----------------- Clubplanet Hits the Road with Tommy Lee & DJ Aero
by Emily Tan 10.16.2007
/Long-time Clubplanet contributor, //DJ Times/ / journalist and //SIRIUS/ / Satellite Radio on-air host Emily Tan, gives readers a firsthand look at life on-the-road with Tommy Lee and DJ Aero as they journey across this continent and beyond on their Electro Mayhem DJ-tour./ Tommy Lee is not a "celebrity-DJ." Don't call him a "rockstar-who-DJs." Ok, I know what you're thinking, but before you judge, first humor a gal who's personally experienced Lee's "Electro Mayhem" DJ shows this summer with DJ and production partner, DJ Aero (Chester Deitz). Throwing caution to-the-wind, my spouse and I decided to pack our bags and head-out on-the-road to see for ourselves what all the commotion is about. I've never been a fan of Lee's former band, Motley Crue, and I don't watch network TV and never saw a single episode of "Rockstar Supernova." Frankly, I couldn't have cared less about all of Lee's celebrity trappings. I wanted to see how well he and Aero mixed, how tight their track-selection was, how technically proficient they were in responding to subtle changes in the room.
The first time I saw and heard Lee and Aero DJing live, it was during a two-hour live radio broadcast -- for which I was the on-air host -- on SIRIUS Satellite Radio's dance/progressive channel, "Area 33." There were only a handful of colleagues and staff present for this session, but the atmosphere was festive and I felt like going-out clubbing when it was over. (I was impressed that, in the chaotic minutes before going live on-the-air to an audience of potentially 14+ million listeners, Lee was most concerned with getting his two young sons and their nanny past building security and up to the studios. The man is a father, and it was sweet.) What struck me instantly was the dynamic of Lee and Aero, together, when performing live. Aero is the rock, the intensely focused DJ whom many regard as a foundation, while Lee is the explosive volcano of stage-presence. Side-by-side when they DJ, they whip-up such a whirlpool of energy that you can't help but get caught-up in the fun if you have any pulse at all. Fine, but how are their DJ skills in an actual club setting? At Room 960 in Hartford, we noticed a clean, well-dressed crowd. Although the abundance of hard-surfaces made the sound bounce-around in harsh angles and the venue itself was located in a mall, the promoter (Bora Celik) couldn't have been more gracious. The ladies pushing-up against the velvet ropes all had cameras in their hands, and they only stopped snapping when Lee got down from the booth and proceeded to pour Jagermeister into their mouths, straight from the bottle. I could swear Tommy had my beau, DJ Times' Jim Tremayne, chugging a few seconds longer than anyone else. The giant projection screen behind the booth was clutch, as Lee and Aero incorporate live visuals using the Pioneer DVJ-1000 in their sets.
Soon after, we caught Aero and Tommy DJing at Rebel, back home in New York, in Chelsea. I'd not been to Rebel until that point, and it was a younger crowd than I'm used to, as the promoters were focusing on their college-age lists. Rebel's not a posh club, and it was uncomfortably hot and humid that night, but the gig had everyone dancing and having a good time. The next night was the Friday of Labor Day weekend, and we were at Lee and Aero's party at self-proclaimed Southampton hot-spot, Stereo By The Shore (the Hamptons outpost of Manhattan's Stereo club). I'd only been back to this spot a few times since it was Tavern, and the venue looked prettier than ever. (I'm still mystified as to why the venue chooses to use billowy curtains in place of stalls, in the women's bathrooms.) The soundsystem was thumping, and Aero and Lee stirred-up a neat groove once they got started. A male patron nearly fell-over the banister trying to take a photo of the duo. Continuing onward, Guvernment in Toronto was, by the artists' own accounts, the "best show ever!" All seasoned clubbers worth their salt know that Guvernment is one of the leading venues in North America and the world. Buzzing from their set at Guvernment, Lee told me, "The Guv is, hands-down, the best place we've ever DJd! The production, sound, lights, video and cryo are un-f***-ing-real! Damn, they love to dance in Toronto." Aero echoed Lee's sentiment, and commented, "The Guv is like Tommy said, the sickest place to play. They really do it right, there. Our friend, Tahlal has the crowd right where they need to be. The moving DJ booth is awesome. Standing in the middle of the dancefloor is banging." Indeed, when all the elements of a night come together in perfect harmony, magic can happen. This was one of those nights. A few gigs after that -- there will have been in excess of 40 dates by the time their DJ-tour wraps for the season -- Aero and Lee touched-down at Bliss in nearby Clifton. Don't let the locale fool you: Bliss has a custom soundsystem installed, programmed and partially designed by Joe Lodi and Angelo Poulos of Advanced Audio Technology and boasts one of the country's first, complete club installs using Turbosound's Aspect series of club loudspeakers. Dougie Lazer of XS Lighting & Sound, Inc. installed and programmed the lighting, including custom Color Kinetics tiles, cascades, and fully-programmable, digital end-to-end LED "nodes." Walk into Bliss and it feels as though you stepped into a Miami, Las Vegas or Manhattan club. I've been to Bliss several times and the owners, Tommy D. and Kamel K., are good friends, but I'd never seen the club in this much of a frenzy. Aero commented of Bliss, "I have never heard a better-sounding DJ booth. Plenty of high and a lot of low- end. I wish the booth were bigger, so the crowd could come up and join us when we play; it sounds sick." Once again, the crowd at Bliss was heavily female (especially up front near the DJ booth), and camera-phones popped-up everywhere. I saw a woman scale the front wall of the DJ booth and actually reach the top and hang-over the side, nearly pulling-down the Plexiglass with her bodyweight, before busy bouncers carried her down. The energy was incredible, and Bliss was a very fun night. "Wow, Bliss was blissfully wicked," Lee told me after the show. "What a great club with an amazing vibe, sound, lights, cryo...and also video! Also, [owner] Tommy D. is a great guy to work with. I can't wait to get back there and rock those peeps!"
A few weeks later at the legendary venue, Rich's, in Houston, Jim and I notice that Tommy and Aero's skills have markedly improved. After all, the pair have been DJing together since 2000, and the summer had been a non-stop flurry of DJ-gig after DJ-gig. This night, the pair seemed very relaxed, and the atmosphere in the room was electric. Looking out over the sea of eager faces, with women predictably concentrated up front, I saw another lady scale the sizable facade of the booth in an attempt at getting Lee's attention. She, too, was soon helped-down by security. I thought to myself, Hmm, there's a pattern forming here! I've seen women do crazy things to try to get close to Paul Van Dyk or Roger Sanchez while they DJd, but females around Lee just seem to be manic. The poor guy can't walk down the street or have a meal in a restaurant without being accosted. (Tiesto or Paul Oakenfold, on the other hand, can walk down a busy street in Times Square and not be bothered.) After shows in late-October at Utopia in Costa Rica and Mansion in Miami, Lee and Aero will be taking some time-off from gigging to focus on their original studio productions, due for release in late-November/early-December and available on Beatport.com. The releases will be the first for Aero and Lee as electronic music producers, and it signals a new phase in the couple's progress in the arena of electronic dance music. One thing that's for certain is that Lee and Aero will have a definite presence at WMC in March; watch this space for more announcements. Speaking about the tour overall, Aero notes, "This tour has been great. Tommy and I have really gotten into a groove. Playing multiple shows each week have taught us valuable lessons in keeping our sets fresh. Being on a tour bus and not having to fly is also great. I would also have to say that Canada is a place I want to play [again], sooner [rather] than later. The people put away their cell cameras and dance."
