Voxxy Vallejo now scheduling auditions

Voxxy Vallejo is a newly established band in the Tacoma area. We have been playing live at various venues for the past year and as we approach the release of our debut CD we are looking to add a second guitarist/keyboardist. Our live shows (35ish to date not including close to as many open mics) have been acoustic driven this past year but our CD is fully loaded so we are looking for a versatile musician who can help us add the extras we need to take our live show to the next level. Preference is for a second guitarist…mostly rhythm but some lead as well, who can also play keys and if you play harmonica… that would fit in well too. Back up vocals would cinch the deal for sure. If you have a combination of any of these skills (or others I haven't thought of….c'mon show me what you got???) and a passion for what we are already doing…..are willing to learn what we need from you now…..and be a part of the *writing process for the next album(* although not required), then please contact us for an audition. We believe that we have a bright future and hope that you would visit our site, listen to our music, watch our videos, read our reviews, and if you feel a connection with what we are doing (which is constantly evolving) then please schedule an audition. Our sound is pretty diverse. But there is a constant in the realm of Rock with a Blues and Southern Rock infrastructure. The only thing we try to accomplish with our sound is a desire to not stay within any specific genre, but keep pushing it someplace new. We need you to be skilled enough to pick up our current material  without  us having to spend too much time teaching it to you, but that you will listen and practice on your own time as well. Our basic weekly schedule is:

One night for a set rehearsal (set is practiced twice and we can also focus on any weak areas)

One night for an open mic performance,

we will also have one session just for writing/jamming.

When we have gigs we usually drop the open mic in favor of an extra practice session.

Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday are our typical band nights from about 6:30-9pm and occasionally we will all get together on a Saturday. If we go to an open mic show it can and usually does wind up going a little later.

We need commitment, dedication and talent. And we need it ASAP!

We have a lot of fun but we work hard and are serious about this project. If interested please contact us through myspace or @ VoxxyVallejo@yahoo.com

The band's current line up is:

Gene Vallejo- Lead Guitar (multi instrumentalist) and Vocals (also produces and mixes our recordings) songwriter

Voxxy- Lead vocalist songwriter

Markal Harris- Acoustic Percussions

Ratman- Bass

Steve Albert- Drums/percussion

Album Progress
Current mood: anxious

Album Progress

OK OKAY!!!!

When we first started this project a year ago….the plan was to have our album finished by Dec 07. After all…we had our first 6 tracks done in 3 months. Of course no one was having to rehearse or play live at the time because I was still out of state. And when we started doing all of that, we had way less time (and energy) for studio work. So then we said April of 08. HAHA!

Anyway for those of you still waiting…..we are just as anxious, but when you are handling EVERY aspect of an album creation except the packaging, AND playing live regularly as well as the learning curve and process of expanding our band.  Well….it was more than we considered when it came to anticipating the release of our CD. I can't even tell you now, when it will be ready. We are just about a song and a half away from finished….which shouldn't take too long…..except we have a few shows coming up which takes time away out of the studio again.

For those interested….We are putting up another clip (2nd verse and instrumental) from a finished track off the album called "Our Song"

And here are the songs you can expect on our CD….though not necessarily in this order:

Lovin Thang

Bad Woman Blues

Gone Again

Moonshine Maker

Set Me Free

Crow

Rock On

Fill Me Up

Black River

So Damn Hard

Take Me For A Ride

Leave Em Cryin

Our Song

Event:5th Annual Plogfest 2008
When:Sat. Aug 9th, 2008
Time:12 PM – 12 AM   *Once 12 AM rolls around, if you are not camping, then you must leave the venue.
Where: 8110 266th E.
                Graham, WA 98338

Description:Saturday August 9th, 2008 from noon-midnight is the 5th Annual Plogfest located at an outside venue in Graham, WA.  Music played by your local bands will be featured all day long, along with a full-service grilling area for BBQ, bathroom facilities, bon fire, volleyball, horseshoes, and other games to keep both kids and adults entertained.  Last year's attendance was approximately 80 people.  This year's event will be well over that amount and the biggest Plogfest since its start only five years ago.  People are allowed to pitch a tent in the large field area for spending the night.  Due to this being an all age's event, all consumption of alcoholic beverages will be strictly enforced and no minors will be served.  A merchandise table will be available for purchasing CD's, T-shirts, and other swag from all of the bands.  If you're interested in attending, please e-mail us back at mismatchtheband@yahoo.comor
mismatch253@yahoo.com. Tickets will be available at the door.

