I Guess I'm Back

Welll it seems as though I've returned from my long wandering in
the desert of unemployment and subsequent underemployment. It's
been a hell of a struggle, throughout I definately felt the money
crunch, and had more than a few sleeplessness and inability to
easily pay the rent.

Such a sad state of affairs we live with on a daily basis. While
unemployed I was working at a work for a day temp agency. I've
never really been a large part of the homeless community so it was
all quite new to see. I would wake up at 4 am to head down to the
office, I was one of the ones lucky enough to have a vehicle. A line
of people stretched around the corner waiting to be let in to sign up
for any available minimum wage positions available. Many of the
people there were from half-way houses or generally homeless. On
a one occasion the iconic image of the guy sitting on the stoop
outside drinking from a water bottle filled with vodka   and speaking
 of the exquisite meal of his dreams struck me. Or the group of guys
 standing around shooting dice at the side of the building. Anything
to take the mind away from the large stretch of time most of us waited.

As for the work the term wage slave was never more apt. I worked
 a range of positions from a fish warehouse, landscaping, to
retirement homes. The worst by far was as expected the dreaded
waste management. Now to be fair the day I worked was the
hottest day of the summer, and it had rained the night before. I just
wasn't cut out for the grueling labor, holding onto the side of a truck
 with the last ouncee of strength, and the picturesque image of a
garbage can filled with maggots. Needless to say I did not very well
belong and the rather tiny paychecks doled out at the end of the day
 were still not enough for rent and food.

As the weeks went on I eventually landed a job working at a office
in the area. Yes I had become a Girl Scout. A humble little office
that proved a bit more insideous than I could have imagined. A part
time worker, one dollar above the minimum wage still struggling to
make my rent. Only two weeks in and my supervisor was out for a
surgery on her vocal chords. I had not had much training, though
luckily a monkey could perform most of my tasks. I worked in a
print/mail room. Rushedly pushing out books and flyers, training
and recruitment. Putting postage on the mail ordering supplies for
the office. All the while trying to finish my labor ahead of schedule
so I could sneak a few moments of google video, a simple flash
game, or a few moments scanning my rss feeds for news.

Now mind you throughout this time I was a part-time worker, for
nearly a month in my introductory 90 days, I was working forty
hours a week, I had no benefits or hope thereof. Upon return my
supervisor found nothing but fault with me. A woman who used to
be a chemistry major but left to have children. She was beyond the
scope of arrogance in her need for control. I found that to this day
I've never heard her say a nice thing about me wiithout a common
post-script of the word "but". My internet usage was a problem to
her, as well as my insistance on doing things the way I found them
easiest. Wars were raged on those days, the whole experience ended
 up quite trying as my will refused to be broken.

Management became involved as I was sure this was abusive
behavior for a manager. Little came from this in the end, though I
did get most of the constant complaints sent to my work email
instead of verbalized. My hours by this point were drastically cut
and the constant pressure had led me to take on a rather strenuous
job search. For months I spplied to anywhere between 3 and 10
psychology jobs a week. It had become a second job in and of
itself. I'd wake up at 7 or 8 sepnd three hours job searching and
applying, adapting my materials to fit my notions of the needs of the
 position, and then head back to the office just hoing that the day
would just go by.

I can't very well describe the sense of desperation upon those dark
days. The panic of attempting to pay the bills, and struggling with
self-worth and the need to numb out. It is always hardest when one
goes through such times to find help. It seems the way things are is
that prevention is the least of societies worries. The limited funds
for social programs and free clinics is disgraceful. During this period
 I had begun to feel a bit despondant, I felt denied the intellectual
realm which I belonged to for so many years as a philosophy and
psychology student. I wondered what kind of a world we were
building as more and more theoretical sciences are discredited for
the sheer notion of capitalistic utility and a war waged against the religous right.

After my ninty day trial period, I had found that I had been lied to
all along. I was told when I started that wage increases were
negotiated at the review. In fact not only had the wage increase
been denied, they wanted me to undergo another ninety day trial
period. By this time they had already disabled the sound on my
comuter and put up some pathetic barriers to stop me from visiting
certain sites. This was not a system from which appeal and
adaptation had any place. The problem with a stringent unmoving
system of control is that it forces the employee to take matters into
their own hands. It forces the employee to work around the system
and find ways to cheat the system. It's the base mentality of the
hacker, not willing to sacrifice the self for authority that never
makes informed decisions. I had found ways around site blocks and
 sound issues as well as adaptations of the way I worked which
could not be detected.

This brings us to a bti over a week ago when  my car was hit while
I was driving to work a fitting enough sign that change was on its
way. My poor truck now sits at an insurance company garage,
totaled as I await the settlement claim which will determine my next
vehicle purchase. At current they've set me up with a rental which
has been nice. A few days after the accident I finally received a call
back from an employer I had been following up with for several weeks.

So I'm off to be a Substance abuse Counselor it seems, I have one
week left of drudgery at my current position. I wonder how many
believers in psychadelic shamanism end up in the substance abuse
field. In some ways it seems apt that one such as myself could help
a great deal in recovery. After all I have healed myself of things
such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks and such. I've seen
heroin, coke, and crack addicts first hand. I even experienced
schizophrenia throughout my journey. This seems like the right step
 for my future, finally a position that will pay me at least enough to
get by and give me full benefits, and hopefully treat me as a man
with education and experience worthy of a voice.

So after this rather long story I hope you can see why I've been
away and welcome me back to these communitie at large. I'll try to
throw some interesting material your way in the weeks to come. It's
 good to be back, though a part of me is still afraid that it's all an
illusion, I still ahve the occassional nightmare. I'm busy trying to
prepare myself for what is to come. I hope you're all well out there
and I'll see you on the other side of this new day.

Well my new little project is finally on its way. Please spread the word if you know anyone who would be interested. I'm also looking for any feedback people may be able to give me.

The project is a sociological experiment, an examination of culture through ephemeral historical film archives. The first post is titled Childhood and comprises a group of 18 films all related to children from Health, Emotional Control, Safety, Education, Rules, Manners, ect.

Throughout the series I'll be covering a wide range of subjects, from puberty, through adolescence, then off to marriage and the work world, and a surreal examination of the consumer, drugs, war, religion, and a range of topics yet to be decided.

The name is Ephememe, which is short for Ephemeral Memetic Redeux. The format is still in its infancy, so I can really use feedback. So far I've tried to go really simple just displaying the videos and the titles. I'm trying to remain as politically unbiased as possible in this endeavor. I really want everyone to make their own conclusions.
