party in the parking lot. If it's anything like last year's show, it's gonna be crowded (over a thousand peeps showed up) and fun.

-----------------

If you're gonna be in L.A. for the show, how's about rolling some cards as well?

The next (and first one since last year) Secret Stash West Hold 'Em McNeil Poker Tourney is the day after the Crazy 4 Cult event: Saturday, August 23rd. Interested parties looking to secure a seat and take home some green should send those emails to donkey@viewaskew.com.
-----------------

You say you're on the east coast and can't make it out for either Crazy 4 Cult or the Stash West Poker Tourney? No worries: we've got an events for you, too.

Firstly, the Toronto International Film Festival just announced that "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" will have it's world premiere there, Sunday, Sept. 7th. You can buy tickets here, starting Sept. 3. Be one of the first to see the flick in advance of its October 31st opening!

If you can't make it to Toronto for the screening, how about coming to Jersey for some Q&A? On November 7th, I'll be at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank for my third hometown Q&A...

Last year's show was shot for the next "Evening with Kevin Smith" DVD (due in stores this October). This time, there won't be any cameras getting in our way, as we shoot the shit for five-plus hours. Ticket info can be found here.

----------------

In case you missed me at the San Diego ComiCon this year, here are a bunch of links to some YouTube clips.

It was a busy Con for me: I moderated two panels (Scream Like a Girl and the "Battlestar Galactica" panel), sat on another (the Entertainment Weekly Visionaries panel), and hosted my own (the "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" panel). Peep out the clips.
---------------

The kind folks at VisionFest are giving me an award next week, at the Director's Guild here in L.A. Not sure if it's open to the public or not, but if it is, roll up.
---------------

We're unloading more props! Click here for the current Auctions Askew list.
------------------

And just so it's not all about me and my shit...

I saw "Watchmen." It's fucking astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off.

Remember that feeling of watching "Sin City" on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you'll come close to watching "Watchmen." Even Alan Moore might be surprised at how close the movie is to the book. March can't come soon enough.

Curious George, the Shadow of the Bat, and other stuff

It's only been a week, and the world feels much emptier without him.

Rather than post another eulogy here, I'll direct you over to the piece I wrote about my friend for Newsweek on Monday.

G'bye for now, Boss. I hope you were wrong about the afterlife - if only so that I can shoot the shit with you again one day.

-------

Courtesy of Peter Sciretta over at SlashFilm.com, I caught an early screening of "The Dark Knight" yesterday evening.

Without giving anything away, this is an epic film (and trust me: based on the sheer size and scope of the visuals and storytelling, that's not an overstatement). It's the "Godfather II" of comic book films and three times more earnest than "Batman Begins" (and fuck, was that an earnest film). Easily the most adult comic book film ever made. Heath Ledger didn't so much give a performance as he disappeared completely into the role; I know I'm not the first to suggest this, but he'll likely get at least an Oscar nod (if not the win) for Best Supporting Actor. Fucking flick's nearly three hours long and only leaves you wanting more (in a great way). I can't imagine anyone being disappointed by it. Nolan and crew have created something close to a masterpiece.

-------

Also in the Masterpiece Department, this shit...

If you haven't already peeped it, get thee to a theater. It's the ballsiest animated film ever made (right up there with "Persepolis", in terms of untraditional cartoons), yet it'll melt your heart. Seriously - Wall-E's so adorable, he makes E.T. look like Josef Mengele. Alright, maybe not Mengele, but at least Rudolf Hess. Y'know what? Let's drop the Nazi comparisons altogether and just leave it at this: Wall-E (the character) is adorable and "Wall-E" (the film) is a must-see.

-------

In the Far-Less-Than-a-Masterpiece department, "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" continues to move ever closer to its October 31st release date. We tested again in Albuquerque, New Mexico last week (where I did, in fact, make a left turn I knew I shouldn't have made), and scored almost exactly the same as we did in the Kansas City test screening the month before - which is to say really, really well. A poster and a theatrical trailer should be making their way to theaters soon (the online teaser we posted a few weeks back met with an early demise). In the meantime, here's another image to hold you over...

-------

I'll be in attendance at San Diego yet again this year, and it'll be a pretty busy Con for me: as of right now, I'll be doing four panels.

The big panel, the one I do every year, will happen Friday night from 6:30 to 8pm (right after the Entertainment Weekly panel I'll also be a part of). Naturally, there'll be a "Zack and Miri" slant to the appearance so I'm sure we'll rock a clip or two. Hopefully, we'll also have some special guests for you as well.

And, please - let's not have a repeat of this...

East coasters! Don't think for a minute that you're forgotten. There are two upcoming shindigs you can come out for...

First up, there's the next Secret Stash Hold 'Em McNeil Poker Tourney on Saturday, July 12th. Interested parties looking to secure a seat and take home some green should send those emails to donkey@viewaskew.com.

Here's a pic of the "winners" (I use that term losely; I mean, fucking look at us...) from the last game.

Then, later in the fall, on November 7th, c'mon down to the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank for my third hometown Q&A...

Last year's show was shot for the next "Evening with Kevin Smith" DVD (due in stores this October). This time, there won't be any cameras getting in our way, as we shoot the shit for five-plus hours. Ticket info can be found here.