We will Supply…B.B.Q's for cooking, condiments, paper plates, plastic silverware, and on-site cooks.
You need to Bring…Meat & buns for grilling, potluck style sides & salads, drinks (21 & over B.Y.O.B), ice, something to sit on.

*Your $10 entrance fee is to cover to the cost of renting the Honey Buckets, freezer, refrigerator, building the stage, electricity, liquor license, items mentioned above, and other miscellaneous costs.  For seeing 10 bands, $10 is a great deal.  Food costs would have added up fast, so we ask that everyone bring something to go around i.e. box of burger patties, hot dog buns, ice, beer, etc.

*If you bring a keg, then you get in free. Who's going to take us up on this offer…? Still waiting…JWe currently have several kegs, but once they are gone, then that's it.. So, please B.Y.O.B.
Camping:Bring your tents and sleeping bags for spending the night.  There are Honey Bucket's available by the tent area.  Make sure to bring flashlights and/or headlamps for walking around the tents at night.  I'd recommend to set-up your tents earlier on in the day instead of later when it is dark.

***Camping is strongly recommended for those who are drinking and do not have a DD. Please be smart about alcohol consumption at Plogfest 2008.  Graham PD is well aware of the event and will not hesitate to take action against those abusing alcohol.  Let's all look out for one another's safety.  Hot weather = drink plenty of water.

Featured Artists (in no particular order):Voxxy Vallejo, David Hannon, All The Hellbound, Kurt Lindsay, Mismatch, Rong, Deborah Page, Goddamage, Angela Jossy, and Black Stone.  This year's line-up is featuring 10 bands of different genres from the Pacific Northwest.  The line-up is designed much like Warped Tours line-up where there is no headliner act.  Instead, all the bands are equally important and are scattered randomly throughout the day.  Come support your local music scene for a day that truly is all about the bands and having fun in the hot summer sun.  You don't want to miss this event.

One year….

In One Year we have put together a 2 hour live show, a 13 track CD (Soon WE PROMISE!!), became a 5 pc. Band. Had at least 4 positive write ups in local press. 3 radio interviews. Filmed a music video. Have performed approximately 30 live shows for various Tacoma area(and Olympia, Kent and Port Orchard) venues, all without actively booking our band. Played open-mics usually at least once a week. We also recieve regular rotation on a handful of radio webcasts. Have had most of our songs on SoundClick.com reach number 1 or at least the top 10. We have 20+ original songs and continue to write and be inspired regularly. It has not always been easy....but it has definately been worth it. Thank you Gene...for everything,

and Thank you Markal !!!

And WELCOME to Randy on bass, and Tyler on drums. ****VoxxyRaisesGlassToHerBandmates****

For those about to rock

Tacoma is a rockin' place.
by Natasha Gorbachev
Apr 03, 2008

History has shown us what an incredible force music can be, and I'm here to assert that this powerful form of art is alive and transforming our own humble Tacoma in ways that you might not be putting together.

That's why Tacoma's music scene is this week's Scene of the Crime.

This Dirty South is home to extremely talented musicians of every sort. When our dearly beloveds like Neko Case and Vicci Martinez rise to the realm of stardom (we're all so proud), they perform in front of thousands of people and talk to national news and entertainment publications. Where do they tell all of them that they're from? TACOMA. Damn straight. That's viral marketing at its finest.

How could you not love on our local music stores including Buzzards, Hi-Voltage, Golden Oldies, House of Records and Rocket Records? They don't just provide me with a hangout where I can meet my friends while buying CDs that I've lost or need, they're also adding commerce to streets that were once forgotten.

More than anything, I'm just downright passionate about supporting Tacoma's local music scene and the bands within it for the beautiful and/or loud noise that they make, their sounds that make my heart pump with the beat, how they give me something to do every night of the week and that their dedication to their art is making Tacoma a rockin' place to be.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the SWEET music festivals that happen in Tacoma, like Wintergrass, Louiefest, Tacoma Jazz and Blues Fest, Old Town Blues Festival, Old Town Wine and Jazz Fest, the new Gray Skies Blues Festival, and the events that have stellar music lineups like Urban Art Festival, Hotrod-A-rama, Art on the Ave, Freedom Fair, Ethnic Fest, and the Glass Roots Festival.

I'm going to conclude this week's column with a listing (certainly not meant to be all-inclusive) of some of my personal favorites that you should pay attention to. If any of the words below are foreign to you, I encourage you to simply check these bands out via their MySpace page (they've all got them with their songs loaded up) and attend any one of their upcoming shows.

