thank you / reflection
Current mood: contemplative

Dear Church Council, Endowment, and congregation,

Thank you so much for allowing us to go on this trip. It required a lot of money, time and permission on your part, even though you may not have attended the trip. The 2006 Youth Gathering involved two trips to Texas for myself, both which enabled me to enrich my faith, meet new people, and grow as a Christian.

The first trip was to Austin, Texas for the Orientation for the International Guest Program. This trip allowed me to meet and befriend youth from all around the world. One of the most amazing things on this trip was when we said the Lords Prayer in our first language. When you just listened to it, it sounded like gibberish, but when you realize that everyone is saying the exact same thing it becomes magical. Another eye-opener on this trip was that you do not need to know the same language to communicate, just being there for the same reason was enough to enable communication. We were all brothers and sisters in Christ. It was so great to build relationships with people from so many different countries. Many of whom I still keep in touch with through e-mail and instant messaging.

When I came home from this trip Valentina stayed with my family for about week, which was great. It was so much fun having someone staying in my house and learning about the differences in the culture, and showing them ours. Although Erick did not stay with us, he was great as well. So I would like to thank you for allowing us to sponsor two great international guests to attend the youth gathering with us.

The actual gathering was so amazing it is almost impossible to put it into words. Just walking around San Antonio and seeing 25,000 other youth all there for the same reason was one of the most amazing feelings ever. The interaction center was very fun and educational. There was so much there to do, you couldnt possibly do it all. This is where they also held the learning experiences sessions. My favorite session that I attended was the Terrible Great Game. This session opened your eyes to how it would feel to live in a city under siege, go to a concentration camp, or become a sniper. It was frightening even though you knew it was a session.

I really enjoyed the morning sessions in the Alamodome. These were Bible studies led by Stephen Bond. The way that he presented his information was new and made you look at the Bible from a different perspective. Like when he said that Thomas was not necessarily a "doubting Thomas," but the only who wasnt afraid to come out and ask what everyone was thinking. These were a great way to begin the day.

The mass gatherings in the Alamodome were simply astonishing. The unity and involvement of the youth was a miracle. Everyone just got along and was willing to put their arm around the person next to them and sway back and forth, or hold their hand. Common songs were sung that everyone knew the words to and everyone would be in sync. One of the images that I will never forget from the trip was from inside the Alamodome. This image is of everyone holding up their cell phones and swaying them back and forth. It was beautiful. Another thing I will never forget is the gigantic congo lines that occurred on the floor.

The speakers and performers in both the morning and evening sessions were stupendous. The speakers really made you look at your faith and examine how it is important to you, and how you can help the world, even in the smallest ways. The performers were very good and enjoyed by everyone. Several of my favorite groups played, so I loved several of the performances.

Everyday had a theme, which were enforced throughout the day. The themes were wake up, look around, turn around, cross over, and go with God. These themes made you think and appreciate everything around you. The day was finished with the Final 15 where you discussed the theme in small groups and discussed your day. These were really enjoyable because they allowed you to reflect with everything that had happened that day.

There were also several campaigns going on while we were there. One such campaign was the Hamiltons for Hunger, for which they collected 20 dollar bills to help stop hunger. However, my favorite campaign was the 4:24 campaign which encouraged everyone to pray for one minute at 4:24 everyday, based off of Act 4:24. While we were in the interaction center everything would shut down at 4:24 for a minute of prayer and the silence that followed the announcement was one you would never expect to hear from 25,000 youth, all of whom were praying.

I also enjoyed the activities that we did as a group away from the gathering. These included the Tower of America, which looked out over all of San Antonio and was followed by a 3-D movie on Texas, the dinner boat, and a visit to the Alamo. The first night we were there we went on the dinner boat. We ate dinner on the boat will getting a tour of San Antonio over the river. The Tower of America was visited on our last night in San Antonio. We watched the sun set while in the tower, which was one of the most beautiful things, Ive ever seen. The last day we visited the Alamo which was very nice and educational. I love to visit places of historical importance.

This trip has really enriched my faith because you got to see all the little ways that God works in your life. It has enabled me to grow closer with the kids in our group that went, when I really wasnt close with them in the beginning, being from a different town than a majority of the youth in our congregation. I also enjoyed meeting and exchanging little trinkets with youth across the country. The 2006 Youth Gathering will be an experience I will never forget. I am so thankful I was able to experience this trip and also deeply sadden that it is the only one I will be able to go on. So once again thank you for allowing us to go and supporting us so much.

Sincerely,

Sarah Kleinle

(fyi: this is not edited, i am an awful writer, there was supposed to be a thank you and a reflection, but i thought they were the same thing, and the pictures i wanted to post refuse to show up, even though they've showed up before.)

if it didn't need a subject, this wouldn't have one

i wish i could write, because if i could, i'd reflect more on my trip to Austin. however, my inability to actually make something worth reading as prohibited me from doing so. it saddens me. if i could reflect in words that could make you understand the significance. i'd let you know that even if you can't understand a word someone is saying, if you know you're there for the same reason...communication is possible. if you could listen to the Lord's prayer being said in multiple languages you may say it sounds like a bunch of gibberish, but when you hear everyone stop at the same time and realize everyone was saying the same EXACT thing, you recognize it as quite possibly the most beautiful sound you may ever hear. the final night, when we lit candles and said a prayer around a cross we all helped to make, made you cry. seriously. if i could pick one moment to experience again, that would be it. the culture share really made you appreciate all the differences around the world and it was amazing.

i'm really looking forward to the trip to San Antonio to see the cross again, and run into all the family i met.
