From the pool to the Phelt

From the pool to the Phelt

In case you've been in entombed in an underground bunker (or stuck in poker game) for the past few months, you may have missed what happened at the Olympics this year. A young man named Michael Phelps won a record eight gold medals to go with the six he already had. So what does a single 23 year old guy do to celebrate an achievement like that? He comes to Vegas naturally.

My good friend Mike Bertolini and Phelps have a mutual friend who let Mike know he wanted to come out, so Mike hooked him up with the Maloof brothers. They didn't disappoint, setting him up in the two story basketball suite at the Palms; over 10,000 square feet huge. It's called the basketball suite because it has a giant basketball court right there in the suite, along with two bedrooms and three Murphy beds that pulled out of walls on the basket ball court. This monster will (and did both nights) hold up to 300 people!

And with an entourage of 40 or 50 he needed every sleeping space possible. Phelps brought all his friends from high school, college and swimming. What a pal! He created a weekend none of them will ever forget. (And neither will I)

Phelps also had one request for my friend Mike; He wanted to meet some famous poker players! That's where I came in. Mike called me and asked me to bring some big names to meet Phelps. Along with myself I brought Jennifer and Marco Traniello, Hoyt Corkins, Daniel Negreanu and his favorite player (sadly that wasn't me L) My pops, Doyle Brunson..

The first night we had dinner at my favorite restaurant, Nine steak house. We took over about half of the joint for our four hour long dinner. Chef Barry really out did himself with more courses (and drinks) than I could count.

After dinner we needed to burn off some of that food so we hit the court up in his suite. Drunken basketball is the second best. The best? A drunken poker tournament which we also had up in his suite (Of course I won J).

Next we decided to hit the gaming tables. Phelps and I both like roulette so we tag teamed a table and crushed it. I won over a hundred bucks and Michael almost a grand! We sensed the Maloofs were getting nervous so not wanting to seem ungrateful to our hosts we gave them a break and quit playing. A few more drinks and I crawled up to my room to hibernate for about 12 hours.

When I came down for dinner at Nove Michael was already at the bar in full swing. He immediately ordered me a Belvedere Martini and had it in my hand before I could explain to him I think I'd already consumed my alcohol intake for the weekend. He then started making fun of one of his friends for not drinking.

His friend seemed to take great offense to this and ordered us three tequila shots. While I was busy looking around for a bucket in case I puked my cousin Ken came up to the bar. He and Phelps got into a conversation about whiskey and Ken orders Michael a double shot of Jack Daniels single barrel which didn't last long.

"Jesus Christ!" I think to myself. This guy was drinking some sort of mixed drink when I got here, then the tequila then the Whiskey, all in under five minutes! If all this wasn't enough he then asked me why I wasn't at the pool during the day. Apparently while I was lying in bed recuperating he and his friends had been at the pool since 9 am. And they weren't out there training either.

I figured this was just an anomaly but he told me he and his friends would drink as much as three times a week, even during training. He only quit for a month before the Olympics! Ah, to be 23 again… I'm sure being in the shape he's in doesn't hurt either. As much as he drank I never heard him slur a word or seem the least bit impaired.

Michael also has the best attitude of any celebrity I've ever been around. My friend Lenny brought his 11 year old son (My Godson), who is a huge fan, down to meet Michael and he was gracious enough to chat with him over 20 minutes about swimming and sign posters and take many pictures. In fact, over the weekend I was with him he must have literally taken 500 pictures with fans. Not only did he never say no to a pic, he was totally into each and every one of them. He would hug the fan or hold his arms up with his giant child like smile that makes the camera love him so much.

You can really tell he's on cloud nine, enjoying his celebrity and everything that comes with it. "It's like I'm in a dream" he told me over dinner. With 14 gold medals and an estimated 50 to 100 million dollars in endorsements coming his way I guess it's a pretty nice dream at that, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy… Well, except maybe me.

When you're the only son of a father who is perhaps the most famous poker player in the world, most people assume you were born with aces in your hands and playing five-card draw before you could spell Little League.

But when Todd Brunson was a kid, he had a problematical time following in his father's footsteps. He never saw his dad, Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson, ply his trade at his night job.

"You don't play high-limit poker at home," Todd said. "You don't carry millions of dollars around from house to house. He played at the casinos and never brought his work home with him."

But the chip doesn't fall far from the stack.

The younger Brunson, now 37, finally caught the poker bug when he went off to college to become a lawyer. Like his father had done before him, the younger Brunson then worked his way up the ranks one hand at a time.

FIND MORE STORIES IN: Las Vegas | Doyle Brunson | High-low

Despite expectations that were bound to exceed accomplishments, Brunson isn't all name with no game. Similar in stature to his father — both are heavyset men with giant personalities — the man who didn't play poker as a kid has won millions on the felt just like his 73-year-old pop.

For years, the two have played in the world's biggest cash games and have been forces in any tournament they play — including the World Series of Poker. When Todd won his WSOP bracelet in Omaha High-Low in 2005, the Brunsons became the first father-son combination to take home WSOP jewelry. His father won the first of his record-tying 10 in 1976, a cache that includes back-to-back Main Event championships in 1976-77.