The Elephants. Dichroi. Matt Coughlin. Top Heavy Crush. Fear Train Caravan. The Early Sunsets. Foray. The Joshua Cain Band. The Dirty Knockers. The Fucking Eagles. Trip the Light Fantastic. Blonco Bronco. Exit to Main. Spiro. resDues. TMKA Obtuse. Evan Purcell. Clemm Rishad. Phil O'Sulllivan. Battersea. Sons of Ivan. Voxxy Vallejo. Kareem Kandi. Mono in VCF. The Drug Purse. Paris Spleen. Girl Trouble.

Supporting the local music scene is one of the easiest ways for you to help change the face of Tacoma, and the lives of these musicians who are so very worthy.

Message to Venues
Current mood: argumentative
Category: Music

Thoughts on gigging:

I have read many posts that sort of reprimand bands about wanting to get paid to play and how the responsibilty to draw an audience is placed solely apon the band, and so I'd like to say that to a certain degree this is accurate because if you really believe in what you are putting out there then you should be doing all you can for it……however this IS a WORKING RELATIONSHIP between the band and bar owner. The idea here is that everyone get what they want right? Well let me first say that it should also be some of the bars responsibilty to have an established music listening clientele. And it seems to me that the only way to achieve this is to be consistent in the quality of music you provide your customers. NO ONE wants to hear even their favorite music through a mediocre sound system/set up/sound man, and especially don't want to hear a band that just down right sucks. A venue can be picky in the quality of live music they book for their club. When customers know that they won't have to endure an all night show of noise, then everyone is happy.  There are plenty of worthy local artists out there, IF they have a reason to come play your venue. You can't expect everything that you seem to from these musicians. First of all we spend several days a week in rehearsal to prepare for a gig. Most of us are broke because of the sacrifices we make for our art, and yet we still have the equipment we need, and make flyers and various promotion at our cost. Now you want us to fill your business with patrons, and if we don't receive any compensation then we have paid to promote your venue. Some will say well if you had a following…???? Well you know what? If every one of our fans showed up to every one of our shows then we'd always fill your club, but that's very unrealistic when we wind up playing every week just to try and get some of the exposure we would need in order to do this for you every time. Not to mention WE want to make new fans as well….this is what I need most from YOU, the venue owner…..NEW FANS!!!! MORE FANS!!!! And what are you gonna do to make your place the stage that my already established fans would rather see my band play at?? What is the venue really sacrificing? You have no risk……you are certainly not gonna lose customers by only providing top notch live music. And I'm not even saying that we (my band) is in this category…but I WOULD invite you to decide that for yourself. So my advice to venues is to do YOUR part as well. WE can help EACH OTHER and in the process foster an amazing local music scene. And this isn't a bitch about not getting paid as much as not getting the pat on the back that most of us deserve for working our asses off in a labor of love that only other artists can seem to appreciate. Everybody has to bring it up a notch...and venue owners, booking agents, and promoters...you are on the frontlines of helping your local and rising artist community get the exposure they deserve and need in order to make that Rolling Stones interview where they happen to mention how much they LOVE playing at your establishment....uh...or something like that. LOL

C'MON everyone...let's do this right. We all have to be fair in our expectations of each other...this is, afterall, supposed to be a business... for all involved.

Tacoma Weekly Band Review

Drawn together by destiny

By John Larson

Tacoma Weekly
jlarson@tacomaweekly.com
Published on: April 03, 2008

Tacoma is the City of Destiny, a fitting base of operations for the members of Voxxy Vallejo, three people who clearly were meant to play music together.

The group consists of Voxxy on vocals, Gene Vallejo on guitar and vocals and Markal Harris on percussion. Their music could be described as a mix of blues, rock and pop. However one might try to classify it, they certainly have a sound and look that makes them stand out in the crowded local scene.

Last year Voxxy was living in Iowa when she and Vallejo connected through the website www.soundclick.com. They were posting material on the site and began communicating via e-mail.

Voxxy had already planned to move to Phoenix. They collaborated on a number that became "Bad Woman Blues." Intrigued by this singer he had never met, Vallejo kept in contact. Shortly after she arrived in Arizona, he invited her to move up here to start a group, an offer she took him up on.

Vallejo and his wife let Voxxy live in their home until she found her own place.