-------

See how wide my face looks in that poker pic? I put on a shitload of weight during the "Zack and Miri" shoot and have only just recently started to take it off. Been on a diet for the last four weeks and have already dropped twenty five pounds, with many, many more tons to go. By the "Zack and Miri" premiere in October, I hope to look almost human again.

-------

And don't forget: tonight there's a brand new...

SModcast, an ongoing conversation between me and Scott Mosier, is now online and available only at QuickStopEntertainment.com (and via iTunes a week later). Get that shit right here! Why the fuck not? It's free.

Wanna get teased?

Tonight's the night.

At midnight west coast time, we take the "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" teaser live, only at www.quickstopentertainment.com.

Don't call it a trailer, 'cause it's not a trailer; it's a teaser. There ain't a frame of footage in this puppy that's in the actual flick, so feel free to watch it without fear of "spoilers". This is just a little something to give you a bit of a feel for the flick.

Hey, asshole! I don’t wanna be your fucking human pet.

And I don't wanna take your stupid fucking movie quiz, either. Can you stop shitting spam all over my comments section? Fuck.

Anyone else getting these? How fucking annoying are they, right? Christ.

Anyway, long time, no update. I owe you, so here's a new pic from the flick...

Been knee-deep in "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" type stuff, preparing for our first official test screening on Tuesday night (somewhere in the midwest). The flick's current running time is 1:45, so we'll see if putting it in front of an audience sheds light on any further possible cuts. Fingers crossed the flick plays great.

Thursday night, I'll be in Jersey for another poker tourney at Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash. There are about five seats left, if you're on the east coast and feel like rolling cards with us May 15th at 8p.m. Interested parties should drop a line to donkey@viewaskew.com

When I get back from the trip back east, I think I'll be ready to post the first internet-only "Zack and Miri" teaser. I'll let you know when it goes live at www.quickstopentertainment.com (home of SModcast).

I'll be at San Diego for ComiCon yet again this summer. More details when I know 'em (but figure a Friday night panel in the big room).

Anyone remember the Crazy for Cult art show Scott and I hosted last summer at Gallery 1988 on Melrose, here in Los Angeles? Remember how awesome that turned out? Well Jensen, Scott and I are doing it again this August...

Trust me: you'll love it.

And that's about it, for the time being. I'll check back after the test screening to let you know how we did, as well as hip you to the 'net teaser.

SModcast Returns!

SModcast 45: The End of the SMod-fast

In which our heroes finally appease the hunger with chatter about where they’ve been, what they’d do if they were "Lost", and how they ride their mellow.

Stop reading this and download that shit right now, then come back and let me know what you think.

Brought to you by Kevin, Scott, and the good folks at...

(iTunes users: due to the slow downloading, we’ve decided to stagger the SModcast release. So while SModcast 38 is available right now at www.quickstopentertainment.com, it won’t be available on iTunes ’til Friday.)

Making Porno, Pt. 2: Climax

It’s been a long time since the last update, I realize; over two months, to be precise. My apologies for that and the total lack of SModcast during that period. I was preoccupied. Rest assured, SModcast will return the moment the recording gear gets back to L.A.

Around two in the morning Wednesday, we wrapped "Zack and Miri Make a Porno". Poetically, it snowed right before we rolled for the last time... just after we’d laid a bunch of fake white stuff for an exterior shot at Zack’s job. It nicely summed up the uncooperative nature of the weather we’d grown accustomed to over the course of the production.

Banks did her last scene the night before, so Tuesday became a countdown of "production wraps" (when you check the gate after an actor’s/actresses’ last shot, and if it’s good, you announce their work completion on the show to much applause). First, it was Katie. Then, Mewes. Then Ricky. Then Seth. Then Traci. Then, we moved outside, and Craig and Jeff shot the only dialogue scene we had left to shoot. And with that, the last of our amazing cast was gone, leaving us with merely two establishing shots of a building before we had to say goodbye.

The crew was wonderful. Aside from working with people I’ve worked beside on almost every show, I got to work with people I hadn’t worked with since "Dogma" in ’98. There wasn’t a weak link in the bunch.

Monroeville/Pittsburgh (and all the surrounding towns we also shot in, like McKeesport, McKee’s Rocks, Hazelwood, the Southside, etc.) were so kind and welcoming. Thanks to everyone we may have inconvenienced while in your backyards.

Some folks have asked why I’ve been so stingy with the details on this flick, as opposed to flicks we’ve made in the past, during which I was blogging and posting pics galore. There’s no conspiracy behind it, really; I just wanna try something different this time. I want folks to discover the flick for themselves, instead of me jamming it down their throats. I’m also gonna try to keep from over-selling it with hyperbole and absolutes. I’ll let you guys apply those (good or bad) when the time comes. Just know that we had a problem-free, productive shoot in which everyone was firing on all cylinders and the result was THE FUNNIEST FUCKING MOVIE WE’VE EVER MADE!!!

* ahem *

No more hyperbole starting from this point on, I meant.

I spent all of Wednesday traveling and got to sleep in my own bed last night. When I woke up, I instinctively bolted for the shower, fearing I was gonna be late for call time. When I remembered that not only were we done, but that I was over two thousand miles away from our equipment and locales, I smiled and did the next best thing: took a shit on my own toilet.

Can’t wait to share it with you.

The movie, not the shit.