Todd also contributed to his father's book, Super System 2 (the 2005 sequel to Doyle's revolutionary poker book Super/System), writing the "Seven-card stud high-low eight-or-better" section.

"When I finally started playing on a regular basis, I loved the challenge of the game," Todd said. "In my third year in college, I made the decision to go to Las Vegas. Of course there were doubts — I'll let you know when I'm over them — but I know I made the right decision."

Separate routes

Doyle and Louise Brunson, married 45 years now, never saw their son's career choice coming. Todd rarely played cards — the family only played rummy at home — and was a good athlete and a debate champion in high school. They saw their son earning a living behind a desk instead of at a poker table.

"Oh my gosh, I never thought he'd ever be a poker player. His heart's desire was to be a trial attorney," his mother said. "All mothers want their kids to earn a degree, and that's what he was doing. We didn't even know Todd was playing poker. Doyle never brought cards home. But Todd entered a tournament unbeknownst to us, and he won about $300,000.

"Needless to say, he didn't go back to college."

Doyle didn't encourage his son to play poker, either.

An accomplished athlete who attracted the attention of the NBA's Minneapolis Lakers, Doyle was attending Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, on a basketball and track scholarship when he shattered his knee in a factory accident. Though he would earn a master's degree in administrative education, his love of poker lured him away from the classroom and to the tables, where he became an old-school rounder in the 1950s and 1960s.

Traveling with legendary players Johnny Moss and "Amarillo Slim" Preston in search of games, Doyle earned another master's degree in life on the streets. He can rattle off anecdotes as easily as he can shuffle a deck of cards, tales of hijackings, cheats, arrests and shotguns pointed at his skull. A section of north Fort Worth — where thieves, robbers and killings were commonplace and the best poker game in 10 counties was a regular occurrence — was known as "Bloodthirsty Highway."

"I never wanted him to be a poker player because I had such a tough life," Doyle said. "It isn't as glamorous as people think it is. I had a lot of pitfalls along the way, and I didn't want him to go through that. But part of me was pleased when he wanted to try it, I have to admit that. His mom certainly didn't like it, so I had to pretend to be upset. I didn't know if he had the tools to be a top playe, but I saw immediately when I watched him play in the card clubs that he could be a top player."

Different styles

Todd got to the top learning the game with each fresh deal instead of seeking dad's counsel about the ABCs of poker.

"He asked me a few questions, but there are no definitive answers because every poker situation is different. You learn by playing," Doyle said. "I think Todd is one of the top five players in the world. He would have been a great lawyer, too. He is very dogmatic. I kid him all the time when I tell him that he's never lost an argument in 37 years."

Todd can't say the same thing about the head-to-head battles with his father. While both take pleasure in each other's company, they certainly don't like sitting at the same poker table together.

"I'm more of an instinctive player, and he's more fundamentally sound than I am. Either way is OK," Doyle said. "He never makes a mistake about the position and the correct way to play hands. He almost always knows exactly the way he's going to play hands. I kind of play by impulse.

"But I don't like it. No matter what some people say, it's impossible not to be biased when your son is sitting at the table. When it's your flesh and blood sitting there, it's a lot different.

"And people know that when we get into a pot together we usually have good hands, so they go out, so that hurts. In a tournament, it's different. I always tell him that if he breaks me, don't worry about it. It's part of the game. But I kid him all the time and tell him that I tend to be easier on him than he is on me."

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act

When will the United States Government stop trying to force the morals of the few on the American general public? It didn't work in the last century with prohibition and it won't work in this one with The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Does the Government plan to throw one hundred million Americans in jail?

The purpose of the Federal Government is supposed to be to protect the rights of Americans, not take them away! When these small minded Congressmen couldn't get the bill thru by its self the proper, legal way, they attached it to a popular defense bill to increase port security. What does Internet gaming have to do with port security? What a cheap, slimy move!
What happens when a law is passed no one will obey? Well guys, nice move. You've turned one third of the nation into criminals overnight!!!
Legalize it, regulate it and tax it!!!

High Stakes Poker
Current mood: cheerful
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

Howdy all

We just filmed High stakes pokers third season. I don't wanna ruin it but I was very happy with the outcome, probably the happiest of all the players!. Unfortunately, there were so many players this year most of us only drew half a day of play, which will be edited into around 3 or 4 episodes. Mine will be the final episodes.

The side games have been great also and now with Sammy in town it's totally off the hook. The games haven't been starting til like midnight which is fine with me as I'm nocturnal. I wanna play tonight , I won big last night but I have to play the big event at the Bellagio tomorrow so I better get some sleep. Anyway, their will be plaenty of time for side games later.

       Good Luck

Todd

New Account

Hi

This is my first post, I just set up my account on Myspace today at the constant urging of friends. I'm currently in Vegas trying to decide if I want to go to the bike poker tourney in La tomorrow or not.

I'd rather go up to Montana and get the hell out of this heat! My brand new hot tub and Cobalt speed boat, both which have never been used, are sitting up there waiting for me at my house on flathead lake. I'm usually up there by now but the wsop moving to July screwed up my schedule.

If I know you and you wanna come visit just call my cell. I have plenty of room.