Voxxy’s grandfather was a Pentecostal minister and she grew up around the music of the church. Her relatives got her into singing and she wrote poetry growing up. She was 19 when Alanis Morrissette hit it big. That inspired Voxxy to learn enough keyboard and guitar to begin writing songs.

Voxxy is someone who was meant to perform in front of people. Between her captivating vocal style, great stage presence and hip and unique sense of fashion, she is perfectly suited for the role. But she recalled her first time on stage was hitting a bar with a roommate on a karaoke night. She reluctantly went up after her friends talked her into it, and remembers being quite nervous.

From karaoke she moved on to fronting some hard rock bands.

Vallejo is originally from Mississippi. His father, who was a musician, died when Vallejo was 13. To cope with his grief, he got some instruction books and began playing his father’s guitars.

A few years later his mother moved the family up here, and Vallejo enrolled at Lakes High School in Lakewood. The longhaired kid with the southern accent and cowboy boots felt like an outsider among his new Northwest classmates. It was the late 1970s and southern rock was at the peak of its popularity. "I cut my teeth on Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top," Vallejo remarked. His southern roots and guitar skills came in handy as he dived into the local music scene.

He made friends with another outsider, Harris, a classmate who moved here from the Bay Area.

"Music brought us together," Harris recalled. They jammed together at some parties, but lost touch with each other. Harris played in jazz outfits while Vallejo played in rock groups until the late 1980s, when he got out of the band scene.

A year or so ago Vallejo began having a reoccurring dream. He was onstage in a big dome with a longhaired female vocalist and a male drummer. Teaming up with Voxxy last year made the first part come true. They were playing local clubs as a duo for a while.

Reconnecting with Harris, who Vallejo had not seen or talked to in more than 20 years, was easy. A few months ago Harris was searching for happiness and fondly recalled the good times he had playing music with Vallejo long ago. He called information and got the phone number for Vallejo’s mother, which is how he was able to contact his old friend from high school.

He was asked to audition and recently joined the group. He seems to have found the happiness he sought. "This is like a family to me," Harris said.

Voxxy came up with her stage name when posting material on the Internet. A band she was communicating wanted to know her name, and she came up with it from vox, musician slang for vocals. Paired with Vallejo, the new group in Tacoma had a name.

Voxxy said some people assume, based on the band name and the rapport she and Vallejo exhibit on stage, that they are a married couple.

"We are really like a brother and sister," Vallejo observed.

The group has recorded six songs and is working on an album. Voxxy writes most of the lyrics, with Vallejo writing some and much of the music.

When playing local bars and coffee shops they break out a few cover tunes such as Janis Joplin’s "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Come Together" by the Beatles. They recently shot a music video at Bob’s Java Jive.

Voxxy Vallejo plays Mocha Moo in Lakewood at 8 p.m. April 5.

The Inside Story…The Rooster….Set Me Free and more….
Current mood: frisky

We get a lot of comments about the rooster at the intro to "Set Me Free" and I was thinking of the story behind that whole song and felt like sharing. First off the rooster is an inside joke about the fact that Gene likes to be up at sunrise and works on music often in those early hours before heading to work. Where as myself…..as much as I love a beautiful sunrise…..I get my best sleep in the morning hours and like to sleep in, any chance I get!!! The rooster is because he would be up for hours working on a piece before I would even wake up…and sometimes he was waiting for my feedback or input. Now I was in Arizona and had decided to move out here to Tacoma having never met this man I had been writing songs with for the past few months. It was the last week before the move and I was having doubts, and fear was creeping in which gave me a ton of nervous energy that I felt would be best to channel into a song. I told Gene how I was freaking myself out and getting scared and I needed a piece of music to write to (give me my DRUG!!!) I told him that he was familiar now with my voice and style and taste…..(after now completing a handful of other pieces together) so write something just perfect for me. Later, but shortly later…he sent me a piece titled "Voxxy’s Theme" which is now "Set Me Free". The "demons" are fear and doubt and the rest is my nervous energy…but it’s the music that really set me free, and that’s the light that I will always follow.

~Voxxy

HUSTLER OF CULTURE
You can stand atop the mountain and scream your naked desires to the universe or shed that synapse epilepsy and hug the South Sound today with your fellow man:

MUSIC: Tonight at Bob's Java Jive, Voxxy Vallejo, the two member Janis Joplin meets Jimmy Page blues band slowly gaining a following around the South Sound, will set up show for a show and video shoot. It'll be Voxxy's first video ever, and you and everyone you know is invited to attend. Bobble Tiki thinks tonight's show will be a hell of a lot better than the last time you made it to video, and you won't even need to take your top off this time.

