Swallowed
Category: Writing and Poetry

I did not write this - this was printed in Oregon State University’s literary publication, The Prisim, in Winter of 2004.  It’s always stayed with me - I think it’s haunting.

Swallowed by Amity Hoffman

You can become your own fear

His motions were like a rattlesnake.

He slithered around me,

up next to me, and I could feel his cool

scales begin to surround me.

The touch of the skin was smooth.

I felt secure.  This snake I trust.

I met his marble eyes,

his mouth opened wide revealing two

needlelike tusks.

I was swallowed whole.

Inside I swirled about;

spun by the power of his venom.

And I fell,

exhausted by dizziness.

It was summer inside the snake’s stomach.

I was hot.

I was angry.

I began to grow.

The snake began to grow.

The snake began to swell.  Its skin began to stretch

until all of the scales were entirely shed.

Fresh scales surfaced

and I became the snake.

Eclipse Prom Summary

Ok....

this will not be as detailed as my Nashville summary but I may edit this more later and fill in some details.  Please see my photos section for some pics :)

I arrived in Arizona on Thursday and after finally getting my rental car (which I loved by the way - I want a Nissan Altima - it didn't have a key!! You just press a button and it starts!  It was so freaking cool!!!  But I digress...), I met up with Kady, Tina, Bree and Libby at the Summerfield Suites where we were staying.  We further Americanized Libby (this is an ongoing project started in Nashville) by taking her to Jamba Juice (note: I'm American, but I'd never been to Jamba Juice before so this is not definative characteristic of an American).  We also went to the mall that day so Libby could visit Tiffany's again and she got a darling crescent moon shaped necklace :)

Over then next day, people arrived from all over to cram into our three suites.  I met so many fantastic girls and I absolutely love all of you.  I also got to see people who I had already met and totally love.

Rach hosted a gathering at a park near ASU on Friday where we played games and had pizza.  That night I had dinner with Pelirroja from the Lexicon, Seraphyn and her fiancee Walter (congrats!!!) and the lovely Taylor (AKA Tayls, a co-moderator for my page and one of the coolest chicks I know).

Saturday was the big day and I woke exhaused and nervous.  As part of the prom committee, we went to the ASU campus early (like around 8:30 am) to decorate the gym and set up for prom.  We decorated and got our hair and make up done in shifts and amazingly everything was ready and set up on time.  The prom schedule went like this: Stephenie came out and greeted the crowd and then read Chapter 1 of Eclipse.  After reading Chapter 1, she introduced two "friends" - Edward and Jacob.  This was so awesome - two models were brought in as Edward and Jacob lookalikes so people could get their prom pictures taken with Jacob and Edward.  Both guys were ridiculously hot but Jacob was OHHH so yummy.  (*dies*).  BTW - you won't be seeing my pic up here because I'm a freaking retard who closed her eyes.  But I digress again...

So during this time and pretty much for the remainder of prom, Stephenie signed books, pics were taken with the models and books and limited edition prom t-shirts were sold.  There was also a nice selection of tasty catered food and Stephenie's prom playlist was going which included Eclipse songs :)  But I'm not really sure which were Eclipse songs and which weren't.  I think they were all mixed together.

I hate to say it but second prom was THE prom.  People danced and it was awesome.

After cleaning up the gym after prom, the committee members travelled to the Jacob afterparty for fun and games (and food - I was so dying from lack of food and caffiene that day).  Then back to the hotel to crash and get on a plane the next day.

For those who went, I hope you had fun.  We all worked hard to make this a memorable event and I think we pulled it off.  If you didn't get to go, I'm sorry :(

HUGE thanks to Tina and Kady who thought of prom in the first place.  I'm so glad I've finally met you and I hope we'll see each other again soon.  Thank you to the rest of prom committee - I love you all!

Special thanks to those who headed up the details of the prom: Stephenie, Meghan, Michele and Faith, Little Brown, the Changing Hands staff and the ASU English Department.  I know I'm forgetting names and I'm sorry.  But thank you to everyone who was involved.

Random Facts About Me (thx Kady)

The rules are: Once you've been tagged you have to write a blog with 10 weird or random things, facts, or habits about yourself. At the end, you choose 10 people to be tagged, list their names, and why you chose them to be tagged. Don't forget to leave a comment thats says "You are tagged" on their profile and to read your latest blog. And let the person who tagged you know you completed your mission. Have fun!

