Release date: 1998-02-10
For fans of New Orleans soul and funk, Betty Harris, "the Lost Soul Queen of New Orleans," needs no introduction. She's the voice behind "Break in the Road," one of the heaviest slices of any music ever recorded, as well as dance floor burner "Mean Man," the classic tearjerker "Cry to Me," and many more.
The Sweet Divines will be humbly opening the show with their own set before Betty and her band take the stage at Maxwell's this Friday, August 22.
Friday 22 August 2008 Maxwell's 1039 Washington St. Hoboken, NJ with BETTY HARRIS 9 PM, $15
On Sunday, August 10, we'll be making our debut at the renowned Zipper Factory on 37th Street, opening for the cult caburlesque hit LADY RIZO AND THE ASSETTES! Lady Rizo and her ladies put on an amazing show that is as musical as it is funny, and as funny as it is hot! (And it is hot!)
The Zipper Factory is great space, decked out with theater-style seating, a bar, and a top-notch restaurant right next door. Take your honey and make a night of it!
Lady Rizo is a popular act, so get on the stick and get your tix!
The once-in-a-lifetime double bill of Maxine Brown and Baby Washington happens one week from Saturday. Tickets are limited, so get them before they're gone!
Saturday, June 7, 2008 7:00 P.M Legendary ladies of soul MAXINE BROWN and BABY WASHINGTON Backed by the Divine Soul Rhythm Band Guest vocals by the Sweet Divines At JOE'S PUB, 425 Lafayette St., NYC
"Two iconic voices from the heyday of soul and R&B perform together on a double bill for the first time. These artists, both born in South Carolina and raised in New York City, may be less familiar than their more mainstream contemporaries, but have had an immeasurable -- and largely overlooked -- impact on American soul...."
In May 2007, Mike Long of Hamilton, Ontario decided he would dance to a different song by a different artist every day for 366 straight days, and he did.
This Thursday: The Sweet Divines and band will be at Lower East Side "it" venue THE BOX, doing a mini-set as special guests of the CRACKED SOCIETY REVUE.
Hosted by THE LITTLE DEATH, (NYC rock n roll act that doubles as MOBY's backing band and also features him on bass), the Cracked Society Revue is described as "a night of nasty blues, libidinous Euro-trash, bad behavior, liquor soaked floors, & several reasons to avoid looking in the mirror the next morning."
Ticket prices are appropriately decadent at $25 for general admission ($50 table tickets are sold out!), and you can find them at TicketWeb.
So if you have a little cash to burn and feel like getting fancy in a trashy sorta way (or vice versa), come out and represent!
THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2008 "THE CRACKED SOCIETY REVUE" at The Box, 189 Chrystie Street, NYC Featuring: Rene Risque and The Little Death Special Guests: Lady Rizo and THE SWEET DIVINES Doors at 8 Sweet Divines from 9:15-9:30 (sharp!)
We just can't keep it a surprise any longer! Tomorrow night's All Night Brooklyn Soul Party will feature a guest appearance from legendary soul singer MAXINE BROWN!
Maxine (and her wheelbarrow's worth of charisma) will be joining the Sweet Divines for one number - a tune she hasn't performed since it was originally recorded in 1969.
She will also be making a special announcement regarding an exciting event on the horizon....
This will be a rare treat for lovers of old-school soul. Or music in general. Or life in general.
Last Thursday night, the Sweet Divines took part in the already legendary Music Snobbery 3rd Anniversary Party at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. If you missed it, check out Ashley, Heather, and Jennie's cameos with Salt & Samovar and Moby on YouTube. (Absolutely no alchohol was abused in the making of these videos.)
