Sigur Ros

Sigur Ros...Ca fait un bout de temps que je connais et je n'en avais jamais parlé!!! Ouch!

Comment parler d'eux : groupe islandais mondialement connu!

Hi Allison!
How are you today?
I am doing very well, thank you.

Can you tell us how did you fall in music?
There is a picture of a little three year old me sitting naked on the piano bench and singing, so I think I started young. I begged for piano lessons at six, and my parents were very supportive. It wasn't until I started writing about five years ago that I felt everthing fit in its place: I love singing music that other people wrote, but expresssing your own cathartic experiences in hopes that you'll give others resolution feels really meaningful.

Some of your songs are on your Myspace site : do you expect to make an album? Have you some contacts with a label?
Well, I have two albums currently, one was an EP created at home when I was first starting out, and the other is a full-length called "Vox' that I've been selling at shows and through iTunes and CDBaby. 'Vox' has been getting the word out there, but there is another album in the works. Right now I don't have contact with a label, and honestly, I want to have more to bring to a label situation before I go that route: I have more building to do on my own.

Terra tell us that you have "one of the loveliest voices" she has ever heard. What can you answer after that?
Terra!!! She always makes me feel so grounded and strong. She heard my voice a few years back (3 years already!) on this guy's recording, and I saw her on his website links and I wrote to her and we became friends. It was a mutual admiration, and it's funny: we're these two short little women and our voices are so large...I think that's a lovely compliment she gave. I sing with a huge amount of love: that's the most important thing.

What is the better way to create a song (your personal environment, to be in public, etc…) ?
I actually write the most important ones in the car, so I carry a note pad and am fully prepared to pull over. My boyfriend and I just bought a condo here is LA, and the peace it affords me to be in this beautiful place and have quite days in which to write really is affecting the songwriting...I think the most important thing in writing a song is proper inspiration...if you catch the thoughts at the moments they're most vivid, the song is quite a portrait of them.

What do you think when I talk about France and French people? Did you ever go in this country?
I love France, I love the French language. J'etudie pour cinq ans le francais!! Now all I can remember are conversational phrases and the wonderful way it felt to be relatively fluent. I went to Paris in college on a choir tour. While the other kids were going to museums and doing all the tourist things I was enjoying beer and cigarettes in a cafe, going shopping for shoes, getting my hair cut: I wanted to live like I was a resident having a day off. I loved the people, I loved the buildings. I intend to return.

Do you remember an album listening when you were child?
Peter and the wolf...Bob Dylan, Moondog, Hugh Masekela...my father's eclectic mix of records was my happiness...Scheherezade was by far my favorite. When I was old enough to listen to the radio I fell madly in love with commercial pop music: Madonna's 'Borderline', anything on B94 in Pittsburgh. The eighties were so fun musically.

What are you listening to these days?
These days I am listening to Keb' Mo, choir music ( Robert Shaw's Choral singers ), older Elton John, Jack Johnson, Neko Case, Kool and the Gang...what am I NOT listening to might be a shorter list ;) I love everything that feels genuine, except deeply hateful music. I am sure it's genuine too, it just hurts to hear it.

Can you give us your favourite album?
That's so hard...I get teased all the time because whenever I hear some thing I love I say 'Isn't this the most beautiful song ever?" and then I say it ten minutes later...my boyfriend makes me laugh with his gentle imitation of that habit. I would say 'Fox Confessor Brings the Flood' by Neko Case quickly followed by Celine Dion's greatest hits. Say what you will, she is amazing. I also love Weezer's Green Album and Dido's 'Life For Rent'. My taste is not particularly cutting edge :)

In order to improve this blog, can you recommend us an artist (or many) who really needs to be discovered?
Matt Coleman, a wonderful singer-songwriter hailing from Redlands, California. He is amazing and needs to be heard by as many people as possible. He does this style of music called "Hobo Jazz', which is also the name of one of his groups. He is so real.

To finish, what can I wish you?
Wish me luck: there's a lot of work yet to be done :) Thanks so much for thinking enough of me to ask me these wonderful questions.

Many thanks for your answers and see you soon on scene (I hope so in France) ;o)

Thanks so much, Manu!!!!
xoxo,
Allison

Ben Folds