1.  I've thrown up after three movies in my life: The Exorcist, Sleepaway Camp 1 and the Night of the Living Dead (the original Romero one)

2.  The X-Files theme song turns me on, for real

3.  Everyone has a superpower, and this is mine: take me to the romance section in a book store, randomly pick a book and hand it to me and I can open to a sex scene.  What can I say, it's a gift.

4.  Well, my friends know this of course but a lot of people here on myspace don't know that I have a degree in animal science but my emphasis is in poultry of all things.  And yes, poultry = chicken :)

5.  Along w/ that degree in animal sci I have a minor in philosophy with an emphasis on non-western religions, because the two totally go together :)

6.  I'm a total hypochondriac (spelling?).  I was convinced that I had lupus for an entire year.

7.  I exaggerate to the point of absurdity.  Some people call this lying, but it's not.

8.  I do lie really really well.  It can be a useful skill as Tami is now learning.

9.  Whenever I'm super depressed, I watch The Last Unicorn.  I guess you could say it's my rainy day movie.

10.  When I was in grade school, I read Pet Semetary 12 times but my mom threw it away because she said it made me depressed.  I just thought it was an awesome book  :P

Ok, I'm tagging these 10 people (and hopefully they haven't been tagged by anyone else):

1.  Tami - because she'll need something to keep her busy at work when she gets back

2.  Ben - because I know he'll do this

3.  Cassy - because she's my awesome music guru

4.  Josh - because I know he'll have some original random facts

5. and 6.  Deb (Foxi) and Kim - because they're my fellow cult members :)

7.  Luke - because I miss him

8.  Jenine - because she loves the X-Files too

9.  Anna - the one person who reads books faster than I do

10. Matt - because I know he'll have the coolest random facts and some of them may involve blowing stuff up :)

My Twilight/New Moon Avatars/Icons
Current mood: moody

I get quite a few questions on how to make avatars.  There is no great secret on how to make an avatar - it is simply an image file (usually jpeg or gif format).  They are usually 100 x 100 pixels.  I use two main programs: Photoshop Elements 4.0 and ACD Photo Editor 3.1 (which is much easier than Photoshop in my opinion, and cheaper)!  For the animated avatars, I use Microsoft GIF Animator (it's a free download).  As the program title implies, you can only use GIF format images in the animation program.  An animated avatar is simply a series of GIF images.

Nashville Summary (Pictures Coming Soon to a Blog Near You)
Current mood: content
Category: Friends

I left Portland early Saturday morning and finally arrived in Nashville at around 10 am.  I immediately called Alphie and Pel and met them for lunch at a restaurant called Wild Noodles by the Cool Springs Galleria.  For those of you who listen to the Fork-Cast from the Lexicon, Alphie and Pel are just exactly like they seem on the podcast – they are absolutely hilarious.  But what you miss on the podcast are the fun gestures and motions they both make J

After lunch, I called Karli (aka Karli in Wonderland) and Torie (aka TorieTenacity) to see where they were (we were all rooming together along with Natally and Rachel [aka Aeternus Sanguis].  Yes, that's right – 5 girls and one bathroom and I think we did VERY well with that).  Karli and Torie happened to be at the Target at the Cool Springs mall so I met them there were we just wandered and talked until they needed to go to the airport to get Rachel and Natally.  At this point, I headed to the area of our hotel and went to the mall (yay!).  Eventually Karli and Co. made it to the hotel where we checked in and got ready for the Lexicon party which was being held in the lobby of our hotel.  For the life of me, I can't quite remember when we met up with Bree (yes, THE Bree) and Libby (aka Freesia) – they may have come to our room before the dinner but what can I say, I'm old and senile.

When we arrived in the lobby, Alphie and Pel had already arrived along with a few other Twilighters.  I finally got to meet Kristen (aka Taxi) and Taylor (aka Tayls) along with her friend Michelle, Brittany (aka Doll Face), Silly Bella, Erica (aka Seraphyn) and Haley (aka Haley Capris).  All in all, about 40 people showed up to the Lexicon dinner.  Alphie had a surprise for us which some of us were already aware of – Stephenie came along with her husband and her publicist Elizabeth.  I've met Stephenie three times now and I've gotten to the point where I don't totally hyperventilate when I see her, but when she got a chair to sit down and brought it over to sit by me… the voice inside my head started screaming "OMG STPEHENIE MEYER IS SITTING BY ME!!"  A total fangirl moment.  I'm not sure the exact order of the following events, but Alphie presented Steph with the scrapbook that many of us from the Lexicon had made pages for as an early birthday present (as a side note: if anyone here was not aware of the scrapbook project as they are not also members of the Lexicon, I'm sorry that I was unable to notify you of the project without Stephenie knowing.  The Lexicon has a special feature where they can email members but exclude certain people if necessary – in this case, the author!).  Alphie and Pel also cooked up three difficult quizzes.  The winner from each quiz won a prize and the three winners were Libby, Taylor and Silly Bella.  Stephenie also read several scenes from Midnight Sun.  The rest of the time during the dinner was spent mingling, talking and eating.  The party broke up around 11ish I believe in which I, having been awake for two days straight, went to bed.

