Breakdown in Bourbon, Missouri
Current mood: sore
Category: Music
Ok, so being a touring band we have broken down before, it just comes with the territory. We've broken down in the mountains of Colorado, Summercamp, the New Jersey Turnpike, Schwagstock near Salem, Missouri, and now we get to add another one to that list: Bourbon, Missouri, pop 1,300. Last thursday we were on our way to a 2 night stand in Springfield, MO when our ball bearings in our left front tire welded themselves to the spindle. (I don't know either).

In some amazing strokes of good luck, we found ourselves at an exit with a gas station, repair shop, bar, and cheap hotel. Within an hour of breaking down we were towed and checking into a hotel, unfortunately having to forego the show in Springfield. It just wasn't possible.
It's odd to be in a hotel room when your body is gearing up for show-mode, it's not like AFTER the show when you're ready to crash. So we found ourselves guitars in hand working on some new music. We picked up some beer and pizzas, and although we hated to miss the concert, we were very excited to be able to watch the season 4 finale of The Office (love it).
So the next morning, we talk to the nice old lady running the hotel, we explain our predicament and that we have a ride coming in the afternoon (see below), and ask if we can hang out for a little. She says fine. So we try and go back to sleep. I'm just drifting off when the hotel phone rings (i hate that sound almost as much as the sound of an alarm clock on a tv commercial!) It's a guy who is obviously now in charge and in broken english he tells me someone has reserved that room and we have 15 min to get out. Reserved the room? Seriously? we're in the middle of nowhere and we're the only vehicle in the parking lot. Actually, we didn't even have a vehicle. So, pillows, bags, laptop, and guitars in hand we wander next door to the bar. Luckily, The Bourbon Bar and Grill was open (and with customers, at 11:30am) and they had food. So, we drop our bags outside, and walk in with guitars, computer, and iPods.

I'll skip the awkwardness of being out-of-place in an out-of-the way bar trying to answer questions about our music and anything else. They were nice and sweet people, it was just an interesting place to kill 3-4 hours.
So earlier in the morning, we talked to the repair shop, they need parts, the van won't be ready until Tuesday. Luckily, our wonderfull, generous, and delightful friend Lexi from Springfield, Missouri comes and picks up dave on her way to see Wilco in St. Louis, she takes him to another town to rent a uhaul (the (second) show must go on!).
Meanwhile, me, Kev, and Josh are hanging at the Bourbon Bar and Grill hoping that all 4 of us might be able to squeeze into the uhaul dave brings back. No such luck, the uhaul has 2 bucket seats. Well, we were pretty much out of options, so...

Kevin and I man up and hop in back for the 2 hours drive to the Patton Alley Pub in Springfield, MO. It's about as awful as you would imagine. There's really no light, it's pretty loud, and there's the fear of gear falling on you. If there was light you could see everything is secured, but in the dark...

(this pic was actually with the light on). I tried to play a guitar but couldn't hear it over the road, so i I laid down some pillows and blankets and tried to fall asleep. i was mildly successfull.
So over 30 hours from when we left home, we finally pull into the Patton Alley Pub. We hired Zacc Martin and Isaac for lights and sound, and were happy to see they were set up and ready to rock. My burger and salad were amazing, as always. As we started to eat someone spoke up and we all acknoledged we'd been craving that meal since we left home the day before. 2 meals in a row from the bar made even Subway seem like dining out. The show was a blast, rocking crowd, and we had a lot of pent up energy to burn! Our good friends Speakeasy drove 14 hours home from North Carolina and made it out to the show. Shawn tore it up on Illuminator, the whole room (the station included) loved it! Thanks for everyone who made it out on friday, and our apologies go out for having to miss the show on thursday, we were just too busy eating frozen pizza and watching movies at the Budget Inn in Bourbon.
So now we have a 5 and a half hour drive home... I drove from 2:30-6am with Kev in shotgun. I felt terrible knowing my brothers were in the sensory deprivation box truck in the back, but we had to get home. i was just hoping they were able to pass out (they were not). Around 6am we dropped off Kev in Glen Carbon, Josh took the wheel, Dave in shotgun, and i hoped into the back for my second shift. I spread my blankets and pillows out again and watched High Fidelity on my iPod for the last leg back home.
I think the most interesting part of this whole story was my reaction to it. To be a band that's broken down on the road is a REALLY frustrating situation. You're thinking about all the work that went into the show you're about to miss, the money that will be lost, the cost of the repairs, uhaul, food, hotel, etc. But throughout this whole situation, i just found myself laughing and laughing and laughing, and taking pics with my phone. I'm still laughing about it all. I love the fact that the i love my band and the music we play so much that it always outweighs the tough things that come along with this life. I'm still laughing.