Voxxy Vallejo
Voxxy Vallejo are few in numbers, but formidable in power. On stage it's just the two of them — the blues heavy licks of Gene Vallejo spliced with the awe factor of Voxxy's vocals — but that's more than enough. Voxxy Vallejo have the ability to make you forget it's just the two of them, especially on record where the multi-instrumentalism of Vallejo makes their sound complete. Not that it will be incomplete at Bob's Java Jive. There'll be more than enough Voxxy Vallejo to go around.

Deborah Page will open the show tonight at Bob's Java Jive, and after Voxxy Vallejo plays a set and shoots their video, Kurt Lindsay will finish things off. — Matt Driscoll

http://weeklyvolcano.typepad.com/spew/lakewood/index.htmlMUSIC:    If you're into sexed up blues rock, and if you're anything like Bobble Tiki you're into anything prefixed with the phrase "sexed up," then Voxxy Vallejo's show at Oh! Gallagher's in Lakewood should be your cup of tea. A tag team, combining the guitar work of Gene Vallejo and the vocal styling of the artist known only as "Voxxy," Voxxy Vallejo is a band worth familiarizing yourself with. A Thursday night in Lakewood seems like the perfect opportunity to do just that.

I'm psychic. Cool, huh? Channeling my psychic powers, I predict that the South Sound will be sick with new music in 2008. I predict new albums on vinyl will make a comeback. I predict that mp3 players will sing Tacoma's songs. And I predict nightclubs will burst at the seams with new faces and local pride.

My crystal ball tells me Tacoma's newest bands have acquired the skills and assistance needed to digitally express a slew of perfect pop songs. In its murky kaleidoscope face I see Mono In VCF releasing a new record titled Wallpaper. The Drug Purse will make a split seven-inch with The Freakouts as well as record a full-length by the end of 2008. I see The Elephants and Waves and Radiation releasing new records; The Elephants in February. Also in February I see Paris Spleen releasing The Gesture. I see Tree Roots in the Basement releasing Say When. In March, Wide Eye Panic will release its sophomore effort, The Process. Basic Radio will release its debut CD, No Static. I see Mama Loves Daddy releasing In the Valley of Desire. Scott Andrew will release his latest effort, Save You From Yourself, just in time for spring break.

My tea leaves say that the sultry, Janis Joplin-reminiscent newcomer Voxxy Vallejo will release a full-length in April or May. After more than two years of anticipation, The Painkillers release Every Rainy Day. Tacoma's beloved Girl Trouble will release an album that they struggle to name. Possibly naming it after something close to their hearts. The tiny vocal powerhouse Kari Ehli will give us What Love Is, a country/rock album before summer. Ghosts and Liars will release new music — even if only online — and its individual members will tackle solo projects before year's end. I predict new releases from Jet Black Stare and Atomic Outlaws, too.

And that is just scratching the surface.

I tossed my magic bones to discover that Deborah Page's new CD, For, will be more popular than pancakes. Scream Club's 12-inch, 10-band international compilation, ACTION! DISCO!, will inspire thousands of awkward teenagers to boogie down. My bones claim mysterious Tacomans will sneak music into a 100th Monkey tile.

My spirit guide says South Sound bands are a diverse group. The Drug Purse will enter the film world with "We Were Snails." Girl Trouble will release a full-length, independent, Tacoma-made flick titled "Quiet Shoes." Scream Club will release their music videos on DVD. Voxxy Vallejo will hang original artwork at local galleries, as well as release videos for her songs "Rock On" and "Leave Em Cryin'."

In light of the Hollywood writers' strike and awful reality shows, my tarot cards predict folks will embrace local entertainment in larger numbers. My favorite local bands will refine their niches, build up their fan bases and work their mojo like Tiffany "I Love New York" Pollard.

A flock to nightclubs, restaurants, taverns and bars couldn't happen at a better time. After inhaling really strange glowing smoke in my teepee, a vision of live music club owners dropping big dollars for government-mandated sprinkler systems circled my head. Large clubs were originally told that they had until this month to comply with this "Great White" fire code, but the deadline has been extended to Dec. 1, 2009. My female intuition says some clubs will tighten their belts, raise their prices and lower their spending in order to pay for this mandatory improvement. Let's support the clubs' efforts. As your horoscope states, "Appreciate what you have before it's gone."