Sunday started quite late for some of us who didn't want to get out of bed (yours truly and Karli).  We met Erica's party for brunch/lunch at the Cheesecake Factory and then walked around the mall for awhile (we're obviously professional shoppers).  The highlight of the shopping that day involved a little trip to a wonderful place called Tiffany's.  Because there were so many of us in our group, we were able to all chip in and get Steph a beautiful apple shaped necklace to show our love and appreciation for all that she has given us, not only her beautiful books but the fact that without Twilight, none of us would have probably ever met .  We came back to the hotel where we hung out in the lobby by the fireplace and talked.  Later that evening, Alphie and Pel met us at the hotel and we recorded a Fork-Cast.  As they had one headphone/microphone set, Alphie had to continually pass the set around as each person spoke but it went surprisingly well.  The a link to the podcast can be found at the Lexicon when the file is converted and uploaded.  As you will no doubt notice and Alphie specifically points it out, I'm a little quiet.  In person, I'm quite shy and I'm not really good at completing vocally with a large group – but I am on there.

Monday, the day of the signing and also a day of birthdays: Libby, Natally, Rachel and Brittany all celebrated a birthday on the day of the signing.  Vielka (from here, the chat and the Lex) also had a birthday but was unable to come to Nashville and Taylor (Tayls) had a birthday on Tuesday.  SOOOO many Twilighters birthdays' – I think it's amazing.  The day started with eating and shopping before we headed over to the bookstore for the I Love Edward Cullen Party and the signing.  The party was unfortunately sold out and not everyone in our party made it in there but several of us, including Alphie, Pel, Brittany, Bree, Libby, Erica, Silly Bella and yours truly were on the list (a huge thank you to the person who got me in).  The party was fairly laid back and for the most part, people just mingled, talked to Steph and got pics taken with her.  There was also a quiz at the party which was considerably easier than Alphie and Pel's (I mean, come on… what color is Edward's Volvo???  Gee, I don't know…). There were a few tough questions like what are the names (first and last) of Jacob's best friends.  I knew first names but not last.

After the party we headed out to the main part of the bookstore where Stephenie did some Q and A and then started signing books.  I believe I heard Elizabeth say that there were about 250 people there total.  There were a few people I had been really hoping to meet who I didn't see anywhere (Sara and Chris… where were you???  Did you not come???  I was VERY disappointed).

After the signing, several of us met in Libby and Bree's room for Pinkfest.  I bet I know what you're thinking – "What on earth is Pinkfest."  Well, Pinkfest originally started as an event in which we could make Bree wear pink.  Libby is a pink fanatic.  Bree doesn't wear pink.  But basically, Pinkfest was a little party in which we talked, Alphie and Pel tortured us, Kristen ate a buttload of pixie sticks and then began to scare us (I have pics – she was shockingly hyper and twitchy and it was awesome) and Stephenie and Elizabeth came!!  The party didn't run too late as many of us had to get up early and leave on Tuesday.  We do have some fun video from the party and I will provide the address for the video when Bree uploads it.  We will also have a photobucket account where all the pics can be viewed.  Later that evening, the hotel group made a short video saying hi to my myspace group with a special shout out to my mods and then a video for the Lexicon chatters.  We were up until 4 am and it was very difficult to say goodbye.

So that's pretty much the wrap up.  I know I've probably forgotten a few things but I'm sitting in Houston right now, quite tired and a little anxious to get home (I hate flying) and my brain is totally fried.

I hope all who love Twilight will have the opportunity to meet Stephenie and their fellow Twilighters sometime in their lives.  I am always amazed by the close ties that Twilighters seem to develop and I really think of all of us as a large extended family rather than merely a fan community.  I am so thankful and happy to be a part of this family.  Oh my god, I think I might break down in tears in the Houston airport.
