A report back will follow, covering recent actions against the financial system: the 'financial civil disobedience' model proposed by Catalonian anti-banking activists, organizing against the G20/WEF meeting in the U.S., and foreclosure resistance. The presentation will end with a brief explanation of a proposal to organize bank users and discussion.

Disrupt Lake City! is made up of Midwestern anarchists and anti-authoritarians enraged not only by the current wars on Iraq, Afghanistan, and "Terror," but more deeply by the pathological militarism of nation-states and the occupations they wage - both within their borders and beyond.

Far from the coasts, and the mass movements that encompass them, the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, which is the largest small arms ammunition manufacturing plant in the world, produces roughly 90% of the small arms ammunition utilized by the US Military at any given time.

The US led war in Iraq has been raging for nearly six years - the latest in a series of wars of occupation proceeding for centuries. The current US anti-war movement has grinded nearly to a halt due to sectarianism, ineffective vigils and "speak truth to power" campaigns. It is clear to us that those in power have a concrete understanding of their influential roles in the global military industrial complex.

As people opposed to war, occupation, and state sponsored terrorism, we understand the role that logistical support operations play in perpetuating the US war effort - at home and abroad. Soldiers, supplies, transportation, communication, weaponry and ammunition are some of the many components needed to maintain wars and occupations. While counter-recruitment campaigns, port resistance actions, and physical attacks on military infrastructure have all targeted some of these logistical frameworks, the ammunition supply line has been fairly ignored.

On March 21st, 2009 the 6th anniversary of the war, Disrupt Lake City! is calling for a coordinated day of direct action against the plant. On this day anarchists and anti-authoritarians from the Midwest and beyond will gather to take a physical stand against the supply line dominating their lives and the lives of those across the globe. And, you can join them! This presentation outlines what you can do!

Nov 20th: Stencil Nation: Graffiti, Community, and Art

Stencil
Nation: Graffiti, Community, and Art
An Author Event with Russell Howze
Thursday November 20th 7:00PM

@

Wooden Shoe Books
508 s. 5th St.
Philadelphia, PA
www.woodenshoebooks.com
sabot@woodenshoebooks.com

"Stencil Nation: Graffiti, Community, and Art" packs over 500 full-color photographs in a 192 page, 8 inch by 8 inch pound of paper and ink. The book presents work by more than 350 artists from 28 countries, including Iran, Australia, Japan, Canada, Spain, Lebanon, Israel, and the United States. Featured artists include: Banksy, Jef Aerosol, Logan Hicks, Adam5100, Arofish, M-City, SWOON, Hao, John Fekner, Peat Wollaeger, Klutch, and others.

Without a doubt, stencils are the fastest, easiest, and cheapest method for painting an image on a wall, a sidewalk, or almost any object anywhere. Stencil Nation focuses on the unexpected mix of this lively, accessible medium to reveal engaging aspects of an intentionally secretive international creative community. With dynamically illustrated perspectives from diverse niches of the art form, hundreds of photographs and numerous essays have been curated by StencilArchive.org's founder, Russell Howze. Stencil Nation builds upon previous published works to give the most extensive and up-to-date history of stencil art, as well as how-to tips from the artists who work within the art form.

Stencil Nation Goes on an East Coast Tour: November and December, 2008

After a great West coast tour and a visit to the Melbourne (Australia) Stencil Festival, Russell Howze will be on the road this winter, giving his slide presentation for "Stencil Nation." This one hour presentation will give a great overview of the art form, using examples from the book as well as other outside sources, materials, and interesting items. Russell will also have actual cut stencils and will allow time for questions about all things stencil.

About the author, curator

Russell Howze saw his first stencil in 1990, which was J. R. "Bob" Dobbs on an apartment wall in Clemson, SC. In 1995, Russell saw an amazing sight on the exterior wall of the Reichstag in Berlin: a huge stenciled Bertolt Brecht poem. He snapped a photo of that stencil, then found one in Budapest, Hungary. Then a few more stencils appeared in Basel, Switzerland. When he landed in San Francisco in 1997, he found dozens on the sidewalks of the Mission and Haight neighborhoods. He's never stopped photographing the sometimes temporary, always intriguing art form.

In 2002, Russell created the first version of Stencil Archive, thinking that he would have time to scan and upload his own collection before anyone discovered the site and submitted their own work. He was gladly mistaken, so Stencil Archive (www.stencilarchive.org) took off, outgrew its parent site HappyFeetTravels.org, and ended up becoming a site with over 10,000 uploaded photographs. At the time of its inception, Stencil Archive was the only international stencil site out there (for a few months). Now there are dozens of sites with tens of thousands of photographs. Russell continues to curate his site, posting stencils from around the world and featuring dozens of amazing artists.

In June 2008, Russell launched "Stencil Nation" with a successful stencil art exhibit, his third curated show, in San Francisco, and then went on a six-city book tour up the West Coast. He will also took his one-hour slide presentation to Melbourne, Australia for the 5th annual Stencil Festival in early August. He will tour the East Coast in November and December, bringing stencil goodness to the holiday masses.

When not photographing, making, painting, and uploading stencils, Russell fills his time by doing one or more of the following fun things: being a carny for the Sustainable Living Roadshow, riding his bike, writing for his blog www.HappyFeetTravels.org, cooking healthy food, creating vector art and putting it on stickers and buttons, producing events, puppeteering, listening to good music, traveling, and volunteering/protesting to make the world a better place.

He currently lives in San Francisco's Mission District, and is usually seen on his bike with his camera slung around his shoulder.

Teaching Rebellion: Stories from the Grassroots Mobilization in Oaxaca

A Compilation of Testimonials, Edited by CASA Chapulin

With Silvia Hernádez and Chris Thomas

@
Wooden Shoe Books
508 s. 5th St.
Philadelphia PA
215-413-0999

sabot@woodenshoebooks.com

The Teaching Rebellion speaking tour aims to foster dialogue among activists from Oaxaca and the US around organizing strategies and movement building utilizing the experiences of the Oaxacan organiziers, who brought together labor, indigenous, women's, youth, and neighborhood organizations to build a powerful movement for democracy and accountability. Speaker Silvia Hernádez will join us from Mexico, accompanied by co-facilitator and translator Chris Thomas, to speak about the book, present art and photography from Oaxaca and promote discussion and reflection on the former and current political climate in Oaxaca and its relevance to everyone organizing in their own communities.

Silvia Hernádez, a sociology student active in the barricades and in defense of Radio Universidad when it was under attack by state police, continues to actively organize for autonomous spaces and alternatives to the state's neoliberal development plans. She was arrested on July 16, 2007 when the Oaxacan social movement sought to occupy the Guelaguetza auditorium to carry out the traditional Guelaguetza festival, and spent nearly a month as a political prisoner. She belongs to VOCAL-Voces Oaxaquenas Construyendo Autonomìa y Libertad (Oaxacan Voices Constructing Autonomy and Liberty) and gives workshops in recycled art and urban agriculture.

Chris Thomas spent two years collaborating with groups working in the autonomous school system being developed in the Zapatista communities in the La Garrucha region where he worked with to develop teaching materials and reinforce the ongoing development of community educators in the region. He coordinated C.A.S.A. de la Paz from 2006-2007, and can generally be found somewhere between New York and Mexico.

"Once You Learn To Speak, You Don't Want To be Quiet Anymore."

In 2006, Oaxaca, Mexico came alive with a broad and diverse movement that captivated the nation and inspired communities organizing for social justice around the world. Fueled by long ignored social contradictions, what began as a teachers' strike demanding more resources for education quickly turned into a massive movement that demanded direct, participatory democracy. Hundreds of thousands of Oaxacans raised their voices against the abuses of the state government. They participated in marches of

up to 800,000 people, planned strategy over the barricades, occupied government buildings, took over radio stations, held sit-ins, and reclaimed spaces for public art and altars for assassinated activists. In the now legendary March of Pots and Pans, two thousand women peacefully took over and operated the state television channel for three weeks. All this despite the fierce repression that the movement faced—with hundreds arbitrarily detained, tortured, forced into hiding, or murdered by government forces and paramilitary death squads. And the Oaxacan people are still determined to make their voices heard.

Accompanied by photography and political art, Teaching Rebellion is a compilation of testimonies from longtime organizers, teachers, students, housewives, religious leaders, union members, schoolchildren, indigenous community activists, artists and journalists—and many others who participated in what became the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca. This is a chance to listen directly to those living and driving one of the most important social uprisings of the 21st century.

" Teaching Rebellion presents an inspiring tapestry of voices from the recent popular uprisings in Oaxaca. The reader is embraced with the cries of anguish and triumph, indignation and overwhelming joy, from the heart of this living rebellion."
Peter Gelderloos, author of How Nonviolence Protects the State

"These remarkable people tell us of the historic teachers' struggle for justice in Oaxaca, Mexico, and of the larger, hemispheric battle of all Indigenous people to end five hundred years of racism and repression."
Jennifer Harbury, author of Truth, Torture and the American Way

" During their marches and protests, whenever the Oaxaca rebels sighted a reporter, they would chant: "Press, if you have any dignity, the people of Oaxaca demand that you tell the truth." Teaching Rebellion answers that demand, with ample dignity, providing excellent context to understand the 2006 uprising and extensive and eloquent interviews with the participants themselves; an amazing read and an important contribution to the literature of contemporary rebellion."
John Gibler, author of Mexico Unconquered: Chronicles of Power and Revolt

With Editor Matt Meyer

Let Freedom Ring presents a two-decade sweep of essays, analyses, histories, interviews, resolutions, People's Tribunal verdicts, and poems by and about the scores of U.S. political prisoners and the campaigns to safeguard their rights and secure their freedom. In addition to an extensive section on the campaign to free death-row journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, represented here are the radical movements that have most challenged the U.S. empire from within: Black Panthers and other Black liberation fighters, Puerto Rican independentistas, Indigenous sovereignty activists, white anti-imperialists, environmental and animal rights militants, Arab and Muslim activists, Iraq war resisters, and others. Contributors in and out of prison detail the repressive methods--from long-term isolation to sensory deprivation to politically inspired parole denial--used to attack these freedom fighters, some still caged after 30+ years. This invaluable resource guide offers inspiring stories of the creative, and sometimes winning, strategies to bring them home.

Contributors include:  Mumia Abu-Jamal, Dan Berger, Dhoruba Bin-Wahad, Bob Lederer, Terry Bisson, Laura Whitehorn, Safiya Bukhari, The San Francisco 8, Angela Davis, Bo Brown, Bill Dunne, Jalil Muntaqim, Susie Day, Luis Nieves Falcón, Ninotchka Rosca, Meg Starr, Assata Shakur, Jill Soffiyah Elijah, Jan Susler, Chrystos, Jose Lopez, Leonard Peltier, Marilyn Buck, Oscar López Rivera, Sundiata Acoli, Ramona Africa, Linda Thurston, Desmond Tutu, Mairead Corrigan Maguire and many more.

Kevin Funk and Steve Fake, authors of the new book Scramble for Africa: Darfur
Intervention and the USA, analyze the current humanitarian crisis in Darfur and
the activist movements surrounding it, thereby taking on both the US government
and the Save Darfur coalition alike.  The authors present the basic information
on the political and military aspects of the conflict, examine the options, and
suggest ways forward, always with a concern for the broader international
implications and for the hundreds of thousands of victims.

John Ghazvinian, author of "Untapped: The Scramble for Africa's Oil", calls their
book: "Explosive, masterful, and impeccably fair.  Consider it the thinking
person's guide to Darfur."

The authors have been researching and writing about Darfur since early 2006.
Their writings have been published in such media as Foreign Policy in Focus,
Sudan Tribune, Common Dreams, CounterPunch, ZNet, and Black Commentator.
